You've got $40 to spend

OK here's the deal. You've got $40 to spend on a night out to the races. The $40 has to include admission, gas and food. So where do you chose to go for your night out at the races? How is that $40 spent?

I'd go to Williams Grove for their Saturday Night Series Program. It's $5 to get in for a three division show of Super Sportsman, 358 LM's and Street Stocks. Gas to get there and back is about $20 as it's about a 170 mile round trip. That will leave me $15 for food and drink, so I should be able to make it home with a few bucks still in my pocket.

I'd have to go to the movies. There's nothing worthwhile close enough for me to get to and home on that $$.

Koonzee 1/22/14 12:36 PM

I would hitchhike to Kokomo.

Kokomo with one of their Pork Chop sandwiches. Even with gas from Indy I'd still have $ left over.

I got three tracks I can hit for that money, Take in drinks and none leftover. Its 90mi round trip to all of em and only one runs Sprints so you can guess LBurg is where im at. I do spend more at the track sometimes a Pretzel or Pizza or both LOL I can fit that into the 40

Every other track I go to is 200-400mi round trip and cost about a hundred to hit with a full tank of gas at 60+ dollars summer prices. eating twice and drinks. Lets just say there will be less of those this year.

Re: You've got $40 to spend

I know we are spoiled here in Indiana, but I could do 15 tracks here for one of their regular shows. A couple of them I would spend it all while others I would have money left over. The admission price would be anywhere from $10-$15 with a sandwich & drink in the $5-$8 range. Fuel would be $12-$15 range for out of town shows. They are:

DIRT-Gas City, Kokomo, Montpelier, Twin Cities, Lawrenceburg, Lincoln Park, Bloomington, Rushville, Paragon and Shelbyville. They all have open wheel racing on the card as well.

PAVEMENT-Anderson, Speedrome, Baer Field, LOR and Mt. Lawn. Some open wheel shows while others would be fendered cars.

Re: You've got $40 to spend

I'm really a stubborn old fart about what races I'd pay to attend (don't care for wings or any tin tops except modifieds). :27: And I rarely go to a race without buying a pit pass. It is tough to live in central Illinois with my particular preferences :15:

So (unless POWRi is running at Lincoln) that really just about leaves me staying home and saving that $40 to spend on gas to get a race some other time. :13:

C ya in Indiana :6: after I have the gas money saved up :3:

Montpelier Motor Speedway or Gas City. 20 minutes from home and only $12 general admission!

But I think I can do Kokomo twice on $40! Gas maybe $3-$5 round trip, I eat before I get to the track (Mcds Mcdoubles Dollar Menu), and take a cooler to stash at Bob and Monica's Camp. Or I can go once with pit pass.

Sit at home and order payper view. $40 wouldn't even cover a fraction of the gas to get some where for a USAC show. I could maybe get a local MTS show in for $40 in Michigan, but even that would be a stretch.

Since that's not enough to get into the Chili bowl I'm going to the Belleville Midget Nationals and eating a corndog

If I could only attend one race I would have to hitchhike to Eldora and watch the world 100.
Or drive and then wait till I find a person drunk enough to pay my way in. This one is more likely to happen. Haha

If you take I-84 you get better gas mileage.:5:

I'm 10 miles south of Haubstadt so Tri-State is it for me. $30 should cover it with $20 or so to get in, eat a couple sandwiches with maybe a popcorn, take my own beer and ride the motorcycle. Sounds good to me! I kind've envy those who are more centrally located in Indiana who have multiple tracks within an hour or so but to have a great track 12 minutes away is also a treat. I-69 really makes Bloomington, Paragon and Indy easier to reach.

Get a buddy to split the gas with me, pack a cooler full, and do the nearly 300 mile road trip to Haubstadt

Lucky SOB... Can I trade you those tracks for the tracks we have in S.E. PA? :17:

With gas at 3.50 a gallon, I can fill my tank up for around 40-45$. Summer time I can drive around 425-450 miles on a tank of gas. The Cobalt usually gets around 36-38mpg in the summer so yup... 20$ for 170 miles is easily obtainable for me.

I'd buy a case of beer put 7 bucks in the gas tank and head to Gas City,Putnamville or Kokomo, who needs food let's have a beer picnic:32:

Go to Butler Speedway. $12 Admission, $8 on the beer and food I am bringing in, and then turn around and do it the next week.

Sitting with my good bud, Lou, both times.

Knoxville Raceway for me, 45 miles so 4 gallons of gas should do it and $15 weekly tickets. That leaves money to get some good BBQ right across from the Hall of Fame with enough money to buy one beer at the track.

I really envy those who have mutliple choices as Knoxville is the only sprint car track close enough to do for $40, even if it is the Sprint Car Capital of the World.

I am with others in that someday I would love to live in Indiana and enjoy non-wing racing all summer long!

You won't even have to trade with me. Just pack up and move to Indiana as there are plenty of places to live that offer you this wonderful opportunity.:D

We would welcome you with open arms Steve. I made that move over 40 years ago and haven't been disappointed yet. Daniel Walker was the Governor of Illinois then.:3: He was one of 4 governors who ended up in prison for various crimes committed during or shortly after their terms in office. That string might not be over with yet.:15:
