The push trucks after a rain delay would be a better show.

My plan is to go. I have watched this type of racing since the old Micky Thompson series was on espn. I dabble in in racing the rc versions. I have traxxas slash that has been coverted to a late model for dirt oval racing. I have wanted to see one on person for a long time. Since they are a short drive away I am going. It is a lot closer than Michigan or Wisconsin. Tickets are only $15.

As I have always said I like racing. I prefer sprints and midgets but I am always open to something new.

I wonder how this race will be on the track surface?

Re: Off-Road at Eldora

Seen it on tv recently, if i'm thinking of the same thing you are it was really good racing. It was pretty much dirt track with a kicker jump thrown in. Actually as I was watching it the first thing that came to my mind was that the racing was better than modifieds or winged anything.

I will be watching it on my couch sunday afternoon off of speed.

Re: Off-Road at Eldora

Back in the glory days of Ascot, they ran off-road races on the motorcycle TT track which ran up the frontstretch and around turns 1 & 2 of the half-mile through a gap in the wall around 2 & 1 of the 1/4 mile, over the TT jump then around 4 & 3 of the quarter, out a gate about halfway down the backstretch back out onto the half and through 3 & 4 to the finish. Brought out a lot of names; the Mears Gang, Bob Gordon (Robbie's dad), possibly the Johnson's (can't remember for sure) and a couple of no-name actors, Garner and McQueen. Pretty good show. Not Sprint Cars or Midgets, but Aggie ran a little something for everybody; Flat Track on Fridays, Sprinters Saturday nights, Super Mods or Figure 8's on Sunday (on the Tee-Vee for a lot of years), and Motocross, Offroad, TT bikes, Speedway and just about anything else you could think of during the week. It was racing. It was all good.

One thing to remember Eldora is a 17,000 seat facility that needs to be used, and needs to bring in new faces. I won't be able to attend, but I am sure there will be people there who have never been and may come back. Probably a lot of kids.

What's wrong with a track being multi faceted?

I watch it a lot on TV, looks like a blast to me, in what other motorsport can you do all the things you really want to do, and most of the time get away with it. I look for it to be a big draw of spectators and cars, I remember the first time I saw it on TV, I think all they had then was the "bugs", man, did it look like fun, expensive yes, but fun is usually associated with expense, I agree with ya Chris, can't sit idle, gotta be something goin on, or it becomes a shopping center, another one! Exactly, The race I saw was good, it pulled me in to watch the tv. It was fast, and they backitin real hard in the corners. The buggys are even better, imo.

Re: Off-Road at Eldora

I have watched this series the last 2 years up here in Michigan at Red Bud motocross track and although they were light on the pro series trucks, definitely worth watching. They race side by side beating and banging on each other and unlike short track racing they do not get penalized for it. I am a diehard circle tracker but watching these guys race made has made me open up to another form of dirt racing.

For the uninspired, these aren't your daily driver trucks pulling a load down the road, they are as much a race car, maybe more so, than they are anything, the only resembelence to a truck is the outline, everything else is pure race stuff, and from what I can tell, way more expensive than you normally see at any dirt track, be it Sprint car, Midget, or Modifried, I'd say at Eldora, it would be a big draw. IMHO, they would be the next thing to a Sprint car, in crowd pleasers. Bob

I will DVR it and watch it Sunday as I will be watching USAC/MSCS Sprints cars Live Saturday evening.

Re: Off-Road at Eldora

Maybe they will start having Concerts like Limaland used to. I'd pay a hundred bucks to watch Brian Johnson piggyback Angus Young around the track while singing/playing guitar, NOT.

backitin 5/8/13 6:00 PM

Re: Off-Road at Eldora

This isnt your typical offroad truck racing, there seems to be more racing than just banging into each other such as at the typical offroad race. Its pretty cool racing. I'd go fifty bucks to see Angus play live again. 100 bucks to see Knopfler, or Stevie Ray Vaughn, well that would be priceless of course.

With "fans" like you who needs people that oppose local short track racing?

As Mr. Nunn mentioned there is absolutely nothing wrong with a track being multi faceted. In fact for a large portion of the group it's the only way they can survive and if a off road truck race, a mud bog, a enduro or a laundry list of other possible events that appeal to multiple demographics then so be it.

Sprintcarfanatic 5/8/13 8:44 PM

Re: Off-Road at Eldora

Funny, Eldora didn't need to be multi faceted before. There was nobody propped Eldora up more. I took plenty of 1st timers there. Like I said that is not what the place was built for. I will be at a local short track this weekend wether it be Limaland, Waynesfield or both.
The only reason I went this past weekend was to Honor my dad. Who took me to Eldora before I could walk or talk, It's not the same.

