USAC Silver Crown
 

Hello IOW friends,

I have a question that is probably way out in space, impractical, would never happen, etc. But, I know as well as IOW readers know many Silver Crowns are parked and probably will remain so for many reasons. Some reasons are probably due to economy, logistics, cost's just to maintain a race car, etc. I am sure there are many more reasons. So, I ask this question only as a race fan - I am not a car owner, driver, or crew person.

Would it be possible to race 'The Big Cars' on one weekend - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday?

A scenario such as Rolling Wheels, NY on the dirt on Friday, Oswego Speedway, NY on pavement Saturday, and 'The Syracuse Mile, NY' on Sunday - would this be something to think about? Or, is this just wishful thinking from a fan's point of view?

I would certainly add this to the many things I would be thankful for when asked at the Thanksgiving dinner table.

Be tough on the teams to race three nights in a row.A lot of work for three straight nights switching between dirt and pavement, tires, towing two cars and such. Two 50's , or maybe win 75's between Rolling Wheels and Syracuse
would be nice though.

Tough it might be on the teams, but a whole lot tougher it could be if Silver Crown racing ceases to exist. I for one have seen how the Silver Crown race teams have worked. And, without a doubt they are very dedicated and some of the hardest working owners, drivers, and crew workers in all of open wheel racing, from what I have seen. What is tough from my standpoint is to get more race tracks on the schedule. The ********, logistics, economy, cost's of racing, etc., I can't do much about. All I can do is submit positive suggestions and support Silver Crown racing as I have in the past, present, and hopefully for a long future.

Note: I will be talking to USAC about my suggestion and I am sure they will give me there honest input on this matter.

You would probably have to get rides for dudes like Brett Hearn, Danny Johnson etc so the local NY crowd will show up to make something like this work

Racephoto1 touched on something that got me thinking…

Back in the day, the modifieds would run a race on Labor Day afternoon at the NY State Fair on the Syracuse Mile. After that race, everyone would load up and head 20 minutes west on Route 5 for a show at Rolling Wheels that night. Probably not practical in this day and age for the Silver Crown cars, but it’s fun to think about: Two races on the same day, twin 50’s - one 50 on the Mile in the afternoon and a second 50 that night at the Wheels.

We used to do the same thing once every spring between Rolling Wheels and Weedsport. A show at the Wheels in the afternoon. Load up and drive ten minutes for a show at Weedsport that night. Weedsport might be a bit tight for the Crown cars, though. Perfect track for sprints or midgets.

I vote for Wheels and the Mile. Switching to pavement and back again is too much work in my opinion for the teams. A day off between the two tracks should be utilized for car maintenance and a little relaxing. Anybody wants to pick this idea up and really run with it I'm in for helping all I can. I can work a phone and a keyboard (sort of). Let's go, I'll call people! Four years ago people told me I couldn't/shouldn't try to have non wing racing (410 sprints) in Ontario but I wouldn't listen. Now it looks like we'll actually have a series this year. Nothing is impossible.

I went to Syracuse the last 2 times the Big Cars ran there, over Super Dirt weekend. After they were done I went to Rolling wheels for the ESS/URC Challenge. They also ran a 100 lap small block mod feature. Great place and big enough for champ cars. Love to see it happen.

As for the logistics, our family campaigned champ dirt cars for years, so I do know the logistics. Also know the series isn't a rich mans game ,as much as it is a way for a guy to go racing a few times a year. They're small teams MOSTLY, with 2 or 3 guys at most working on them. I also know it doesn't help to have one if you have no place to play.

Still like to see a show at the Burg.

I'd love to see them back at Knoxville along with Sprints too. A USAC Doubleheader!

I have read all the posts above and all are good points.

I mentioned Rolling Wheels, Oswego, and Syracuse only as examples of a 3 day Silver Crown racing program. If it wouldn't be feasible, then that is simply the way it is. Would a two day Silver Crown program at, for another example, Terre Haute and the Indy Fairgrounds be a possibility? Or, is Silver Crown racing two days in a local area on the same weekend just wishful thinking? I for one admittedly do not know.

My point is this, many 'big cars' are garaged and not being raced. Therefore, would a car owner tow to a 3 day or 2 day Silver Crown racing program, rather than a 1 day show? I am trying to think of any possible scenario to where the Silver Crown owners just might pull the parked cars out and be able to race. I do know this for a fact, Indiana alone has a stable full of talented open wheelers that may or may not ever get the chance to get behind the wheel of a Silver Crown, let alone an Indy car. Everyone who reads this post has their "favorite out there."

Well, all I can say is this, I have seen both Brett Hearn and Danny Johnson race at both Rolling Wheels and on the Syracuse mile. And, if I had a Silver Crown, I would have no problem with either of them behind the wheel. Also, if that would be all I would have to do to get the New Yorkers to see the Silver Crowners, I would consider that a good thing.

It was funny about the crowd at Syracuse. When the mods were done running it seemed as if half the crowd left, and another took their spot. You could definately tell who was there for what.
