Best race you seen in 2013

Whats the best race you seen in 2013?

I seen lots of good racing in 2013 but IMHO one sticks out and it wasn't sprint cars.

1. Merrill Downey Memorial on 9/14 as I watched Barber and Kramer run side by side for well over 25 laps, swapping the lead from time to time but every lap it was who came off the corner best. Barber ran a low to mid track line and Kramer was on the Cush and on the final lap. Joey Kramer took home the $4,444 winners share and a chunk of the lap money

2. 5/4 Burg. A rain just before feature time made the track on the Cushion and after hard work by the crew racing resumed. For 20 laps KT Jr. dominated and a lap 21 yellow bunched the field with two lappers between himself and CJ. Leary. In one of the most determined and fearless drives i've ever seen Leary went in 50ft deeper on every corner. passed the lappers and was on KT in the back straight of the last lap and did a monster Bomb Slider that was big enough to hold on to the flag stand. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.

3. Sprintacular at Eldora, All classes, was just a increadible night of racing with Haud taking the Winged 410 in a photo finish. Bulldog Swindell taking the winged 360 in a clear show of determination and speed and after running four wide for about the first ten laps. Bacon came out on top in the NW 410.

Really only seen one non contested green to checker leader and that was at Atomic but nobody else was racing and it was a good night out anyway.

Enjoyed another great year at many different tracks, Most of the Burg ones with my Pops and thats just PRICELESS!

What were your favorite moments?

hoosier race fan 12/30/13 4:47 PM

UMP Summer Nationals at Vermilion County was probably the best I attended. The modified heat with Nick Allen and Ryan Thomas racing side by side for the win from green to checkered was outstanding. The late model feature was excellent, and probably the best race of the tour. The World Of Outlaws at Kokomo was pretty awesome also.

Best race I saw in 2013 was the Friday nite race at the Sandusky Speedway Hy-Miler......It involved the 2 Supermodifieds of DJ Shullick and Mike Litcky......I watched DJ drive to the outside of the 84 car of Litcky and the 2 ran wheel to wheel ,never giving up as much as a inch for the next 4-5 laps....side by side in the turns ......side by side down the straights.......these were the two fastest cars.....it was a race among a race.....:31::31:.......:22:

Re: Best race you seen in 2013

2013 was another good year for racing with a lot of quality races for all of us to witness. Here are the top five that we saw this year.

1)65th running of the Little 500 @ Anderson Speedway. Jacob Wilson in the family owned ride tops pole sitter Jo Jo Helberg, 9 time winner Eric Gordon (in his last Little 500 ride) and Tony Elliott with all four of them on the lead lap. A real classic race with a lot of quality cars and drivers throughout the field. Wilson drove like a veteran with the 3 big guns breathing down his neck and trying to run him down at the end. A big pay week for Jacob as he won the 60 lap prelude on Wednesday night as well.

2)Illinois Midget Week-Started off at Jacksonville were Kyle Larson topped the 49 car field to gain the victory. The following night Lincoln Speedway had 47 midgets with Michael Pickens showing the way to the stripe. Not to be outdone, 55 midgets filled the pits at Macon Speeday and Andrew Felker came out on top with so many slide jobs I lost count. A PowrI gem that I am already looking forward to again this year.

3)AMA @ Indy Mile-The two wheelers put on their normal quality show during the Indiana State Fair. Howerton Motorsports from Indianapolis provided the Kawasaki that propelled "Flyin" Bryan Smith to the lead and the checkers. A lot of racing throughout the pack with 4,5 & even 6 wide at times for the feature. Crazy to say the least. It was announced later in the year that Howerton Motorsports was closing up shop unfortunately.

4)ISMA Hy-Miler @ Sandusky Speedway-The ground pounding, fire breathing supers of the ISMA came to Sandusky for the annual Hy-Miler. Dave Shullick Jr set fast time and was in the lead on lap 85 when Mother Nature intervined and brought the nights activities to a close 15 laps from the end. The victory was especially sweet for the young Mr. Shullick who drove legendary car builder Jim Bodnar's ride to victory lane decades after his dad Dave Shullick Sr also drove a Bodnar creation to victory in the Hy-Miler. The Friday night show had Mike Lichty & Shullick Jr running side by side, lap after lap as they tried to find the lead. Lichty prevailed in a classic battle.

5)Jack Hewitt Classic @ Waynesfield Speedway-A happy Dallas Hewitt brought his 2m sprinter home in first after a spirited battle with Chad Boespflug and Matt Westfall who brought their rides home in 2nd & 3rd respectively. Jack was all smiles as he presented the trophy in victory lane to the younger Hewitt for a great drive at the racy Waynesfield speed plant.

Looking forward to more of the same in 2014. Happy New Year.:6:

The battle between Kevin Swindell and Kyle Larson at the Chili Bowl was epic! Looking forward to round two in a couple of weeks!

2013 Kokomo Sprint Car Smack Down. Dave Darland put on a great show.

SPD 37 12/30/13 7:50 PM

Gas City KISS, Dave Darland dominated that race, until Brady Short caught him, from 10th, both racing cleanly, as Brady took the win on a track that historically he doesn't do very well at!!!

Re: Best race you seen in 2013

1. Indy 500!!!
2. The 2nd heat race of Indiana Sprint Week at Kokomo. Chad Baesflug started in the 2nd row, drove thru the middle of the front row cars down the backstretch to take the lead. The rest of the heat was passing & repassing! Awesome!

I was going to say the exact same thing.

