lets hope they draw like that at kokomo 3 weeks from now/ or is 1/4 mile too much for their poor little motors?

ernart3 3/23/14 8:50 AM

Why wait three weeks when Montpelier opens in two.

Re: Power I in Tulsa

The first half of the race was real good with Bell running the top and Bacon on the bottom. They ran side by side for many laps, till Bell pulled down low in front of Bacon. A few laps later Bacon and a lapped car tangled, and that was the end of his night. Bell ran unchallenged the rest of the way.

Tyler Thomas got into 2nd late over Justin Peck, who was doing huge wheelies off turn 4 much of the night. A few laps earlier Thomas, and then 3rd running Austin Brown came together with Brown losing out on the contact. Brown had worked his way to 3rd from 14th at that time.

We all waited out a very long rain delay to resume racing. It restarted at around 11,and I walked out at 1:23 am after the midget feauture. I'm glad they tried to run last night though was cold and windy. I think most people stayed, although I noted there were some missing. Its a long way to drive for a rainout otherwise.

For some reason Sprint doesnt make it to the NE side of Tulsa very well. I had sporadic coverage all night.

I trust we'll be blessed by your presence at Kokomo despite what the weather is??? Usually I find the ones that complain about the lack of midget racing in Indiana are also the ones that never go when there are midget races to go to............

Bell Takes Victory at Night One of the Turnpike Challenge

Tulsa, OK - Chris Bell out- dueled Brady Bacon in lap traffic and cruised to his first POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series win of 2014. Bell battled Bacon from the drop of the green flag Friday night at the 1/8th mile Port City Raceway. The first of the two nights of the Turnpike Challenge saw a three hour delay shortly after heat races began with race teams and track officials battling rain, sleet, and colder than expected temperatures.

Pole-sitter Darren Hagen took the lead on the initial start, but was unable to hold off challenges from Justin Peck and the relentless Bacon. Bacon was then challenged by Bell, who took the lead running the high line on the semi-banked Port City Raceway until a caution came out for contact between Matt Sherrell and JD Black. Shortly after racing resumed, a fierce battle between Bacon and Bell ensued when they entered heavy lap traffic. Setting up the classic short track duel, Bacon ran the bottom line while Bell ran the high side. Utilizing the "treacherous curb," Bell was "able to pass a few guys and then drop down to the bottom and pass some running the top" while navigating lap traffic.

Bell, who had been running mostly the high line in his Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports' Bullet-Toyota, darted to the bottom as he navigated lap traffic taking the lead from Bacon and never looked back. "They pulled through and gave us an awesome racetrack, and hopefully it made for some pretty good racing. I know it did there for the first couple of laps between Brady and me." Bell had a stellar 2013 season, quickly becoming a star on the national short track stage and has picked where he left off.

Consistently running in the top three for the duration of the main event, Peck drove his Esslinger-powered DRC to his first podium finish with the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets. "We had a good, fast night," explained Peck, a graduate of the POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series. "It's running really nice so far, first night out on it. I can't wait to see what the season brings." Peck switched from a Bullet Chassis to a DRC over the off-season, keeping the same Esslinger power under the hood.

Starting from the 11th position, Tyler Thomas charged through the field in his BT Machines sponsored, Esslinger powered, Triple X Chassis to take home the runner-up position. Thomas, another graduate of the POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series is familiar with Port City Raceway from his micro days. "I started my whole dirt career at this racetrack," explained Thomas. "I think that played a huge role in our results."

The only red of the main event occurred on lap 35 when Port City favorite Chris Andrews was collected and turned over. While the late red created ideal conditions for a dash to the finish, Bell didn't let anyone capitalize on the opportunity as he steadily pulled away from the field and took the checkers.

POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series feature results (40 laps): 1. Chris Bell, 2. Tyler Thomas, 3. Justin Peck, 4. Brian McClellad, 5. Zach Daum, 6. Cody Brewer, 7. Alex Sewell, 8. Daniel Robinson, 9. Parker Price-Miller, 10. Tanner Thorson, 11. Austin Brown, 12. Darren Hagen, 13. Jonathan Beason, 14. Jacob Patton, 15. Seth Motsinger, 16. Chris Andrews, 17. Jason McDougal, 18. Brady Bacon, 19. Matt Sherrell, 20. Danny Smith, 21. Chett Gehrke, 22. JD Black.

