News from the POWRi Banquet

I talked to someone who was at the banquet and here some of what was discussed. Again this is second hand but they were there and I trust them as a source.

1.) New Midget age is 14 years old --> Im not a huge fan of this. We have kids in the micros that can cause issues that are young. I guess we will see how it goes.

2.) July 4th weekend a two day show at Little Belleville with USAC and BMARA. Thats right USAC at Little Belleville.

3.) They will host a midget week in Illinois the week before indiana midget week. It will give racers an opprotunity to run around 12 days straight is what they told me was said. --> I like this idea as it could draw some ausy guys as well as NZ guys.

4.) They are gonna promote Sun Prarie and will be working with BMARA on micro rules. Potentially open their rules up some and contrict their rules some to bring them together for a more unified package. I think this is a good thing.

This was not told to me but I think it could be made a solid assumption that the Hut 100 will be cosanctioned again if they are working together at Little Belleville and on the Midget weeks. Now if only the Gold Crown could be co sanctioned too!

Again this was told to me second hand but I consider it pretty accurate because of who it came from.

Now let the discussion begin haha:8:

Let's hope that the Gold Crown becomes co-sanctioned as well.

Any news on revamping the week of money before the Belleville nationals?

Its supposed to be 9 races in 11 days between the two of them 4 nights of Illinois midget week, then 2 nights off the Indiana midget week starts for 5 nights.

Its great timing for fans that have to travel long distances that would like to see a bunch of races in a short period of time without all that much travel.

The same goes for the drivers that travel over from Australia and New Zealand as well. That gives them an opportunity to race a bunch of times close by,which would make sending a car over look a bit more attractive for 9 races rather than just the 5 nights of midget week, and maybe a couple more along the way.In the past we've seen Michael Pickens,Brad Mosen, Mark Brown,Troy Jordon,Matt Smith, etc (for a few off the top of my head this morning) come over and race. Add in a few others from ARDC and Badger, and some others from other parts of the country, and Canada, and it makes for a good couple weeks of midget racing.

Its still early enough to start making vacation plans for!

I'd love to see them race at Eagle. I stopped in at Eagle Raceway this year on the way from McCool Junction over to US 36. I've only been to Eagle once for winged sprints years ago after Knoxville, and have wanted to go back there for either non wing sprints (I know I could have done that this past summer too) or midgets. Eagle and US 36 look like they could be sister tracks with the banking and layout of the tracks.

Oh I hope this all works out, and I can assure you I know where I will be on the 4th...the usual 45 cars PowrI brings to little Belleville plus 10-12 top shelf USAC teams...on a track like that.....WOW!!!!!

Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri has put out a tenative schedule with the following two POWRi dates:

Friday May 3rd

Saturday July 27

In years past the May date was run in conjunction with a Saturday night race at Lucas Oil Speedway.

The July date is the Saturday before the Belleville nationals. I know that the Sunday date at US36 has been quite successful for the past several years. Thus, I was wondering if they were trying to do another week of money with McCool going back to a mid week show.

USAC NATIONAL MIDGET show at Little Belleville? That will definitely be a must see. I'll be there.

I've been to big Belleville many times. This sounds like as good a reason as any to make my first visit to little Belleville. Count me in if it comes to pass.

The schedule for Lucas Oil Speedway has been released and the POWRi midgets will be part of a double bill with ASCS Warrior region on May 4th. A good weekend of midget racing in Missouri.

Did POWRi release a schedule?

I have seen the USAC, WOO Sprints, and ASCS National series schedules today.

maybe by adding 14 year olds they can bring more than 11 cars to kokomo?

but realistically, why add 14 year olds when there are scads of excellent racers out there looking for rides:10:

They are co-sanctioning with POWRi so they can get a car count. Then usac can look like they did something right.

Kokomo Klash ended up with 21 cars WITHOUT a sanction(and with only 5 or 6 USAC cars). Dont think a full field will be a problem with or without POWRi.

