New gen vs old sc
what is everybodys thought on old vs new gen

Re: New gen vs old sc
My personal opinion is the new gen cars put on a better show, yes I do own 2 of them but i also have the old style car.

Re: New gen vs old sc
I saw several "new" generation races, they were pretty competitive, and I have to admit...today's race wasn't that exciting. I love the old cars though. I think they should combine the old and new cars. Not only would there be full fields again, but since sc96 owns 2 new gens and 1 old gen, he could dominate the series! :thumb

Re: New gen vs old sc
While the new gen cars were putting on some competitive events they did need to be reevaluated/redesigned. They were simply butt ugly. Chet Fillip stunk up todays race but that was an exception. Most old style events were good at Richmond and most other places they ran. I think that the most important thing USAC needs to do when/if the new gen cars return is to run them in a series of their own and not force the car owners to have three cars to run for the title.

Re: New gen vs old sc
I completely agree,Silvercrown on dirt and pavement on anything under a mile and gold crown{new gen} on 1 mile and bigger,The exception would be the dirt cars would still run the mile dirt.Silvercrown pavement, and dirt would be on their own points and goldcrown pavement only with their points,And yes they need a new look.

Re: New gen vs old sc
The Traditional Silver Crown cars should run anything 1 mile and smaller be it dirt or pavement. Their schedule would be Terre Haute, Springfield, Indiana State Fairgrounds, Eldora, Syracuse, Phoenix, Richmond, Milwaukee, DuQuoin, Knoxville, IRP, Iowa, and Sacramento with two races at each of the dirt mile tracks.
The New Gen cars should be 1.25 miles and bigger with some exceptions. and bigger tracks. I like the fact that my first mentioned renewal of the Gold Crown series as the series for the New Gen cars is being bantered about. Their races could be Chicagoland, Kentucky, Nashville, Kansas, Gateway, Phoenix with there being two races at each track. Make the Phoenix date for the Silver Crown, Gold Crown, midget, and sprint divisions with the Indycars on the same weekend and get the Copper World back to a February date and kick off all the OW series in America at one time. |
Re: New gen vs old sc
From what I have heard the reason for not running the traditional cars on the mile pavement is that with the large amount of fuel being carried on the very rear of the car creates the potential for a fire that could be sprayed into the crowd and create a massive law suit.Speeds on dirt mile tracks are slower and do not run as high a risk for a highspeed rear impact.

Re: New gen vs old sc
Any info or informed speculation on what the redesign to the "Gold Crown" car will consist of? Primarily exterior mods to make it look "racier" ?
How stable was the new car on the superspeedways? Are they looking for further improvements there, as well? How did lap times of the 05-06 new gen car compare to times of the traditional cars at tracks where they've both run like Richmond, ORP, Milwaukee etc. ? I really enjoyed Richmond. It was well worth the 2 hr drive. Not as much fun as Springfield or DuQuoin, but then nothing is (imho). :usac: :nonwingfan: |
Re: New gen vs old sc
Congrats to Chet Filip. Glad to see him get the win.
Also, good to see AJ Fike have a strong finish. Personally, if USAC is going to continue to be a part of this show, I'd like to see the IRL move it to October. Let the sprints and SC run on Saturday night right after IRL qualifying and then run the IRL on Sunday afternoon. That way, USAC could get in and out in one night (cost savings to teams) and it would be a lot cooler and enjoyable. This race in the afternoon is brutal. (and yes, I know, IRL won't want to go up against the NASCAR Chase races; but I can wish) |

I've always agreed with the Gold Crown/Silver Crown idea.
I'm too partial to the older cars and have not seen the new generation cars run.(refused to) |

I thought the race was great! Your podium finishers drove their butts off to get where they finished... Chet came from 10th to win, Cameron started 16th to 2nd, and Fike started 6th to 3rd. Even Jerry Coons Jr. moved from 12th to 6th before he dropped out with 10 laps to go. I guess just watching them come up through the field picking cars off slowly is exciting to me! I was thrilled to see Chet win after having several podium finishes with the PRA the past 2 years! Same with AJ - left off were he did last year with a consistant strong finish! Glad these cars are back with USAC and a big congrats to Chet, Corey & team for finally getting that victory! :respect: Hopefully races to come bring more of these cars back out.:checkered: |
Re: New gen vs old sc
I definitely like the old cars better, for looks if nothing else. They also have put on some great races over the years. I don't really think we need open wheel, tube frame cars on tracks over a mile anyway. I feel bad for the owners that bought the new ones.