Tomorrow night, Sunday March 23rd, the Lucas Oil POWRi National Midgets will return to Port City Raceway for the final night of the Turnpike Challenge. Pill draw opens at 2 PM with hot laps at 5 PM and racing at 6 PM. Gates open at 3 PM.

Do you see midget racing trending to quarter-mile and under only? Kenny has found success in going to micro tracks. That obviously leads to micro guys being comfortable in midgets and producing huge numbers there. Will these cars ever show up at Angell Park, Granite City or Belleville Kansas?

Re: Power I in Tulsa

49 midgets anywhere is a good car count, but lets be realistic about the numbers. There were no other midget racing going on anywhere. There was no other wingless sprint car racing going on anywhere. It is the start of the year and everyone is anxious to get to the track and everyone has a full tow budget. Oklahoma has a small, but growing midget series that helped with the numbers. It was a small track that makes people with older equipment feel more comfortable running the race.

Do I expect 49 cars when POWRi comes to Kansas City next month? No. Do I expect it to be closer to the 22-25 cars it has been the last several years? yes. Will I still be there to watch them? yes.

i think thats what midget racing should be... short tracks 1/4 mile and less, makes for good racing and quite frankly we have had some midget races on 4/10 and half mile tracks and its probably some of the most boring racing ive seen and driven, its like driving on the interstate pretty much full throttle very little steering wheel movement, almost like asphalt racing. Port city looks like elbows up action packed wheel to wheel racing, awesome for the fans alot of fun for the drivers

Bell Doubles Down, Takes Night Two
of the Turnpike Challenge
Monday, March 24th 2014

Tulsa, OK - Utilizing the same high-side line that fans saw the night before, Chris Bell took the lead from early race leader Chris Andrews and went unchallenged for the remainder of the 40 lap feature to take home his 6th career POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget win. Bell had a standout 2013 season and proved that he will continue to make winning a habit in 2014 with a clean sweep of the Turnpike Challenge, dominating Saturday's POWRi season opener and then repeating on Sunday.

At the drop of the green, pole-sitter Andrews took the early lead and looked comfortable on the bottom. But it would be Bell rim-riding the 1/8th mile Port City Raceway who would overtake Andrews for the lead. With fellow Keith Kunz Motorsports teammate in tow, Bell and Tanner Thorson began their terror on lap traffic as a fierce battle for third ensued behind them until the caution was brought out for the broken car of Austin Brown.

When green flag racing resumed, Bell switched lines to the bottom in his Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports' Bullet-Toyota and continued to relentlessly pick-off lap traffic until he took the checkers. "We had a really good night," explained Bell. "We had a little bit better luck at the pill draw, drew a little bit further back and were able to get some passing points. We ended up winning our heat race and that put us up front for the feature."

Following his fellow Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports teammate through lap traffic, Thorson claimed his first podium of the 2014 season. "We started third, just held on and followed Bell for a few laps and then got into lap traffic," explained Thorson. "I wanted to get a podium. I can't thank my sponsors enough for all that they do."

Coming from the 11th place starting spot, Brady Bacon would round out the top three for the 40 lap main event. "11th to 3rd is pretty good," explained a slightly deflated Bacon. "I wish we would have started a little more to the front and had a chance to win." Bacon, driving Scott Ronk's Esslinger-powered Spike, worked his way from mid-pack up to third, utilizing the bottom line. Bacon led the opening laps of Saturday night's feature before falling out with a flat left rear tire.

The reigning POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget champion Zach Daum, driving his Toyota-powered Eagle, finished fourth and rounding out the top-five was reigning World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car champion, Daryn Pittman.

POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series feature results (40 laps): 1. Chris Bell, 2. Tanner Thorson, 3. Brady Bacon, 4. Zach Daum, 5. Daryn Pittman, 6. Rico Abreu, 7. Chris Andrews, 8. Matt Sherrell, 9. Colten Cottle, 10. Tyler Thomas, 11. Alex Sewell, 12. Spencer Bayston, 13. Darren Hagen, 14. Jonathan Beason, 15. Ty Hulsey, 16. Cody Wood, 17. Daniel Robinson, 18. Justin Peck, 19. Parker Price-Miller, 20. Jacob Patton, 21. Cody Brewer, 22. Austin Brown.

The micros are ok with me as far as watching them. However, I love port just for the reason of it being an elbows up type of track. If you want a kid to learn how to drive have them race at Port. It is always a knock down battle at that track.
