Two questions for the fans......
First question:
If you were in charge and had to design a tour such as the East Coast swing, where would YOU take the USAC National Sprint Series next year? What part of the country? What tracks and how many races would you book? Second Question: Are time trials neccessary at USAC Sprint Car dirt events? Can USAC put on just as good of show without time trials? Re: Two questions for the fans......
The time trials are fun to watch, but I don't think they matter. The best cars almost always end up in the front.
|
Re: Two questions for the fans......
do a topless tour through california and arizona.
manzy perris petaluma chico calistoga tulare no need for qualifying if you use pill draw format with passing points,it would help save the track by not starting so early when sun still beating on track thus helping us to not have to race on dry slick crappers. :respect: |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
...I would bring back a "Buckeye Nationals" (sprints and midgets) with an added "Jack Hewitt bonus"...any driver sweeping both features on the same night would receive a $$$ bonus...Thursday through Sunday of a holiday weekend...Waynesfield, Limaland, Fremont, and Attica...
|
Re: Two questions for the fans......
I'm not sure they need to go anywhere they don't already go?
Don't try to fix things that ain't broke!:headbang Are time trials neccessary at USAC Sprint Car dirt events? HELL YES!:headbang Can USAC put on just as good of show without time trials? HELL NO! When they stop qualifying, I stop going!:headbang JMHO:wink |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
I would like to see a USAC National Sprint Car tour through the Midwest. In no particular order:
1. Lakeside Speedway (3/8 mile, slightly banked, dirt oval located in Kansas City, Kansas.) 2. Lucas Oil Speedway (3/8 mile semi-banked clay oval located in Wheatland, Missouri.) 3. Lake Ozark Speedway (1/3 Mile Banked Oval located in Eldon, Missouri.) 4. I-55 Speedway (1/3 mile high banked dirt oval located in Pevely, Missouri, near St. Louis) 5. Knoxville Speedway I like time trials. I not only like watching them but I like to hear who is driving each car and who their sponsors are. |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
A great tour would be..
Monday La Salle,Il Tuesday Pecatonica,Il Wednesday Farley,IA Thursday Independence, IA Friday Davenport, IA Saturday West Burlington, IA Sunday Open Rain Date ( I would like to see the USAC midgets run with if possible) I say keep Time Trials.. I would like to see if you come out of the B....The best you can start is 7th...Or the old way tail the back of the A. |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
Being that you have squirrels at every race, time trials are a necessity. Allows good car/drivers to start up front like they should. Invert 4 cars for heat to create action.
|
Re: Two questions for the fans......
:thumbsdown:ITS NOT EASY! ONLY A FEW TRACKS WANT USAC! ITS A IND. OHIO BASED DRIVERS AND CARS! ITS NOT THE 60s 70s
|
Re: Two questions for the fans......
Danville IL,Burlington Iowa, Knoxville Iowa, Pevely MO, Granite City IL, Red Hill (2day show)
Passing points Top 4 from B will run a 100' foot race for 2 final transfer spots. Hey..it's a show, right? |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
The problem is that it IS broken. It's supposed to be the USAC NATIONAL series, not regional. Look at the percentage of races in IL, IN, and OH. Plus, $4000 to win? That's unacceptable.
|
Re: Two questions for the fans......
Keep the time trials best part of the show.
|
Re: Two questions for the fans......
Keep the Time Trials. To me the Trials and the heats are better to watch than alot of the features
|
Re: Two questions for the fans......
I like inverting 8 cars for the heat races but if you have to run the b the best you can start the feature would be from seventh.
As for the eastern PA swing follow the same track lineups that they go to during there own speedweek out there and if they could really set it up would be to run the same shows they do only two classed non and winged racing same nights. Each night at every track they could do a Hewitt style bonus if you can win both features. I would also like to see a ILL speedweek setup granite city pevely red hill danville lincoln canton knoxville,IL also a Ohio speedweek attica fremont sharon raceway 7 eldora New Bremen ( Should have not let this track sit idle this long) |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
How bout
Dixie Speedway GA. Rome Speedway GA. Atomic Speedway TN. Crossville Speedway TN. I-30 Speedway AR. Or Devils Bowl Speedway TX Houston Raceway Park TX. State Fair Speedway OK. |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
Southern states seem too far. If Indiana is the hub they should probably focus on the areas from MO to PA. They should have some sort of plan to expand in the next 4 or 5 years to become more of a traveling series like the WoO.
|
Re: Two questions for the fans......
New Bremen is no longer sitting idle. It is gone, destroyed by the bull dozers last year.
And, unfortunately, I understand the track at Independence, Iowa, had a storm hit the grandstands. They have been condemned and the track has not been operating. Bet the old man that lives down on the corner is happy nowl. In my opinion, USAC needs to run qualifications -- especially in areas where they have not raced before. It gives the fans a better chance to identify the driver's names with the cars. that was a big help for me when I started going to the races 35 years ago. Always keep in mind that each night USAC races there is someone in the grandstand who has not seen them before. Jim Morrison |

