Stewart-Haas Racing

ESPN is reporting that on Weds. it will be annouced that Stewart has joined with Haas Racing making Stewart-Haas Racing and Ryan Newman is coming along too.

Stewart is part owner and got paid enough to make him the highest paid driver in Nascar.

Maybe Stewart will get the #70 Haas number, like Dizz Wilson had?

Look for more today.

I think it will come out that Hendrick will own a part as well as Newman.

A lot of people were asking why Ryan Newman was at Eldora with Tony during the Border Wars event there...If this is true above, then now you know.

A few things.

First I hope that with Tony buying into a cup team it does not take money away from his short track operations. He has a lot of money tied up between his USAC teams, WOO teams and tracks.

Second, I wonder if Newman does become his teammate, Newman will want to run any sprint or midget stuff in his spare time. I know he ran a few races including the July 4th show here in Columbus, Ohio.

Finally, HAAS CNC is already a satellite operation of Hendrick's. THey run Hendricks motors and get other assistance. So, Technically the team is already alligned with Hendricks.

But isn't MASCAR requiring teams to cut back to 4 cars?? I'm pretty sure that Roush-Fenway will be cut back...

I feel for all those loyal Home Depot employees.

They have supported Stewart so well. Treated him like a god.... Extreme loyality.

Now, Tony is moving on.....

Bet it is a real blow to those loyal Home Depot employees/fans!

"Show me the $$$$$" --- Tony, you are like all the rest of the high pay sports figures. Your actions, just reduces NASCAR to the low level of NFL, NBA, Baseball....

You make those contractual committemts --- If the employer want to get rid of you,, then you want the $$$, if you want to leave for the $$$ - that is fine with you.

Tony, how many times have I seen you in victory circle talking about the Home Depot Employees -- now, you just sweep them to the gutter...

As they say in NASCAR "Let's go Racin'" === this needs to be changed - "Let's go Racin' for the $$$"

And, to tie the topic to this board--- half owner of NASCAR team (a very bad team) appears to me to be a monster of a job.

Think of all the perils he has ahead of him. Paying the Bills.

Will all the effort for the new business endeavor - effect Eldora and the Sprint car teams? Only time will tell - but, I would not be surprised that he will have to realign his priorities.

I wonder if the timing is bad. Seems like a major focus on Chevrolet. Well, General Motors is in bad shape! Did you know, based on Market Capitalization, that Mattel Toys (6.6 Bill) is worth more than General Motors ( 6.1 Bill)!! Yes, the people that make Matchbox cars is worth more than the "mighty" GM!

With the bad shape of GM - will they cut back promotional $$ -- They are burning thru billions and has to stop the bleeding. Will racing / NASCAR take a big hit? Would seem like a possibility.

IN my opinion - I think Tony is moving into an extremely risky endeavor. I sure hope he is not putting his hard earned Home Depot $$$ into the new team. High risk to me!!

Re: Stewart-Haas Racing

Sponsorships are not directly tied driver, and the Stewart/Home Depot relationship is no different. My guess is that those die hard Home Depot fans cheered for the 20 car, and will cheer just as loud when the next driver takes the wheel...

And, I would hardly consider Tony Stewart to be a traitor as you so ineloquently portray him to be. In fact, I think this will be better for the sport (more competitive teams = more competition)... am I wrong?

By the way, all of your points are pretty dumb. You are comparing Mattel with GM and using that as a reason to question how General Motors spends its marketing money? (which is used to increase business)

Do you work for Home Depot?

sprinter25 7/9/08 11:01 AM

Re: Stewart-Haas Racing

Kind of odd, but yesterday I was in a Home Depot store in the Pittsburgh area, and they had a cardboard stand-up of Carl Edwards, in his Office Depot garb - and attached to the stand-up was a picture of an Indy Car!

So I'm thinking that maybe the employees of that particular Home Depot weren't such loyal Tony fans/supporters.....:D

And ok states that its now about the $$$$.... let's not kind ourselves, it has ALWAYS been about the $$$....

And how does ok know whether or not Home Depot will follow Tony to his new team?????

And TS's comments regarding the "...Home Depot Employees...", well, he is being paid by the corporation. Did you think that maybe the company wanted TS to acknowledge them when he got the chance?

If NASCAR would to ever "Franchise" these teams, this would be a brilliant move by Tony and the other drivers who are taking ownership rolls.

mscs20 7/9/08 11:23 AM

Re: Stewart-Haas Racing

If Tony is getting paid all of this money to be the new "Highest Paid Driver" in NASCAR, where is the rational that he is spending any of his money to become part owner? One of the PR guys from Bass Pro Shop said earlier when this goes down, his share of ownership will be part of his salary. So there truly isn't much risk. Plus it is normal now for some drivers to get a percentage off the top of the sponsor dollar commitment, at the beginning of the year, if they are involved in bringing it.
Even with Haas in jail, he is one rich mo-fo. And I heard it with my own ears, Tony says he will be free of "contractual limitations" which I assume meant he could run with us more if he wanted. Or the Indy 500 even. Weather he ever does or not is one thing, but at least he will have more freedom of choice.

