Great job by all. If you haven't been to some of these tracks, you really owe it to your self to attend these races. I can't recall any time when any of the tracks weren't extremely well prepared and the midgets put on an excellent show at all of them. I remain convinced that Lincoln Speedway is the best track most people haven't been to in the Midwest. The first three are all an hour or less from Springfield and Belleville is an hour and a half or so. There really isn't a lot of driving in this schedule.

I wish they would consider adding Vermillion County Speedway. This is a great track for Midget racing.

For those of us who have to buy plane tickets to get to either POWRi or USAC events, this looks like good news. I can't imagine why anyone would find anything negative about it.

A sanctioning body and some promoters get together to provide 4 consecutive nights of midget racing over here in tin-top and wing country, and right away Indiana folks are making fun of it :18:

I think Jerry will want to attend the Macon, Saturday June 8th, 2103 event so he can once again wax poetic about driving thru the Illinois corn and soybean fields to get to Macon. See ya there, buddy! :47:

I'm not making fun of the fact that there's a midget series in Illinois, like this one. It's great that there is, it's been a long time coming. I'm just suspicious of the timing of it. Here we are, two days removed from the Gold Crown Nationals. One of the best events all year. And it's one that POWRI ADDED an event to their schedule, right across town from Pontoon Beach, on the night of their finale. I don't think anybody with an open mind believes that this wasn't done to try to take away from Kevin Gundaker's event. Luckily, they weren't successful in doing so. Now, on the first weekday following that event, they announce Illinois Midget Week, either during or immediately preceding Indiana Midget Week? Again, who believes this wasn't done to steal the thunder of that event. A series that is most of these Indiana tracks second biggest race they have all year. And not everybody can go to races for two weeks straight, like a lot of us can. So this will cost those Indiana Midget Week tracks some fans. And those casual fans make up quite a few people who are in the stands, on any given night. Why would one of these IMW tracks want to schedule a POWRI event, when POWRI's peeing contest with USAC may cost them some revenue?

And how can there be an Illinois Midget Week that doesn't include Tri-City Speedway? That may be the best track for midgets I've ever been to.

Now, don't get me wrong, this isn't a "POWRI bad, USAC good" post, because there are cases that they do the same damn thing. The Belleville Midget Nationals, for instance. And that's wrong, too. These organizations and tracks are going to have to start working together, instead of trying to hurt these marquee events or we're going to all be in trouble. Fans, tracks, drivers, everybody. Especially in challenging times, with $4 gas and economic uncertainty.

Like I said before Jerry,blame it all on me. I am the one that has been pestering POWRi about an Illinois midget week. I go to many of their shows,and the fan in me that likes to go to a lot of races,I asked about an Illinois Midget week,by e-mailing POWRi. Kenny Brown got in touch with me,and we talked on the phone a awhile ago. He asked me for ideas,and we discussed them.

Trying to look at the big picture for the traveling fan that has to travel long distances,and the fact that a guy like Michael Pickens is willing to travel a long distance to race with POWRi the weekend before Midget Week,(as he has the last couple years) we thought that the week before Indiana Midget Week would be a good choice for a couple extra races for far away travelers such as Pickens, before heading over to Indiana for Midget week,assuming they (USAC) were going to have the schedule they have had the last few years.

I looked at it that way,as in the past I WAS the traveling fan,the guy from Maine that would travel a long ways from home, and try to get to as many races as I could in a short period of time.I live out here now,and they could run it whenever they wanted to,and I'll go watch it. I wasnt just thinking of me,however,I was thinking of others that travel long distances to go watch a lot of races in a short amount of time. I'm glad you mentioned the $4.00 a gallon gasoline. That also was part of the equation for the traveling fan,including myself.Once a person comes out here for the 2 weeks,the traveling isnt really that big between the 2 states.If a person had to come out here 2 different times of the season,it would be that much more expensive,and you might as well count out the fans that come from around the world and be able to come to both then.

There is no conspiracy on the timing of this. I have known for a few weeks when and where Illinois Midget week was going to be.Wanting to find out when I could share the news with people from as far away as Australia and New Zealand,so they can make travel plans months in advance,I inquired with Kenny Brown (whom I just met in person Saturday for the first time) and he told me I could spread the word and the dates.I just announced it here and a few other places with POWRi's ok.No conspiracy whatsoever. Just done early for the traveling fan that has to plan his vacation early,and also early enough for the fan that travels Internationally as well. I've done both in the past,both traveling long distances in the States,and traveled Internationally to Australia. Its nice to be able to have your plans made months in advance.

