If anyone from Gas City is lurking? This allowing people to save seats for the season is why so many of us NEVER attend races at your facility.

Ossuks has a good point. Especially for people that want to visit, it is very upsetting to have all the good seats taken, even when you get there before anyone else. Maybe Mel will change this!

Have been driving to Ind. from Ariz. for 17 years for Sprint week and love it.But skip Gas City because of their STUPID seat policy.!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ones putting down seats for the year are the ones in the stands every week. With out them what do you have? Suck it up. Its not always about you. There are plenty of seats.

But what if they don't show up every week or don't use all the seats they reserve? I've seen this practice abused pretty badly by some. I've seen people mark three rows of seats and only used the middle one. Nothing worst then seeing 12 seats marked and only 4 used. BTW I can't speak on Gas City just other places were this practice is permitted.

I feel if you beat me to put your seats down on a Friday before the show then hey you win, you deserve them. But putting them down for the whole year stinks, this is why I only go for sprint week and that's it.

I doubt very seriously that most weekly shows are a sellout. It would seem that the compromise would be to not allow this practice for special events. People who live close enough could surely replace there blankets, etc. In reality I would prefer the complete elimination of this practice, but am willing to compromise. It is especially onerous to those who spend significant amounts of money and time to attend the special events. Finally it truly unfair when people mark off more seats than they are fairly entitled to. The quote "It is not always about you", would seem more applicable to those who abuse this practice, since they are in effect asking for special treatment not afforded to others.

Re: Gas City Seats

This conversation gets started two to three times every year. Just to let you know we have friends that will come watch us race several times a year. They have always been able to find a top row seat on a Friday night. There are plenty of non-marked seats in the top several rows. Yes there are a few people who mark their seats that probably do not show up every week. But after a reasonable amount of time, say when heats have started, if no one has shown up I don’t see any problem with taking the seat. I have absolutely no problem with a track rewarding its dedicated weekly fans by allowing them to sit in the seat they choose week in and week out. Without these fans our sport and local tracks would not exist. Are there not people who hold season’s tickets to other sporting events who don’t show up every week and still have a “reserved” seat?

All you people sit here and ceaselessly complain about Gas City. Just to let you know I have heard people say more than once after their first visit to Gas City that from what they had read online (most likely here, from you) they would have though Gas City was a $h*t hole, and they were surprised with how nice the facility actually was.

Do you complainers realize that by you not going to Gas City simply because you do not like the seating you are making it really hard for the track to stay open? Furthermore, as shown by the example above, there are a lot of people out there who have not attended Gas City purely because of your whining?

I’m willing to bet that if Gas City has to close its doors because attendance is low and they cannot afford to pay their staff, their purse, and other expenses that you same people will be the first ones to complain that another short track has closed only for a shopping mall to be built on top of it.
Instead of complaining and not supporting the track, and complaining and running other paying/potential customers off, why don’t you all start telling everyone what you like about our local tracks, and showing up to sit in the stands. I know if I was a new/potential fan you would not get me out to a facility that I hear such terrible things about.

If you want to see where complaining and not supporting our sport is going to get us just check out the Lost Speedways page on Facebook. Maybe that will make you think twice about what result your actions have on the sport you all claim to love so much.

Not sure which side of this discussion you are coming down on. Perhaps, they could number the seats on the top 3 rows and sell the regular attendees a season ticket for a reserved seat.

I think if you read my post it is pretty clear which side of the argument I am coming down on. :15: As I spell checked and grammatically checked it for clarity. Since I know the whiners and complainers have an issue with that as well.

Why add this added cost to the promoters of having to print special tickets?

If the person does not show up take the seat! It is not that difficult!

Is the system perfect, maybe not, but how many things do you encounter in life that are?

Short Version of my previous post for those who did not feel like taking the time to read it:

1. No problem with tracks rewarding their regular supporters.
2. Believe it or not there are good seats available at Gas City that aren't previously marked.
3. Stop whining and complaining and show up and support your local track before it is gone.

Sure would like to, tough for us to run on Fridays very much. Might make it on a holiday weekend though. Glad Mel is qualifying for sure!

Re: Gas City Seats

There are no good seats at Gas City unless your're in the pits and use that little grandstand or walk around which is what I do. The same person that designed the seats in the "grandstand" never had to sit in them.

rchick 3/22/14 7:29 PM

I have been a member of this site for about a year. I am excited about non wing racing but have never seen it in person. Gas is the closest non wing track to probably 1 1/2 drive. Based on these posts i would hesitate to go, luckily I am used to the negativity and take it with a grain of salt. I plan to see my first no wing races at Gas City this year. I love this site

Re: Gas City Seats

Gas City, or any other track, could paint numbers on the benches, and sell reserved seats for a buck or two more. Could also sell season tickets.

Problem solved.

Re: Gas City Seats

I don't have any problems with the tracks doing what it takes to get fans to attend.

But...my issue with some seat saving is... safety. Some tracks that allow folks to come in early and save seats have the aisles blocked with coolers and blankets and "stuff" and there are only two entrances to the rows at some of these tracks. So you have to climb up the empty seats from the bottom to get the seats in the middle.

