Five Illini Racing Series teams will be swimming in the deep end of the pool this weekend at Poweri's Battle of the Center in DuQuoin.

Set Racing will be sending FOUR of its EcoTec powered cars: Sean Murphy [#5}, Mike Anderson {#7}, Mike Gass [#52], and Aaron Schunk [#53].

Not wanting to be left out of the off season fun, Fred Teer is bolting the big tires on the Honda powered #54 for Jason Allen to drive.

It will be interesting to see how these stock based DOHC motors run without the IRS mandated restrictors and real racing tires on the small indoor dirt track.

I'll try to post an update on Saturday night or during the ride home on Sunday morning.

Heading out early Saturday morning for the easy 9 hour drive. Then doing it in reverse Sunday. I guess I must love midgets. Fortunately I found a buddy to share expenses. My first trip to Du Quoin should be fun.

Re: Duquoin, Who's going (Fans)

We'll be there!!

Heading South on the 5 1/2 hour journey Friday night. Gonna' have dinner with dear friends in the epicenter of Illini Country (Champaign) Friday night, stay at their place, and then head the rest of the way down to Du Quoin Saturday morning.

Prolly stop at The Rend Lake Resort restaurant and have lunch overlooking the lake. We'll long for the times we've spent on Rend Lake while at Du Quoin for the Labor Day races.

We'll get to the Fairgrounds in time to do the Christmas Festival of Lights drive through amongst the Fairgrounds and it's lakes.

Then it's time for the main attraction! Great midget action!!

After the races we hope to get a good nights sleep at the Fairgrounds Inn and leisurely make our way back home on Sunday.

Love this weekend!!

I was planning on it for sure, then the Union Steward called me yesterday afternoon and asked if I wanted to work Sunday, which I said I would. Now I have to decide if I want to go to work on a few hours sleep, like I did when I went to the Arnie Knepper memorial race,or not.

I'll have to think this one over today, and probably tomorrow morning too.....

Scotshot, Is there a good Italian restaurant in DuQuoin? Do you or yours remember a midgeteer (owner I think) named Willard Coil from Washington Court House from many seasons ago?

Dave, there is an Italian restaurant downtown Du Quoin on Main Street. The place is called Algoni's. Really nice place but not too swanky, food is well above average.

We've eaten there a few times when we've been down to the Fair and the Labor Day weekend races on The Mile.

Good food and not too pricey. This is the link to their menu webpage. http://www.alongis.com/menu.php They have wine and beer, but not sure if they serve mixed drinks.

Scotshot might know of another Italian restaurant in Du Quoin but we're not aware of any.

If you are looking for a good place for breakfast in Du Quoin there is a place called Kalin's Cafe' not far from Algoni's that is pretty good. It's on Main Street as well but on the opposite side of the street from Algoni's.

Two of us leaving Evansville about 1:00PM. Been to every one of these events. I'll never forget the first race run in this building on a cold January day when the high temp outside was 17 degrees!

Greetings from Du quoin! Got here about 130 EST. Only five hours flat and I stopped at most rest stops and filled up once.

Drove through town a couple times. Seen the Fairgrounds and to my surprise many teams are already there and more were pulling in.

Is there a practice tonight? Didn't see any mention of one.

Any other Restaurant e recommendations would be appreciated, Not feeling much like McD's or Pizza Hut. That one mentioned is apreciated. Looking more into steak joint though.

See you all tomorrow. I'll be the fat arse in the Cincinnati Reds shirt, Jeans and a black and white hot rod jacket

NO 17* tomorrow. 56 for the high and 61 for the drive home sunday,

Chuck, trying to find a way to waist 24hrs now. Oh and BOOK YOUR ROOMS, Im at the Super 8 and I got the last room for tomorrow night (Smoking that is)

Wish I was going, but I have to work. If you leave after the races and head east, trust me, that area just east of Christopher where they put up the deer signs. They are not lying. A pretty good size buck wiped out my car on the way home. Always a good field at this race. Everyone have fun.

Jonesy, You better call and confirm you have a room here. I set up the room. Went out and about, Came back, Key wouldn't work. Went down to desk and she said I can't have it tomorrow after she already sold me it. Said she was overbooked two rooms tomorrow.

I may have to head back to I-57 to find something for tomorrow night. Im not staying in at least one of the cheaper ones in town. Look like a bad neighborhood.

Brent, Sorry to hear about your car/deer incident. Wish you and the Misses could come.

Went by the Center and about 12 teams are there and
two more pulled in as I was coming back out.

Pit BBQ down the road and a Sonic Next door. Also A seafood place. Liquor store across street from Super 8. I'll be lost in Duquoin before the nights out :)

Hey guys. If you have some time to kill Saturday afternoon and think ya' might want to imbibe in an adult beverage or two a suggestion would be a place downtown Du Quoin on Mulberry just South of Main. The name of the place is The Wet Spot.

We spent a little time in this joint the last two Labor Day Weekends in the afternoon. Let's just say the bartender at that time was somewhat easy on the eyes and dressed to maximize her tip total.

Can't be sure she'll be there Saturday afternoon but it'd be worth a look see if she is. Also, not sure I'd wanna' be in the place at 11 P.M. but it's seems plenty safe during daylight hours.

He!!, we might even see ya' there if ya' wander in the place.