national tour doesn't mean squat. stay in the areas where you have a strong fan base. When you go to areas like CA for turkey night, try to get at least 2 or 3 other events to compliment that show. The biggest thing stay where your fans are. Schedule the other swings around big races. if you can get a race in PA paying 8,000 to win set a race before and after that event. Thats the easy way for you to keep the "national" status.
Qualifying yes you should keep it. After qualifying drawl a pill for the invert 1 thru 8. Take the strategy out of qualifying. if you don't transfer out of the heat race, you lose your qualifying time. Put the raceing back into the heat races, I hate watching guys cruz around. |

Quals = yes. Quals set the series apart from local racing. I like that KISS draws because that makes them different than USAC. I think the "top" series needs to have quals.
As others have said, I'd like to see the Buckeye Nationals return. Hard part would be when to schedule. "Local" people you might pick up as fans are gearing up/finishing up Speedweek so saving/already spent money might cause them to stay away. Wings are going to be the choice of those people so timing would be an issue IMO. When do you do it? Going "National" is hard for two reasons. A lot of the "local" (I use that term b/c they don't run the entire schedule) heavy hitters have regular jobs and can't be away for weeks at a time. You'd want those drivers and teams involved because they have a great shot of winning any time out. You aren't going to pick up a lot of non-wing drivers in certain areas because they don't run them. So you'd have to bring the show with you. When WoO comes to PA, you don't have to worry because a ton of local cars in addition to WoO. Also, tow money would be a must. I know this was done for the eastern swing in some cases, but it would be a must if traveling long distances several times a year. |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
one more thing I was thinking about, there is all this talk about sanction fees and all that yadda yadda, How about garunteeing your sanctioned guys X amount for traveling (ex $150). The unsanctioned guys only get 1/2 the ammount if they make the feature (ex $75). When you go places you need guys to be willing to pull there wings off to run, not pull there wing and give up there first born. This is why the late model scene is explodeing, I know i am crazy but large car count drawl out large crowds. then when you do have bad weather, people know before they leave it is going to be a good show, they are much more willing to take the chance on going to the show.