You gave me an idea, Steve. Since we're going to do Illinois Midget Week, let's go to Macon. This is one of the coolest tracks, in one of the neatest settings in the world. These stories are from 2009 and 2010, but since this area hasn't changed too much in the last 50 years or so, they should still apply:

But having grown up in rural Clay County, Indiana I knew the best way to navigate this type of terrain was to use the occasional bean field to scan the horizon. Every little village of 500 people or more in the agricultural world has it’s own clump of huge grain bins. Each one, like a fingerprint, is unique to that town. The first one I saw turned out to be the skyline of Dalton City. That meant that next up would be the little racing town of Macon. And as I approached the next one, I saw what looked like a sleepy little town on the front edge, but towards the back edge you could see parked cars bulging out into both sides of the street. I knew that meant they were either having a livestock auction, there was a Jonah Fish Fry up ahead or that I had found Macon Speedway. Luckily for me it was the latter.

After being pointed to my parking spot way out in the back forty, I declined the golf cart shuttle ride that they were providing, so I could get the circulation going again in my legs, after a long drive and also take in the sights of this little country track I had never seen before. I went to the gate and got a pit pass. The first thing obvious was that there were a ton of micro midgets in the house, tonight. And as I got around to the end of the track, it was just as obvious that the midget division pond was stocked, big time! I saw Tony Stewart, Dave Darland, Bryan Clauson, Brett Anderson, Brad Kuhn, Brad Loyet, Brent Beauchamp and Shane Hmiel to name a few. And big groups of people were gathered around Kenny Schrader and Kenny Wallace, who would be driving modifieds tonight. Not bad for a Wednesday night way out in farm land, huh? It’s an ample facility, too. Plenty of seating. A scoring tower in the middle of the track. There’s even a lounge, complete with neon signs, in turn 4. It’s a nice higher banked dark dirt oval, that even though they list it as a 1/5 mile track, it looks a little bigger than that and races quite a bit bigger than that. And the racing in all three divisions turned out to be excellent.

Kenny Wallace may act goofy when they put him on these NASCAR shows, but when you put him in a modified and show him a green flag, you see real quick how he earned the right to act goofy in front of the NASCAR cameras. He can flat out take one of those big sleds and throw it around a bullring fast, with amazing precision. And he had to as Tim Hancock and the aforementioned Schrader were on their game this night, as well.

The 600cc Micro feature was even better. The whole race was complete chaos, especially the furious first half battle for the lead. Guys like Joe Miller and Dereck King riding the fence. Others diving for the tires. Slide jobs, bicycling, jumping the cushion. You name it, you had it. And once Miller got the lead for good, it got even more interesting. It was almost Clayton-esque the way he was playing with fire, using the cushion the way he was. It had already drawn several drivers into that wall and it wasn’t done, yet.

The first thing worth mentioning was that we were starting a POWRI Midget feature without either Brad Kuhn or Brad Loyet. Loyet had been sent home for a very, very, very ill-advised slide job that smashed Joey Moughan into the wall. There was no way for Joey to evade it, as Loyet came all the way from the bottom of the track to run into him up near the top groove. It was such a bad deal that the many in the crowd were actually trying to egg Joey on, once climbed out of his car, to go to the opposite side of the track and get Brad. The officials were there to prevent that from happening and eventually they made the right call, IMO. And from what I was told, Brad Kuhn’s motor gave up the ghost and he was never a factor, all evening. Shane Hmiel took early command and led until Anderson slid him for the lead and never looked back. There was a lot of great racing throughout the field, as Brent Beauchamp recovered from an early race Tommy Tipover that sent he and Bryan Clauson to the back. Brent passed a bunch of cars, but was collected when Stewart was sucked into the wall, on lap 23. That was also minor roll over that the work area crew (they do a good job of this, at this track) were able to fix and send the guy back out on the track. Bryan Clauson bided his time, then punched the time clock and made a tear through the field starting on lap twenty or so. And all the while, there was Dave Darland sneaking up through the field in one of the coolest looking midgets out there. On one yellow, late in the race, there he was sitting in third and you just had the feeling Anderson’s moments as the leader might be numbered. But hey, the defending POWRI Champ has been counted out before and here he still is. And when the checker flew, there he still was.

I may have went through a maze to get there, but you know how those type of experiments work. If there is a nice piece of cheese at the end of the maze, then the mouse feels amply rewarded and finds his way through the maze more easily the next time. After my first Macon Speedway experience, this mouse can probably find his way back to this place, blindfolded.