Re: New gen vs old sc
I was a confirmed member of the "dirt only for Silver Crown" club until I attended a Copper Classic at PIR in the early 90s. Since that event, Grandma Kim and I have witnessed the traditional SCs on pavement at Phoenix, Memphis, Pikes Peak, IRP, Richmond, Orlando, and Gateway. Almost all of those events produced good races. Unfortunately, chances are slim that we will have an opportunity for any SC events at Gateway or Memphis again, and Orlando and PPIR are gone. :(

Re: New gen vs old sc
From a owners point they must get more than 4 pavement races to make it worth putting a car together.6-7 races on pavement for silvercrown and 5-7 races for goldcrown would be a good start. Then I and others could run both,And most would be happy.

Re: New gen vs old sc
First, Congrats to Chet Filip, I have enjoyed watching you race since your supermodified days, this was a great win for you.
Second, a Richmond race without DD in either division is a sad day. Third, we have debated new generation car vs traditional car for three plus years now. IMO if the new generation cars would have unveiled in Phoenix in 2006 21 cars strong instead of taking two years to build the car count to 21, yesterday you would have watched the new generation car run with a respectable purse. Running the new generation cars at Richmond the past two years increased the purse by $33,500 each year. If we take the new generation car out of the equation (like it never happend) the SC purse should have been increasing at least $2000.00 to $3000.00 a year since 2005, low end $86,000, high end $89,000, yesterdays purse saw a $500 increae to the point fund from the 2005 purse of $79,500. I personally think USAC has more to address than what the car looks like. Many of you in this thread have good ideas, USAC needs to make cutting the cost of racing and securing a purse where more than the top two or three can break even their top priority. Someone posted on another thread that the Hoffman team would probably be the only team to break even in the sprint division, I would bet the 3rd place SC team would be border line as far as covering expsenses. It was really cool that a real veteran like Chet got the win. Hats off to him. Nothing against the young guns, but I can relate more to the older guys. For me, I like the old and new SC alike. I have seen both and like both. The new gen car really needs to be the Gold Crown Series, and the old style cars need to be the Silver crown series. JMO |
Re: New gen vs old sc
I think it would be a fairly safe bet that if USAC had attempted to secure the types of purses paid the last couple of years, there might have been even fewer races on the schedule this year. With all of the turmoil of the last couple of years, a race promoter might be hard pressed to believe he, or she, would be able to make money by booking such a race.
One thing I've never been certain of is just how much of the added purse the last couple of years was financed by the boys down South. A race promoter who lost money, or at best broke even, the last couple of years would not be willing to make up that difference. Jim Morrison |
Re: New gen vs old sc
The racing was pretty good for such a small field. Richmond is a truly great place to watch the Silver Crown cars.
I can guarantee that the IRP race will be better than anything we've seen the last couple years....can't wait to see a full field of Silver Crown cars again! |
Re: New gen vs old sc
I would be willing to bet that you will not see a full field at any pavement races until somebody comes up with a solid gameplan for the silvercrown div. Traditional car owners were burnt when the newgen cars came out then the guys spent big money and built new cars then they were burnt.You know the saying {Get me once shame on you get me twice shame on me get me three times and i am a #$@#$$ morone}

Re: New gen vs old sc
Here's MY proposal to fix the SC division:
Of course, it is the ONLY plan that makes any sense! 1) Dump both types of Pavement Cars 2) Merge the Dirt Series with the IRL 3) Schedule an equal number of Dirt & Pavement Races 4) All Dirt races get TRIPLE POINTS, thereby requiring any team racing for the Championship to run both Dirt & Indy Cars to win. 5) Driver Points ONLY - NO OWNER POINTS (Preventing "Specialist Drivers") steiny |