Honorable mentions:
Thursday night feature at the Dream. If you haven't seen it find a video of it somewhere. The best in late model racing were on kill mode for 25 laps for only $2,500 to win.

The Whiskey City 50 at Lawrenceburg was also a great show. Three wide for the lead for around 20 laps.

Look for more great shows at Sheboygan County Fair Park in 2014 as they are re-doing the track. Looks good so far and if anybody needs accomadations let me know, we have room for travelers.

Re: Best race you seen in 2013

These memories are not in any order.

1.) The Lincoln Illinois Speed (Midget) Week show was excellent, and it was the worst one of the week. Macon was outstanding, but I think that the battle between drivers from 4th or 5th through 9th or 10th positions throughout the race at Jacksonville was possibly the fiercest I have ever seen between that many cars for those positions. Slide jobs, multiple position changes every lap, just insane. Absolutely astounding competition, aided by the fact that Michael Pickens was put out of his heat race on the first lap and had to work his way up through the "B" (which he won) and then started on the back of the Feature (finished 7th). That was fun to watch.

2.) The Saturday night midget feature at the Western World at Canyon Speedway. Even if it hadn't been for the last lap it would have been outstanding. At the white flag, it was clear that Bryan Clauson was too far behind Darren Hagen to have any chance of winning the race and the bonus for winning both the sprint and midget features. The distance he made up between the exit of turn 4 and the finish line for the win was just impossible. This is why we go to races.

3.) The Herb Barlow Memorial MOWA/POWRi races at Jacksonville were memorable, to say the least. POWRi put on a great show, but nothing, nothing (even the above-mentioned Western World midget finish) could top the MOWA finish in 2013. Christopher Bell crossing the finish line with his right side up on Bryan Clauson's left side was one of the wildest finishes I have ever seen, and the margin of victory (I was seated near the start/finish line and had no idea who won) made it all the more memorable.

4. Sprints at Kokomo and midgets at Little Belleville. While no one race stands out for me, there were so many great moments at those two tracks that there doesn't have to be a particular race to which I can point which gets my blood churning at the thought of going there. Just how many sprints wide can you go at Kokomo and how many midgets wide at Little Belleville? I think you measure the width of the tracks, the width of the cars, and add a couple of inches for clearance and you have the answer.

Indy 12/30/13 9:43 PM

How about that 4 wide freedom 100 finish on carb day! Who could not forget that last lap! Also a vote for the Indy 500. It will be tough to repeat those two races in 14.

Yup, That was incredible, Even if I wasn't there in person. it was great to watch streaming

Some of my favorites from 2013, and I must say I thought the overall quality was as high as I can remember. Lots of really good races throughout the year, all over the place, with many different cars/style of tracks...
1. Western World Final Night - Canyon
2. Gas City Midget Week
3. Grandview Eastern Storm
4. Kokomo Midget Week
5. April Lawrenceburg USAC Sprints
6. Ocala Sprint Cars Night 1
7. Kokomo Smackdown weekend
8. Gateway Silver Crown
9. Four Crown Midgets - Eldora
10. Belleville Bash USAC/POWRi Midgets

Both Chili Bowl & Knoxville Nationals were great, but the finale taking rubber is a bummer. Those two just set such a high bar both on track and off.

Have a great 2014 season, everybody...

In no particular order...

Grandview Eastern Storm (There is a highlight video of the feature on gspvideo.com)

Kokomo Midget Week (Kyle Larson & Christopher Bell, enough said)

Haubstadt MSCS show during IMW - Stanbrough and KT Jr dueling it out for the W on the last lap.

Lincoln Speedway (PA) - Brent Marks, Stevie Smith, and Alan Krimes slice and dice for the lead in the second half of the race, with Stevie coming out on top with nearly a three wide finish (That race is on youtube also. Paposse racing does their videos)

Without a doubt it was the Eastern Storm race at Grandview Speedway for the Jesse Hockett Classic. Watching The Modern Day Cowboy knocking down the wall for 40 laps and a battle upfront with Clayton, Clauson and Jones. Levi said it best after the race when he said "if you did not enjoy that, you are not a fan of sprint car racing." :8:

That's my vote. I don't believe I've ever seen a finish of four cars that close at any race I've ever attended in person.

The Leffler memorial race was darn good.

The 10 laps of the Chili Bowl where Swindell and Larson went at it were absolutely electrifying.

Powri/MOWA show at Granite City.

AJ Fike making the pass for the lead on lap 93 and winning back to back Bettenhausens.

I saw several great races this year, but I would have to place the Jason Leffler Memorial near the top. The Indianapolis 500 wasn't too shabby either; most lead changes ever and it was run in front of a good crowd. Also enjoyed some great POWRi midget shows at Belle-Clair and the Gold Crown Nationals at Granite City was very entertaining as well. The last few laps of the DuQuoin Silver Crown race provided some drama, in spite of a low car count. The Brickyard 400 was a snoozer, until Ryan Newman took over near the end. Crowd was lowest ever for the event. I consider the Eldora 4-Crown to have been very entertaining, especially the drive that Dave Darland put on in the sprint feature. The midgets were probably the best show of the evening, though. Overall, it wasn't the greatest year I've experienced, but it probably wasn't the worst either.

Every race that all the drivers and owners loaded up race cars that were not tore up and the driver walked out with a smile on his/her face was the best races I seen in 2013.

We love Josh as you all know he is our youngest, I also care for all the other kids (drivers) that strap in on any race night so when they race and nothing happens that is all Sarah and I need to call it a good night.