The females raise and tend to their young, while the bull stands guard, assuring that no one or nothing interferes with this cycle of life. All while their babies play. And the rest of their energy is devoted to slowly wandering around, finding nourishment.

Being immersed in perfect such natural order for the time it takes to drive through a hundred miles or so of it, is relaxing. Therapeutic, even.

Then you get to the final destination of this journey. The small farm town that you’ve arrived at doesn’t look like anything out of the ordinary. Like all the other villiages you’ve went through or passed near, it is a clump of houses, featuring the skyscraper of the rural world, a column of grain elevators. On the very west edge of this little country town sets a dirt oval, surrounded by grandstands. And gathered around the outside of this circuit are a few rings of race cars and race car haulers. Then evenly placed rows of automobiles and motor homes. Then you stand in a single file line to get your ticket, pass through the gate and proceed to the seat you choose.

Shortly after you’ve chosen where you want to view the evening’s entertainment from, race cars appear on the track, circling slowly. Then a man stationed on the inside of the front stretch waves a piece of cloth just as green as the landscape of this farming state you spent the last couple of hours driving across. Only this time green doesn’t represent peacefulness, calmness and natural order. Quite the contrary. It means all of those things have been shattered and are about to become a distant memory. The next four hours of your life will be about total warfare, chaos and competitors, with the help of their machines, trying to tell their version of how the order of things should be. The small bullring configuration of this arena and your proximity to all of the action only intensifies how you experience this event. The roar of some of the motors and the scream of others pushes your sense of hearing to it’s limits. The closeness of the cars cause the methanol to burn your eyes more than normal and have more of a taste than you’re accustom to. Your nearness to the racing action causes the brightly colored racing machines to fly across your field of vision at a rate that upsets your equilibrium, until your brain adjusts it’s self to it. And your sense of touch is awakened, as you’re beaned by a high-speed clod of mud. When the final checker is thrown, you leave having really experienced a night of racing, at Macon Speedway.

So, all in one afternoon and evening, you’ve been exposed to both the serene splendor of natural order and chaotic wonder of man-made disorder. What a night!!

Jerry, most of us had no clue about how well you could open our imaginations and/or memories of travelling through the Midwest in the summertime until you authored such posts as the two you revived above. So we will be looking forward to Illinois Midget Week and also to your travelogue on IOW, describing attending the events.

As a promoter of one of these proposed events, I really have a hard time understanding what the issue is...

At our last midget race at Jacksonville, there were a small handful of Indiana based cars, but the vast majority were POWRi regulars from Illinois/Missouri along with a few Wisconsin cars. I wouldn't expect USAC to reschedule their Pennsylvania sprint car swing on account of Illinois Midget Week (or whatever it ends up being called with the Micros at each show as well) - so I suspect the general make-up of the field will be similar to past POWRi bigger events held in Illinois.

For the most part, Indiana midget week will have the USAC regulars and Indiana locals, with a handful of cars from Illinois and other neighboring states traveling. I know that we haven't sent the midgets I'm involved with to Indiana Midget Week in the past and wouldn't have done so in 2013 either. They can race on weeknights in Illinois an hour or so from home, where they can't in Indiana because of jobs. I suspect that the same holds true for many Indiana-based midgets not being able to travel to Illinois for 4 straight days.

Jacksonville is 2-1/2 to 3 hours from the Indiana border. Belleville and Lincoln are similar. Knoxville is as close to Jacksonville as Indianapolis and we don't work our wing schedule in Jacksonville around what's going on in Knoxville because the distance doesn't have us sharing many cars or fans - at least not enough to determine the success or failure of a show.

As someone with some responsibility for creating a schedule for MOWA, I don't care what the IRA is doing on a given weekend in Wisconsin - even though we regularly work together and consult on issues our series have in common. And I don't suspect that the IRA in Wisconsin is paying a lot of attention to when we schedule our MOWA sprint week when they are scheduling their shows - even though on off weekends for one series or another we might send a few cars one direction or the other. They worry about what's best for the IRA, and we worry about what's best for MOWA.

The week after the proposed Illinois Midget week, the UMP Summer Nationals begin which pretty well consumes the big event budgets for tracks and the pocket books for fans in our neck of the woods for the next 6 weeks - and is a far bigger concern for me than what's going on in Indiana. Any earlier and we are prohibited by City Ordinance from running on a week night due to school. After the Summer Nationals conclude, we hold a MOWA Sprint Week, then it gets close to Illinois State Fair week and suddenly kids are back in school and are again prohibited from weeknights.

