USAC at THAT Friday!

looking forward to my first trip there Friday, going early, is there anything cool to do or see in the area during the day?
Also maybe a really good place to eat at? Thanks in advance.

Stop by the old jungle park track. Pretty neat sight. I always feel like I stumbled into the ruins of racing ancestry walking around closed tracks.

We love old stuff like that, how can we find it?

500 wheels museum is on Ohio Street. In Terre, Probably closed but you can see about ten cars through the window. (Part of Don Smiths collection) Go north on 41 to Ohio, Turn right about five blocks across RR tracks..

Watch hotlaps from the infield right up on the fence in turn two, You won't regret it. I sit in the Bleachers first section Just far enough down that the roof on the main grandstand don't block any of the track. You can also see most of turn two from there . Main grandstand is a little OK, Very loud as the exhaust reverbs off the roof. Sometimes they have vintage cars near turn one but since its a makeup date, I doubt it. Vintage T shirts also sold sometimes near the Bleachers

I'll leave the rest of the tips to Shaw and others.

Last tip is to beat Indy rush Hours.

Im trying to find out if PVille will let you camp the night before a race?????? Set up at Puttnamville. Drive to THAT and camp at PVille for Sat's MSCS.

Take 41 north out of terre haute about 30 miles. Just west of turkey run state park.

There were a few that camped at Putnamville and drove their car to other tracks. If attending the MSCS it prob will be ok.

if you are taking US 41 north from Terre Haute its a little drive you have to go pass Rockville and its a few miles up the road to Jungle Park. When you see the sign to turn right to Turkey Run State Park its right up the road on your right hand side. Seems like there is a old country store or gift shop its like an old white building or house. Its right past this and to your right. The grandstand is still there and its now a canoe rental place. If you cross the creek you went too far. Turkey Run is also a very nice state park and a must see place. Some really nice trails and picnic area.

Terre Haute also has the Clabber Girl Musuem thats free. http://www.clabbergirl.com/myclabber...seum/index.php

Warning, get off 70 at the Monrovia exit, Indiana 39.Go north to 40 , then west on 40 to Brazil. Then go back to 70. They're doing road construction on 70, and after that Monrovia exit, traffic can be a pain in the butt.

A little birdie told me that the Don Smith Museum is open from 1-5 p.m. on Friday.

I plan on being there fairly early Dave. Never been there and would like to go.

Grandsons aren't going so I guess I could take you. :D

The covered grandstand at Terre Haute is one of the great nostalgic things about The Action Track....yes, it is LOUD...but it is well worth watching a hot lap session or a heat race right past the flagstand. When you see them coming off turn 4 and dancing around coming down the front straightaway and hauling it into turn one I guarantee it will raise the hair on your neck.

Re: USAC at THAT Friday!

I actually like to watch em dance going away from me down the straight, The stagger messes with em big time and the cars are never straight down the straight :)

The Don Smith Museum (Don's compound museum or the 500 wheels museum?)

If its Don's Place in Ripley? You need to see this and take the whole time as you can't possibly see it all, Cars, Artwork, Eclectic stuff and hidden humor..

If someone can confirm this, I'll just get a room for fri night and go do Smiths, THAT and LPS. You can also get to Terre Haute from his compound by taking the road its on all the way to 41 then go north on 41 till you see the fairgrounds.

If you like tenderloins. Real homemade ones. Try this place, it won the WTHI-TV contest for best in the Wabash Valley.

And if Danny's little birdie is right, don't miss Don Smith's collection. It's rare when they open that up for public viewing and what he has in that collection is extensive and unbelievable.

It is the 500 Wheels museum on Ohio Street; the place in Riley isn't open very often (usually for fundraisers, etc). There is a lot of cool stuff in the Ohio Street location - lots of racing items in the back room you can't see from the street.

Hey Dave be careful with this invitation.:18: He said he would take you but no promise in there about bringing you back. If you go make sure he gives you the keys to the truck for safe keeping.:19::D

Thanks, I'll go see the one on Ohio Street, I've only seen whats in the sidewalk display from outside. I have seen Don's before in person. He usually opens once a year for Komen fundraiser but it isn't well advertised (Understandable)

500 Wheels Museum 1-5, Plenty of time for dinner and then That, Looks to me you can get through that musuem in about a hour.

Oh and Rudy, Take sunglasses, the sun sets right in turn 3-4

The town is Riley. Just off of Hwy 159. At the intersection with Harlan Drive.