Didnt realize 21 cars would be considered a success over there

Well since you dont have the guts to show your name on here or where you are from since Indiana is "over there" I dont know what I am comparing to. I can guarantee you there will be more USAC cars than POWRi cars. They dont stray too far from the porch. 21 cars is a full field and in reality does matter whether there is 15 or 50 as long as its a good race?

mortboyz 12/8/12 2:24 AM

Re: News from the POWRi Banquet

Just for shitz and giggles John, what are "USAC cars" and how do you guarantee more of "them"....:D
I'm thinkin' Kunz (2-3), Wilke (1-2), Fike (1-2), Hmiel (1) and Dooling (1) were "USAC only" this season....

When he was referring to the Kokomo Klash (a non-sanctioned, very late season event), John did not say

You added an inference when you misquoted him.
As long as USAC and POWRi are at least trying to get along better, I think we should follow that lead. A true fan of midget racing would look at the co-sanctions as a positive and would not try to start a whizzing contest :20:like this thread seems to be headed.

and I hope to see both John and Morty at the co-sanctioned midget events at Kokomo and Pontoon Beach, aka "Granite City"

racefan20 12/8/12 9:40 AM

Re: News from the POWRi Banquet

Morty if you insist here was the feature from the Klash
1. 24 Tracy Hines
2. 85 Shane Hollingsworth
3. 4 Bobby East
4. 25 Jake Blackhurst
5. 99 Parker Price-Miller
6. 10 Scotty Weir
7. 39 Ross Rankine
8. 55f Taylor Ferns
9. 35 Troy DeCaire
10. 7a Dalton Armstrong
11. 55 Brad McDaniel
12. 21d Justin Dickey
13. 21k Kurt Mayhew
14. 12s Bryan Severs
15. 52c Isaac Chappel
16. 53 Aaron Schuck
17. 52 Mike Gass
18. 4 Gary Bradley
19. 16 Thomas Meseraull
DNS 5d Zack Daum
DNS 12g Chris Gurley

Of those 5 were in the top 20 in USAC points. Hines, East, Armstrong, Daum and Ferns. And 2 were in the top 20 in Powri points Blackhurst and Daum. No where did I mention USAC "only". You know as well as I do that the number of cars doesnt have anything to do with the quality of a given race. Not trying to downgrade Powri nor boost USAC, in fact I could give less of a crap who sanctions it as long as I get to see 2 good races that weekend.

Re: News from the POWRi Banquet

I don't want to get my muddy tennis shoes wet in a whizzing contest. I want to make it clear that I attend midget races sanctioned by USAC or POWRi when circumstances allow. My oldest grandson has competed in POWRi's 600cc Outlaw Micro series for the last two seasons, and there are more POWRi events relatively close to my home. And I have been a member of USAC off-and-on since the late 1960s.
For the benefit of midget racing, lets have more co-sanctioned events!

You can count on that, Kokomo is by far my favorite sprint car track and Granite City my favorite midget track. I was overjoyed to see a second midget race at Granite City and the apparent mending of fences between the Gundakers and Powri. Just too bad the other race is not on taco weekend....... or is it? :D

mortboyz 12/8/12 4:24 PM

Re: News from the POWRi Banquet

Let me begin by stating I wasn't looking for a "whizzing" contest here at all. My post was refering to post #29, not the Kokomo Klash. Hoov and I are good friends. Sorry if you mis-enterpeted that Steve, but i appreciate your analysis anyway.
I have seen/read here and other places many times of "USAC cars" or "POWRi cars"....and just wanted a definition, if you will. Hell, to me Midgets are Midgets and I love to watch all of em anytime I can, whatever the sanction.
I've been an advocate for peace in the Midget community for years between USAC and POWRi, and am happy to read the news that the "hatchet's been buried" between POWRi and Tri-City Speedway. I also agree with John, that 10 or 50 cars, I don't care as long as it's a good show.
Sorry for the outburst.......see you at the races.:D:32:
