Your Thoughts on another MILLION to win @ ELODRA??
I think Eldora has held a million to win race twice. Once with Late Models, and once with sprint car < (not sure if it was wing or non-win - I think it was the MOPAR Million).
*JUST WONDERING* Would it work again? That is the question I ask all of you here on Indiana Open Wheel. Maybe a Million to win or a MILLION dollar total purse? What are your thoughts? Not to be rude and not sure what you other folks think but with Stewart owning Eldora. It would help if he talks about the race when he's interviewed on t.v.; it could help promoter the race. With Roger being the new promoter I think a race like this would have a big chance of succeeding . The only thing to worry abput is the economy and would it keep people away? < Not sure because this could be one of those race people just want to attend. QUESTIONS OF GOOD OR CONCERN What would be the best EVENT format? Would the economy keep people away? What would be the draw backs of holding a race of this caliber? Would a few commercials on t.v. help promote the race? With those sponsor billboards on the back stretch would those sponsors help promote the race? Would a race like this at Eldora Draw a good field of cars? Is Eldora the best track to hold a race like his? Could it work? Would a race like this work again (Be A Success)? IS IT POSSIBLE A MILLION TO WIN RACE COULD HAPPEN AGAIN ON A DIRT TRACK? YOUR THOUGHTS? |
Re: Your Thoughts on another MILLION to win @ ELOD
Twenty shows paying fifty thousand would strech the fun out. Maybe forty shows paying twenty five. How about a hundred shows at 10K each.
|
The Eldora Million was won by Donnie Moran in 2001, after it was rained out at the end of 2000. He actually is the only short track winner of a million dollars. Jac Haudenschild won the Mopar Million Sprint Car race in 2003 and he took home $200,000, out of the Million dollar total purse. That was awesome that year, I missed the big show, first time at Eldora and still took home around a Grand for the weekend!
Would love to see Tony use his resources to make another Million dollar total purse Non-Wing Sprint Car race happen! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Your Thoughts on another MILLION to win @ ELOD
The tickets for the Eldora Million for the late models were in the $80.00range, actually I think it was $85.00. Don't remember what it was for the MOPAR MILLION, but I was there for both. Sat through 3 days of rain, and even a little snow, for the origional October date of the Million. It was run the next year in place of the Dream in June. Good times!!!

Re: Your Thoughts on another MILLION to win @ ELOD
I too was there for both the late model million and the Mopar Million or non-wing sprint car version. The late model million was somewhat uneventful for a race of such magnitude. My most vivid memory from that weekend was watching Jack Hewitt blow an engine while leading his heat which, if he had gone on to win it, would at the very worst have put him in the first 3 rows of the 50 mile A-main. There were a handful of laps left and Ol' Jack was drivin' away from 'em. It was really a disappointment for us in the stands so I can only imagine how Jack felt. That heat victory would have given us some stout ammunition to use on all my friends who were staunch mud taxi fans but it wasn't to be.
The Mopar Million was some great racing all the way around with the early to mid-race action of the A-main being some great stuff with Russ Gamester, Dean Jacobs, Dickie Gaines and Haud dukin' it out and then Haud drivin' away in the latter stages. Don't know if a million dollar race could be feasible in the present economic environment. I'm just glad we were able to attend the two that have already taken place. |
Haud only drove away for awhile, Stevie Smith nearly beat him to the line, in his one and only Non-Wing Feature event! It was awesome!

Re: Your Thoughts on another MILLION to win @ ELOD
I liked the way they did the Mopar Million, but it dosen't really matter what I think, it only matters if the person with the track is willing to put the race on. Even for a guy like Tony Stewart this is a big risk. Who knows some where in the sale contract Earl may have said you can't do the million again. I know he was awful proud of those races, and said they were one time only.

Re: Your Thoughts on another MILLION to win @ ELOD
It is interesting just sitting back and thinking about an event of this type again. Whether it be traditional sprints or late models, a promoter would be taking a rather large risk of putting enough butts in the bleachers to make this a viable opportunity. With the current economic environment, I don't see anyone including Tony who would feel comfortable enough to strap on this risk. However, with that being said, maybe Tony along with Roger might be the ones who step up and make this happen. With all of the companies who support Eldora with sponsorship, with Tony's connections they might be able to get this accomplished.
If I had a choice, I would rather see a three day show like Tri City has done with the midgets and Kokomo is doing this year with the sprints. It doesn't have to be $1 million to win or a million dollar show, just put together something that pays well throughout the entire field. In my opinion, that is what draws cars and fans. Many top heavy payouts haven't had nearly as many racers in recent years because you only have one winner. If you don't have the cars, most of the time you don't have the fans either. Scheduling would be kind of tricky as well. I believe you would have to have this when other tracks aren't running. So it would be either an early spring race or a late fall race. Weather concerns in the spring would make me think that a fall date would be better. Then you run into college football on Saturdays or NFL on Sundays as competition. Also, you have to have the right ticket pricing to go along with this. If it is too high you risk fans not coming especially with a downturned economy. I am sure others would want PPV so maybe you could make that worthwhile. Eldora runs a number of high dollar shows already and that makes me wonder if they would even consider it again. I guess we can only wait and wonder what the future will bring. |

It was a VERY VERY good purse back through the field. |

The MOPAR Million was one of the greatest weekends of racing I have ever witnessed. Even qualifying was exciting...I think they flipped about 7 just qualifying. Also, in many of the "BIG" shows the feature is anti-climatic or, a downright disappointment. The MOPAR feature was incredible......there were all going after it. Dickie Gaines put on a great show in Hoffman's car and almost won the thing. He led most of the race......

Re: Your Thoughts on another MILLION to win @ ELOD
3/4 million purse for the 600cc micro sprint and 1/4 million purse for the 270cc micro sprints on the kart track. A lot will disagree, but the micro sprints provide some of the best racing I've ever seen.
Maybe even 1/4 million 270s, 1/4 million for the 750cc+ upright and micros, and then 1/2 million for the 600s. OR lol. 1/4 million 270s, 1/4 million 600s, 1/4 million 750+ uprights and micros, and 1/4 million midgets. |

Still much better than the four crowns I've attended and he paid ten grand to win each several years with a extra ten if you won all four. This ended a couple years before Jack actually did it. I'll just say Im very glad I witnessed it and that he held it and held it the way he did. Thanks Earl! |

Look at the shirts that were made and see how many names are listed and they were no shows that weekend. And several drivers in the race were not listed on the shirt because they bought other people's entries. |

I think Earl only did it because he could, and you can't take it with ya. There will only be one Earl. Maybe Tony will when he gets as old as Earl was. I've wondered why Earl's son wasn't the one to take over the track especially since he use to do a good job announcing there. With gas prices projected to possibly go over $5 a gallon, there could be a lot of races we are used to seeing in jeopardy now. I'm more worried about that, but another million race sure would be cool.