We would love for everyone from Indiana to follow 4 nights of midget racing in Illinois and we plan to roll out the red carpet for visiting fans if we end up hosting one of the events at Jacksonville. But at the same time... if we can put together four consecutive nights of racing for our area midget teams and fans - many of whom wouldn't be going to Indiana anyway, why shouldn't we?

This has nothing to do with USAC vs. POWRi or hidden agendas. As a track we have been receptive to discussing potential shows with USAC that could work over here as well. I'm sure the folks at USAC spend very little time worrying about what's going on in Illinois or with POWRi. They have to do what's best for USAC. I also am confident that POWRi's main focus is what's best for POWRi... and hopefully what's best for both of them also coincides with what's best for race fans across the Midwest. I see nothing bad for the race fan in having numerous options to watch midget racing in June 2013.

Thanks for being able to see this exactly the same way that I do,and offering some insight on how promoters think as well on scheduling various events.

The POWRi races in Illinois will mostly be cars that race with POWRi on a regular basis,with a few extra cars from here and there.

Indiana Midget Week will be mostly USAC cars,also with a few cars from here and there as well.

This site may be called Indiana Open Wheel,but there are fans from many states in the USA,and around the world that read this.Already some of those fans are starting to make plans for next years racing.Some people here just look in between the borders of the State of Indiana,where I try to look beyond them.Surely that comes from all my years of traveling to events all over the place.

I've already heard from friends in Australia planning on coming over and doing this,and it gives them more races to go to.Same goes for my retired friends that like to travel to the races.I also received an inquiry yesterday from a guy in Michigan,who has never been to the 4 tracks in Illinois,and its a chance to to to 4 new tracks all in one swoop. By the same token,I would say its safe to say my house in Indiana will be full again from traveling fans coming out for Indiana Midget week as well.

I wouldn't expect USAC to reschedule their Pennsylvania sprint car swing on account of Illinois Midget Week (or whatever it ends up being called with the Micros at each show as well) - so I suspect the general make-up of the field will be similar to past POWRi bigger events held in Illinois.

For the most part, Indiana midget week will have the USAC regulars and Indiana locals, with a handful of cars from Illinois and other neighboring states traveling. I know that we haven't sent the midgets I'm involved with to Indiana Midget Week in the past and wouldn't have done so in 2013 either. They can race on weeknights in Illinois an hour or so from home, where they can't in Indiana because of jobs. I suspect that the same holds true for many Indiana-based midgets not being able to travel to Illinois for 4 straight days.

Jacksonville is 2-1/2 to 3 hours from the Indiana border. Belleville and Lincoln are similar. Knoxville is as close to Jacksonville as Indianapolis and we don't work our wing schedule in Jacksonville around what's going on in Knoxville because the distance doesn't have us sharing many cars or fans - at least not enough to determine the success or failure of a show.

As someone with some responsibility for creating a schedule for MOWA, I don't care what the IRA is doing on a given weekend in Wisconsin - even though we regularly work together and consult on issues our series have in common. And I don't suspect that the IRA in Wisconsin is paying a lot of attention to when we schedule our MOWA sprint week when they are scheduling their shows - even though on off weekends for one series or another we might send a few cars one direction or the other. They worry about what's best for the IRA, and we worry about what's best for MOWA.

The week after the proposed Illinois Midget week, the UMP Summer Nationals begin which pretty well consumes the big event budgets for tracks and the pocket books for fans in our neck of the woods for the next 6 weeks - and is a far bigger concern for me than what's going on in Indiana. Any earlier and we are prohibited by City Ordinance from running on a week night due to school. After the Summer Nationals conclude, we hold a MOWA Sprint Week, then it gets close to Illinois State Fair week and suddenly kids are back in school and are again prohibited from weeknights.

We would love for everyone from Indiana to follow 4 nights of midget racing in Illinois and we plan to roll out the red carpet for visiting fans if we end up hosting one of the events at Jacksonville. But at the same time... if we can put together four consecutive nights of racing for our area midget teams and fans - many of whom wouldn't be going to Indiana anyway, why shouldn't we?

This has nothing to do with USAC vs. POWRi or hidden agendas. As a track we have been receptive to discussing potential shows with USAC that could work over here as well. I'm sure the folks at USAC spend very little time worrying about what's going on in Illinois or with POWRi. They have to do what's best for USAC. I also am confident that POWRi's main focus is what's best for POWRi... and hopefully what's best for both of them also coincides with what's best for race fans across the Midwest. I see nothing bad for the race fan in having numerous options to watch midget racing in June 2013.

