Re: TSS updates here

Haubstadt, Indiana…….Kevin Thomas, Jr. from Cullman, Alabama has put together an incredible streak early in the 2013 AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship season, winning three straight races after Saturday night’s triumph in the “Spring Showdown” at Tri-State Speedway in a program co-sanctioned by the Midwest Sprint Car Series.

Thomas started from the pole and quickly gunned into the lead, but it was apparent early that he would be challenged by Robert Ballou, as the two stretched out a gap over the rest of the field. After a first half tormented by cautions and a red flag, the two squared off over the final 15 laps.

On lap 20, Thomas bobbled off turn-two, leading to a slidejob from Ballou into turn-three. The Rocklin, California driver narrowly held a lead at the stripe as Thomas peeled off to throw a move back at Ballou into one. The duo traded a few sliders before Ballou broke free on lap 23, but his lead would not last long.

On lap 25, Ballou banged the cushion in turn four, allowing Thomas to slip underneath and back into the lead. Although Ballou reeled Thomas back in over the final five laps as they approached traffic, Thomas prevailed by 1.123 seconds in the Mike Dutcher/RW/Tri-Star Motorsports – Black Jack Oil Company #17RW Maxim/Fisher.

“It took us a while to get things going, but Ballou and I had a really good battle there for a while. It was good racing with him for the lead, keeping it pretty clean. We just caught a break there and were able to capitalize. Winning here at Haubstadt means so much to me. I started racing a sprint car here, and I’ve worked my butt off just to be able to run up front, so to finally win a race here and have it come in a USAC show feels really good,” Thomas said.

Ballou was visibly dejected after leading a race for the third time this season only to come up short, marking his second-straight runner-up finish in the Baldwin Brothers Racing – Fox Paving #5 Maxim/Kercher Mopar.

“We’ve really come a long way at this place, and we were definitely better than them tonight. I really feel like I gave it away. I feel bad for (car owners) Ken & Margo (Baldwin) and (mechanic) Derrick Bye and everybody who helps us. I just was over-driving it a little, I guess, and I’m harder than anybody on myself. There was no room for error on that cushion tonight. Tonight was what Haubstadt is known for, and we had a great battle up there with some banzai sliders,” Ballou said.

Chase Stockon, who started 11th, came on in the race’s final laps to move into a runner-up spot, solidifying his hold on the championship point lead in the Superior Tank & Trailer – Crescent Electric Supply #32 DRC/Fisher.

“We get around this place pretty good, and I was rolling the bottom really well the first part of the race, but eventually there just wasn’t enough bite left and I had to move up. Luckily, we got some ground early, and then it got pretty dicey towards the end. I saw the leaders racing close and maybe touch wheels, so I thought we might in the right spot, but I was just happy to bring it home and get another podium,” Stockon said.

Brady Short finished fourth in the Pottorff Logging – Indiana Stone Works #11P Maxim/SPEC, while Dave Darland held onto a top-five spot after racing in the third position for most of the race in the Phillips Motorsports – Racer’s Advantage #71P DRC/Foxco.

Wes McIntyre took the bonus from B&W Auto Mart for posting Fast Time before finishing seventh, while Landon Simon accepted the cash from B&W Auto Mart for the “Hard Charger Award” after climbing from 19th to finish eighth.

I thought the "open red" was because there was a flip. My fault, they did need fuel though but not the only reason for the red.

Re: TSS updates here

CJ Leary flipped on the front straight for the red. As for lap 20 , there was no bobble, it was KT and Ballou banging wheels.

I know some here will complain, but I like the tractor parade. If it wasn't for John Deere tonight, there'd have been no racing. It rained in buckets before the night started. Tom and the crew did an outstanding job with what they had to work with.

We have attended events there for years, last night will be our last time. To us it's become ridiculous. Hard to recognize any value in the "John Deere Parade". Everyone has their own standards of enjoyment in the races they attend. We appreciate the race teams and drivers efforts last night.
Looks like with the Driver-Car combinations this year will be a very interesting year in the title chase. Maybe one of the closest we have seen. My guess is we will still see some changes with top drivers as time progresses.
Kevin Thomas and the 17 team are really clicking. Glad to see Robert Ballou in his ride, victories will come.

Let me see. Tri State sounds like they where the only track in the state running last night. They did not call it quick when they got a shower. And they got a complete show in by 10:35 local time. Sounds to me like they did a hell of a job.

Ch138 5/12/13 8:25 AM

I would take tss any night it was a great race and yes I will be back track was good thanks to the tractors I don't mind them you know there coming if you don't like it don't go....

SpfldMile 5/12/13 9:46 AM

It was my first time to the track, and I can see why people like it so much. The first half the feature was full of cautions. Hines and Cottle tangled and were stuck together for 10 or 15 min before they could be separated. Neither was really damaged either. The second half was a barnburner. The battle for the lead was fantastic. There were cars running all over the track, throwing sliders, pulling wheelies. And I can never keep my eyes off of Clayton, he is just exciting to watch. It was a fun night, I'll be back.

You are correct. Sorry I did not clarify that for you Nathan.
If not for the flip a Red would have had to come soon anyway.

You will never see me complain about the tractor show. The track reworking is one of the major reasons I drive nearly three hours over there. Because of the "green parade", I know that I will see a racy track come feature time.:6: I can't always say that at some of the tracks closer to home. :15:

Honestly, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but what am I missing here? The Helfrichs bust their butts to give everyone an awesome race, and some folks ***** about a 15-20 minute intermission to re-work that track. You all can't find ways to occupy yourselves for 15 freaking minutes? In this age of games on phones?:17: Heck, I welcomed the short break last night just to head out to the car and soak up the heat on a windy, 50 degree night.

All that said, I did have to laugh at how the RFC Chaplain worked in a reference to the tractor show in his pre-race prayer.:3:

Absolutely. My Dad came up from Oklahoma for my son's HS graduation. The graduation ended earlier than we thought it would, so we took off for Tri state. It is the first race I have been to with my Dad in 10 years. During the intermission we got to talking about the races that we used to go to when I was a kid. The intermission could have been another 20 minutes and I wouldn't have cared.
