OT a bit...The Morty t-shirt Collection.....
Last weekend at the Gold Crown Morty's son "Dirty Driving" Drew texted me and asked if I would be interested in any of Morty's racing t-shirts. I knew that Morty mostly had white shirts which I do not wear, and also probably 1 size to small as well, but I said I would stop by for a look. I already have a size able t-shirt collection myself, and its not like I need any more! Most of his shirts are size Large.
So I dropped by his dads house, and Debbie and I went to look at his shirts. To make a long story short, before we were done looking for the day,Racing Stacie stopped in,along with Dave and Brenda Darland. After some discussions about t-shirts I told Debbie I would come back over to East Alton Illinois and get whatever racing shirts she wanted to get rid of. She didnt want to give them to Goodwill, she would rather they go to someone that wanted them. I went back over to Morty's house yesterday, and picked up the rest of his shirts. This is what I am going to do with his shirts, and other things he had that might be of interest to others. I am going to donate some things to the Hoosier Auto Racing Fan club which he was a member, for their silent auctions they have. Racing Stacie mentioned the auction they have at the Chili Bowl which goes to an injured drivers benevolent fund. Some things will be going to that as well. I will find some things of interest for fans in Ohio, and send them over to the Hoserville Ohio auction that they have for drivers that get injured. The rest of his shirts I am going to sell, and then donate the money to various racing things. One of the things I have thought of is getting a brick at the National sprint Car Hall of fame in his name. Any other money I get from this will be donated "In memory of Morty" at racing events next year. I thought a good way to start things off,and to let people know about this,I would put up this shirt of Billy Puterbaugh for sale.. He started a near riot late last year with comments about Paul Hazen's 57,and I thought if nothing else, someone would like to buy this and use it for target practice. It is probably a large, but the tag is missing. No extra charge for the autograph!:D Its open for bid till next Monday afternoon when I get out of work. If interested, post a price,or send me a PM if you wish to remain anonymous. Highest bidder will get it,and if you want to throw a couple dollars extra for shipping would be great,or I can deliver in the Indy area,or if out in California,I can bring it to the Oval Nationals with me. http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/...psdbc66bc5.jpg http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/...ps729e0392.jpg |

Re: OT a bit...The Morty t-shirt Collection.....
As I understand it,the said shirt above is from 1996.

Re: OT a bit...The Morty t-shirt Collection.....
You mean what you read off of facebook. Hell I will buy it back just so I can use it to wash my car. Don't worry it will be a long winter and I have a really big pot to stir.

Really I thought I posted this in case someone wanted to get a shirt that perhaps they dont have, and to raise some $$$ to hand out in Mortys name. As a driver, dont you appreciate if someone comes up and hands you some extra cash?? Maybe I should have started with a different driver....I am thinking now. |
Re: OT a bit...The Morty t-shirt Collection.....
It would be the best thing to hand mortys family the money since he is the one that spent the money at the races for all of the shirts he bought. They deserve any money that comes from the shirts. You stoked the fire and you wanted some views and action so if figured I would help

Re: OT a bit...The Morty t-shirt Collection.....
Although Randy would probably get a kick out of this whole conversation, I just wanted to say, I think you took this all wrong Billy. This is a good thing. While looking through his shirts when we came across yours we got a few memories to speak on. Although I don't follow racing like all of you, and really don't know who's who, I can honestly say, we sat around the track and your name came up many times from Randy. You must have been one he liked back in the day. A special thank you to Andrew for helping me with this project. I just would rather someone get use out of all the race items here at the house, than for me to just start pitching them. All I really wanted was a brick to honor him. My Morty loved everything about racing, and respected every driver out there. Including you Mr. Puterbaugh.