Thanks Ken for sifting through the BS to post a very well written and informative post about an event that I for one certainly have penciled in on my racing calendar for 2013.

I have only been to two of the four tracks but in hearing from a number of Illinois residents, I would like to fill in the other two tracks as new venues next racing season. The two tracks that I have been to, Belle Clair and Macon, are two of the best midget tracks anywhere.

Mike, you owe it to yourself as a fan to see the Lincoln race if it can be fit into your plans next year -- bigger and much faster than Macon. Rim-riders and huggie-polers both find grooves to their liking. I have not yet been to Jacksonville, but feel I owe it to Mr. Dobson (and to myself :D) to get my moldy ol' carcass there next year. :31:

The promoter from Jacksonville makes some excellent points. I would like to add one more secondary issue here and that is car counts. We don't seem to be debating about conflicting sprint car events, or at least I haven't read much about them on IOW. And the reason is that there's a sprint car on every street corner in Indiana and surrounding states. Plenty to go around.

Now, if the sanctioning bodies would ever get their head out of the sand from 40-50 years ago as to engines and push truck technology, there would be plenty of midgets to go around and you people wouldn't be discussing conflicting events. Continuing to race $30,000-40,000 engines when there are OEM plants/Asian powerplants at a fraction of the cost, is just totally crazy. As long as the high dollars are needed to race a midget, don't look for things to change anytime soon.

I went there earlier this year and saw some of the most spectacular heat races I've seen all year,and a B-main won from dead last. The night before the Hut Hundred.

What I "get" about midget racing is that I attended the first of the hundreds I've seen in 1958, and there were no "haulers" or free engines to be found. But times have changed. Those days are gone. The one thing that stays the same about midget racing is your complaining that not everyone wants to do it your way. You've been explaining to us how dumb we are about engines or tires forever, it seems, and we still don't "get lt" :15: So why did you decide to highjack this thread and litter it with the same tired-ass old song?

Yeah, I know I'm way behind on my meds today, but what can one expect from an old man who still loves midget racing even if is all screwed up?!

The problem is that everyone is wondering why there was two Midget races on the same night 30 minutes apart last weekend. If POWRi and USAC would agree not to book against each other's premiere events, I don't think anyone would complain.

If POWRi, does not have it's show last Saturday, this thread never gets above a page because everyone can see the positive parts of it. Right now, everyone just sees the negative side of this because of last weekend.

Which honestly brings up a question. Since both events last weekend had great car counts, why is it such a big deal if POWRI does schedule against USAC or vice versa? There are enough midgets to go around to the midget race dates. Competition between organizations is a good thing. It will only make both work harder to make their series better and thus better for team owners, drivers and fans. Isn't that what will be best for the sport?

Four nights in a row of midget racing in Illinois certainly is a plus for the sport. Less traveling is plus. But, I'm not getting too excited over this yet and here's why. POWRi already schedules races at these tracks in the past, some with multiple dates, so until I see the entire POWRi schedule and how previous dates play out or have been eliminated or have been substituted with the proposed Illinois Midget Week, then I can make an evaluation as to the strength of the schedule. Macon and Belleville would be a perfect example. They already have been scheduling multiple midget events. Are the midget week shows additions or are we just switching dates around to fit four nights in a row of racing? If that's the case, then nothing is gained except the convenience of travel. As to 70 midgets in the St. Louis area, I can't imagine that happening any other place in the United States. Last weekend was a unique situation with a large purse offered at Tri-City and several local teams at Belleville that by and large do not stray from a 100 mile radius of St. Louis and wouldn't run a USAC show anyway. What would excite me would be 70 midgets showing up in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania or even Indiana. The USAC midget schedule has been going down hill for years. Outside of midget week, forget it. A few nights of midget racing in Indiana is pretty lame. Strike out Eldora (and who wants to run a midget there anyway) 150 miles to Ohio from Indianapolis and not one dirt race to be found. There is a gold mine of dirt tracks in Ohio but no midget racing in a state that used to be a hot bed of midget racing. Now an Ohio midget week would be really earth shaking.

I know a lot of people would like to see more tracks added, but I think for the first time it is pretty good size. If it goes good it will grow.

We enjoyed the heck out of the Buckeye Nationals a few years back Don. Perhaps the track owners/promoters didn't have as good a time as we did?

Dont quote me on this Jeff,but I am guessing their 600 micro sprints. They are winged,but they put on good racing.