Re: Two questions for the fans......
East Coast Swing? It would encompass Focus Midgets, National Midgets and Sprints - and would entail USAC to spend some marketing dollars and/or get a sponsor to help market:
Shenandoah VA - 3/8 Mile Banked Asphalt Southern National - 4/10 Mile Banked Asphalt Dirt Track at Lowes - Dirt Coastal Plains, NC - 4/10 Mile Banked Asphalt Lanier Speedway, GA - 3/8 Mile Slightly Banked Asphalt (Same weekend as Drift Atl at Road Atlanta - People could walk across the street for a Sat Night show) Dixie Speedway, GA - Dirt Memphis Motorsports Park - Asphalt - Ntl Mdgets and Sprints only And before all you "haters" start criticizing me to death (like seems to happen so often when a different opinion is expressed about USAC) I DONT CARE - opinion was asked for...opinion given... |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
1)Build a fan base. Not trying to create a market is only shooting yourself in the foot. If you're not going forward, you're going backward.
2)USAC has allowed themselves to become a group of weekend warriors. It may have to be restructured so that they have full-time race teams, including drivers. 3)It may not be possible to combine dirt/asphalt and midget/sprint since it requires two different cars for each and most teams use one transporter. |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
With less than 40 cars and with no more than one supporting class time trial are fine and add to the show. USAC's fields usally fall in that catagory. Now when there are a hundred or so cars and 3 or more supporting classes neither time nor track surface can endure it .
Also bring USAC to Florida in the winter like IMCA used to do. |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
A plains tour similar to the TNT Bandits deal they have now....
Going out: Granite City Lakeside Middle: Belleville (too fast???) Eagle Knoxville and/or Oskaloosa Coming home: Sun Prairie Route 66 Pair that up with a smaller PA swing sometime in the same year and you've got exposure in a good chunk of the country. And yes, keep qualifying. It's fun to hear the throttle and see the drivers' lines. |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
I personally think that qualifying is a must.
-It's another opportunity for the drivers to compete on a single race night. -It certainly takes the element of a bad pill draw out of the equation. -It's tradition at any open wheel race. As far as a sprint car tour...I would love to see them come to the west coast more than once a year. Maybe it could look like this: Calistoga - Wednesday Tulare - Thursday Perris - Friday Manzy - Sunday let the Perris race be a joint race with the USAC/CRA cars and who ever wanted to tag along on the other days could do so... MJ |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
ok the georgia swing is goin nowhere, Im stationed in athens and they dont know a thing about sprint cars. i was talkin to a gentleman about racin and i said i wanted to get into sprint cars and he asked me what a sprint car was. luckily i was wearin my throttle shirt to show him or he would have been lost.

Re: Two questions for the fans......
Run a series in the mid-south then up the Mississippi River:
Wednesday PIR Paducah,KY Thursday I-30 Speedway Little Rock,AR Friday Riverside Speedway West Memphis,AR Saturday I-55 Raceway Pevely,MO Sunday Tri-City Raceway Granite City,ILL This way even the first three races run in the south, you are still running in an area that has sprint cars and the area fans know what sprint car racing is all about. Run the ASCS Sprint Bandit format with heat passing points and then qualifying races, you get to see a lot of racing even before the feature. |

Re: Two questions for the fans......
As far as Qualifying goes keep it!! There is nothing like watching a guy go balls to the wall for 2 strait laps with out worrying about running over someone else. This pill draw and group qualifying is a shame it should be 1 car 2 laps flat out as fast as you can go.
I vote for a west coast swing, God knows we have plenty of killer tracks from Washington State to Arizona. I would pay top dollar to hit a swing at the following tracks. Skagit Speedway - Washington State Cottage Grove Speedway - Oregon Silver Dollar Speedway - California Calistoga Speedway - California Paris Speedway - California Manzanita speedway - Arizona:applaud: Derek Sweet |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
There are so many good tracks. I like most of the suggestions.
Time trail aren't needed but I sure do enjoy them. I love see just 1 car at a time putting it on the line...on that edge....and seeing the individual styles. |
Re: Two questions for the fans......
I'm with these guys, keep qualifying. To hear a guy in and out of the throttle, and running on the edge is great. They had group qualifying at the Bettenhausen a couple of years ago and it was garbage. Keep it one at a time. The eastern swing runs on some good tracks, it seems to be a good week. This year the weather just didn't cooperate. Some guaranteed tow money for the teams would be nice.

Re: Two questions for the fans......
:thumb Blah Blah Blah. Only two things to say. Pevely, MO and Granite City, IL would be KICK ASS non-wing races. Please make that happen.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Two questions for the fans......
i remember going to granite city for a usac show once.........as i remember the promoter was a bastard.....is the same guy still there?