Well then I believe all proceeds so go towards getting him a brick to honor his name.
Pm me you address and I will see what I can do to help also |

At least 2 of the shirts I have here,Morty handed em $100 and said keep the change. He was just helping out in his own way. Anything I get over $250.00 will be handed out similar to that. You must have missed the posts recently I've made in gathering money from friends of Morty to hand out at the Meents Memorial at Little Belleville. In the end we handed out $500.00 In Memory of Morty. I didnt have to put my hand up to try and raise a bunch of money, but I did, because Morty was a good friend of ours. Stephanie Meents told me after the race that night that "Your friend Morty must have been quite a guy" Yes he was,and he left an indelible mark not only on my mind, but plenty of others that chipped in as well. I just finally the last 2 weekends handed out the last $310.00 for the Smackdown awards. Thats after the $1200 plus that was handed out at the Smackdown by us fans banding together to hand out some extra cash. I've been carrying that $310 and my camera with me since the Smackdown trying to catch up with the winners. Thats a little over $2000.00 handed out in just a couple months time, thanks to everyone that contributed. My take on all that, and now going to Illinois to get Mortys stuff? Nothing. I dont want anything for doing it. Yesterday for me was a Holiday,a day off work. I spent a good part of that day sorting out Mortys shirts in my basement. After that I drove boxes of old National Speed Sport News over to a friends house,so they would be preserved, and not just thrown out. They might end up in a museum someday, but right now they are in a safe dry place, and I told Debbie that I would come over on Veterans Day weekend to get some more of them, and other things as well. The day before that I was at Mortys house going thru Mortys shirts, and Speed Sport and packing them in my van for the ride back to Indianapolis.Surely I could have done something else on my days off work, but I'm not complaining,as I think I am doing something good for my buddy Morty. If you want to know what Morty's Charities to donate to,I'll get you the names and addresses of them. If you want to donate towards a Brick at the Hall of Fame for Morty, just bid on a t-shirt or 2. I'll be happy do hand deliver it. |
Re: OT a bit...The Morty t-shirt Collection.....
I know Morty handed Josh a 100 dollar bill on a couple occassions and said keep the change. We are going to take all the shirts in our collection and make a quilt out of them.
Good luck Andrew we will help if we can. Jerry #66j stida.com HalfMoon |
Re: OT a bit...The Morty t-shirt Collection.....
Its Monday after work, and the shirt is sold for $20. I had a buyer that chooses to remain anonymous offer me $20 for the shirt,so I will now contact that person back and ask whether they would like the autographed shirt or the non autographed one. Still one more Puterbaugh shirt available!
I went thru the other shirts last weekend to somewhat sort them out. There are a bunch of Dave Darland Shirts,Kenny Schrader shirts,Tony Elliott shirts,a couple Ron Shuman shirts,Casey Shuman shirt,a few Brad Kuhn shirts,Hoosier 100,Hut 100,Jonathan Vennard,a few Jack Hewitt shirts. John Mahoney photo book, the USAC Dick Wallen photos book etc etc. That all off the top of my head,,there's other stuff too.... Make an offer, the worst I can say is no...... |
Re: OT a bit...The Morty t-shirt Collection.....

Re: OT a bit...The Morty t-shirt Collection.....
Here's an update on whats been happening with Morty's t-shirt collection. I've both sold enough of his shirts, and along with a donation or 2 from friends, I was able to purchase a brick in his name at the PRI show from the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum. Debbie received this Certificate in the mail the other day,and posted it on Facebook last night.
I've also sent off some shirts to Hoserville Ohio for their auction next year. The funds from that help drivers injured in the State of Ohio. I have some other things here that I will donate to the Hoosier Auto Racing Fan club. I have some other stuff that will be going out to the Chili Bowl for their Auction for an injured drivers fund. And I still have a bunch of his shirts here to sell, and any money raised will be given back "In memory of Morty" Thanks for the help so far.... http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/...psfd6d2d53.jpg |
Thanks Andrew, just a quick question. If you want to put together a group of Dave Darland shirts we would offer them in our silent auction room and donate the winnings back to the "Morty's Brick" fund for you. DD has already confirmed that he will be attending our Banquet in January to accept his 2013 HARF Driver of the Year Award. Other donations from his collection will be graciously accepted also (photo books, etc.). Thanks again Andrew for thinking of HARF, bob