Home Depot fans take heart, Joey Lagano will be fun to watch and cheer for. Budwiser fans got a good one in Kasey K. And how about Kasey and that 5th place run at Eldora last night?

Did anyone notice this from the AP story about Stewart:

"Assuming Stewart does buy Haas-CNC, he'll re-establish his long
relationship with Chevrolet. The partnership was partially fractured this
season when Gibbs moved to Toyota. General Motors continued to sponsor the
sprint cup (sic) teams that Stewart also owns."

http://www.journalstar.com/articles/.../d91q7n5o2.txt

Sprint Cup=Sprint Car apparently.

Yeah, whats the difference anyway? Sloppy reporting from the AP.

His contract is up and its a team that is going to be in the go or go home group. If you've gotta get in on time who's better than Ryan? It wasn't that long ago that Newman was among the better drivers, but since it seems like the whole Penske organization has been off. Especially with the new cars. His old crew chief Matt Borland is at Haas now and it might lead to them being put together again.

When I was a young faculty member at Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State) I was recruited by the University of Illinois near the end of my first year in Springfield. I went to my boss and told him and he said "You had better talke to Don (the Dean) but he is going to be pissed. So I did. Don got from behind his desk and pulled up a chair next to mine and said, "Pat do you mind if I give you a piece of advice?" I said of course not. He said, "Patrick, institutions always want you to be loyal to them, but in the end they are rarely loyal to you. Manage your career they way you see fit."

The way I see it is that Tony is managing his career - and last time I look - institutions (race teams) fire drivers every single day.

Rumor is Chevy paid Gibbs to buy Stewart out of his contract.
It's suppose to be announced tomorrow at Chicago.
Stewart-Haas Racing with Office Depot and I hear Bass Pro.
I also heard 76 million for primary sponsor kicked around.
The driver of the #1 is also being considered as a teamate too.
If #1 doesn't go with the deal he goes to JGR.
As mentioned before it's all about the money.

Re: Stewart-Haas Racing

In today's corporate world, loyalty is a one way street. Employees can bust their asses for a company for years and help them earn millions, and then, for a few dollars savings, the company will put them on the street and move the jobs to Mexico/China/India.

Anyone who stays loyal to a company and doesn't try to better themselves is a fool.

Reserve your loyalty for family and friends.

Good luck to Tony and Ryan. Can't shed any tears for Joe Gibbs. I mean he's only left with Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano.

I'm more curious as to who will replace Newman at Penske. Maybe they will just shrink back to a two car team.

Of course, I don't hear anyone shedding any tears for Scott Riggs or Joe Nemechek. Doesn't this mean they are now out of a job?

Re: Stewart-Haas Racing

Well, the most "concrete" thing that I've heard is that Stewart/Haas Racing will field two Chevrolet's in '09, but that's about it.

I'm reading and hearing that Smoke's car will have two different sponsors, much like Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s machine. The two sponsors will be Office Depot and Old Spice. The second car from Stewart/Haas Racing will be sponsored by Jack Daniels, with Ryan Newman driving it. I read early on that Truex or Newman would be the driver, but Newman has since been the reported new-hire.

Stewart/Haas Racing can land Jack Daniels because they're being replaced at RCR by UPS, on the Clint Bowyer car. This hasn't been nearly reported like the Office Depot sponsorship.

The mention of Truex, plus the ties with Tony, Bass Pro Shops came into the rumor mill. However, I've not heard much about them, since the beginning. I don't think that you can count out Bass Pro Shops, Armor All and Subway to be involved somehow. I really unsure of Office Depot as a major sponsor for the long haul, but I could be wrong.

They're also reporting that Tony will drive #14, but I'm holding out hope that he might go back to his roots and pick #81. He's driven that number in the Busch Series before, plus his first TQ Midget ride was in the Barker #81.

I guess we'll all find out soon enough...

Redbone 7/9/08 5:24 PM

Re: Stewart-Haas Racing

It's gonna be hard to imagine Stewart without the #20. He's practically tied at the hip that number going back to the Niebel ride.

Okokok, did you lose your job at Home Depot over this matter? I think this will open more doors for the young dirt drivers out there that show potential. Tony hasn't forgotten where he came from reguardless of how much money is involved. You act like the influence of money is something new. It's racing and it isn't free, the more control you have over a market, the more money you make. I guess haters will just keep on hatin'.