Seems the races I attend folks like to save seats and sit up their chairs..etc.. right on the aisle. My wife's pretty acrobatic but she slipped making the climb at a track where the board seats are only 6-8 inches wide, because the aisles were so blocked. This wasn't at the top either, something I think operators should think about.

Probably 95% of the races we attend are no where close to sell outs, and you can literally see from anywhere at a 1/4 mile track so I am not sure what's the hub bub on saving seats.

rchick, Go to Gas City and check it out for sure. Kokomo isn't too far away so you need to see it, too.

What about let'n them pay for the seats for the year, then they can save'm all they want:8: May be give'm a price break for the year:6:

#1jackhewittfan 3/23/14 12:11 AM

Main reason I avoid gas city I'll gladly give my money to other Friday night tracks where I know for sure I can get a seat

Re: Gas City Seats

At this point i could care less about seating..everyone better be glad Mel stepped up to the plate because the track probably wouldnt have opened this year..The city will not let the track get new grand stands they tried several years ago and it was denied..idk how all that works but it is what it is..There are still Plenty of good seats there..maybe not right in front of the tower but down towards turn 1 most of the top section is available each night..In case anyone hasn't seen the website the test n tune was cancelled because of this weather..I really hope races don't start getting cancelled but with the weather the way it is who knows..

PIT CART 3/23/14 7:39 AM

I made it to all but three of the races last year and had no trouble finding a seat. The only time it is packed is for USAC shows . Every race track has somebody saving seats for there friends or putting down blankets early, but for some reason people only complain about Gas City!!!

Re: Gas City Seats

I attend Gas City almost every Friday night, I may save seats at Sprintweek, but beyond that I don't. I have never had trouble finding a seat. It is a quarter mile track. You can see the whole track from every seat.

Re: Gas City Seats

I agree with Pit Cart and Mr. Funk. And from what I have seen at G.C. is, the ones that do the most complaining are the ones that get to the track 2 minutes before the 1st heat pushes off then heads to the top row and expects everyone to get up and move out of the way so they can set down.
Don't forget that the regular Friday niters buy food, drink and beer for themselves and families all year long and not just a couple USAC shows. By the way for the person that complained about coolers, you won't find coolers in the stands at G.C. and Kokomo so come on out to watch the races, both tracks have fantastic racing on weekly shows all year long! I never have a hard time finding a good seat . I just set in one of the extra seats my friends save all year. ..

Re: Gas City Seats

You know, I'm here thinking about how I feel about the saving seats deal. After the racing starts I can't think of a single instance where I let the seat saving spoil my night. If your a seat saver and are not using all the seats you saved, offer the unused seat to your fellow race fan. You might enjoy the company! I met a lot of good people in the stands that made for good conversation when there was break in the racing. We all have the racing in common.

Re: Gas City Seats

We had a problem at GC only once. Arrived on Friday morning, put a blanket down in the top row corner on turn 1 so my Dad could video tape and stand up without blocking anybody's view. Simple right? Dad stands on the end and 2 of us sit next to him. Went in before hot laps and people were sitting on our blanket, asked them to move and they said no. They didn't care if it was our blanket or not. To avoid trouble we removed the blanket and moved down a few rows and they agreed to let my Dad stand in the corner to shoot video. Next time that won't happen, my size prevents me from getting in messes like this but i'm sure my buddy Ted could have handled all 3 of them by himself. Next time i'll jump in, i traveled 5 hours and would rather have my A$$ kicked than to give up my seat.

Charles Nungester 3/23/14 11:29 AM

Re: Gas City Seats

Guess I'll chime in as only a couple races a year visitor.

I really don't have a problem with people showing up early or the night before and laying down seats. It means their going to attempt and probably attend THAT RACE. Gas City you show up and half the top five rows are taped off, a year old plastic sheet etc. Don't matter if you get there at noon or the day before. Theres something there in a location people might want to sit in.

Three or four years ago I witnessed about a thousand people leave even when Jiggs was trying to help people find seats. (The next year they opened the pit grandstands to them) But Im sitting up there looking down at at least four areas with at least 12 seats that are taped off and NOBODY EVER SAT IN THEM. that was just within say 25ft of me. After flagging my arms to Jiggs and pointing them out one of them got filled but the rest of the night the other three stayed empty. Ive come to regular shows where there were plenty of seats but seats taped off were never sat in and nights were taped off seats were only sat in for features.

Right or wrong, good or bad for the track, NOTHING should remain after that show and nothing should be placed till the night before or on race day.

You want season tickets, Buy season tickets. We'll give ya the top three rows. :5::5::5:

Re: Gas City Seats

Sprint week last year I arrived late and sat 2 rows up behind the flagstand. That was my fault for not being more timely. However I still saw a great night of racing but ate a little more mud than usual. I was glad to have a seat as it was standing room only. But on those bleachers I take every opportunity I get to stretch because they kill my back.

This is entertaining. Everyone knows the best seat at gas city is wherever all these crybabies aren't sitting. I'd tell the new promoter to stock up on midol and tampons sounds like he'd make a mint.