Re: Off-Road at Eldora

I'll be watching sprints at Haubstadt saturday night, weather permitting, but the trucks are definately worth a DVR watch on Sunday. Funny thing is saw the Red Bull trucks of Menzies Motorsports passing through town today just west of Terre Haute. Maybe THAT is next track they can set up an off road course inside! :16 LOL

hoosierhillbilly 5/8/13 10:19 PM

At the end of the day, a race track is in the entertainment business. They have to put on events to attract guests to spend money. The Indy motor speedway did this with the brickyard, the f1 race, the bike race an so forth. Churchill downs, home of the Kentucky derby, has hosted concerts like the rolling stones. Eldora is hosting a different type of racing to attract business. Who knows if it sticks.

Never been to Eldora but, I would love to go one day, and figure, one day I will.. I don't know much but, I know a business has to make a profit, or it ceases to exist. Whatever helps them sustain, and increases the chance my boy, and grandsons, will get to go there one day....I Support!

Re: Off-Road at Eldora

With the abundance of exposure Off Road Truck races get, and the lack of exposure any other dirt track racing gets, I'm bettin the off roaders will pack the house, maybe not the first time, but thereafter, and I am in no way knocking Sprint cars, Midgets and Silver crown, or any other oval track dirt venue, it's just the exposure that brings people to the racing facility, and that hopefully will bring with it more revenue to the open wheel racers.

Hay loyal drivers and fans, here is a weekend off for you. Go attend a race somewhere else or set at home and save a little money. O and by the way, the track needs a little bit added back to it, so when we drag all that extra dirt in, we will not drag it all back out. There are several pro's to this event. Why is it so hard for people to think outside of the box? By the way 2 guys from here at work are making there first ever trip to Eldora this weekend. So I know for sure it is attracting a different crowd. Kinda fun showing the guys the quick way there.

Isn't that what the billboards are for, Extra money ??How much has the All Stars been there in the last few years, People on here are even saying that Usac has been cut back, Why, Because of Monster trucks, Tractor pulls. I used to go down 10 to 12 times a year, I'm sure he's not missing my money. My brother said as we were walking in Saturday night that he would give me his extra ticket for the NASTRUCKS I told him to get someone else to go I'm not interested. They had to make the blocks (terrace) singular.
Besides the man in the original post ask what people thought, I give mine.

The all stars were running there less even before Earl left. It was many years ago when they quit running the speedweek finale. With the costs today it hard to find any group that wants to run more big fast half miles. Even then for most part your not bringing in too many new faces.

Exactly why the Hut Hundred isn't in Terre Haute, much less Indiana anymore.Big half miles.

Re: Off-Road at Eldora

I know Brent, They had 1 race last year & none for what 2 yrs. But they still did have the 3 or 4 races in a years time before that. Maybe there was something between All Star owner & racetrack owner I don't know. What about the AMA, I heard that brought in a few folks. What I was saying goes for right here in Lima at the fairgrounds. Next weekend is the big 4 wheel drive jamboree May 17, 18 & 19th. They leave the haulers at the Fairgrounds so if ya want to see them ya have to pay. I might be in town but it will be on the other side Friday & I'll drive by it on Saturday. Never went to the AMA races here either. Just not my thing.

Re: Off-Road at Eldora

This is on USAC- you know, the same people who INSISTED there not be a fan website named usacfans.com!

Who in their right mind begins a new business venture when the business they are already involved in is floundering? Oh, we've ruined pavement sprintcar racing- scrap it. Oh, NASCAR and ISC are waving money in our faces- let's alienate the car owners of our "premiere division". This is akin to a restaurant owner opening a 2nd location when no one shows up at the original.

To those who say Eldora is an entertainment venue and needs to put asses in the seats, I say, "I have an ass!"; and I used to put it in a seat 6-8 times a year. However, my money, apparently, is not wanted anymore as the grand majority of the races I once attended have dropped off the schedule!:19:

The name USAC implies that it is a club, not a company, and thus, the members of said club are in control, right? I think it's time to get the house in order. Better yet, start a club who's focus is short-track open-wheel racing.

Sincerely,
Chris Mattlin

P.S. Some things that would've been hilarious 15 years ago:
1) Go-karts race at Eldora
2) USAC promotes "Off-road" racing
3) Eldora installs "jumps" on straightaways for racing
4) Eldora schedules USAC "Off-road" race
5) USAC & Eldora promote a 4-Crown with 3 divisions
(or 5, depending on how you look at it.)
