Chili Bowl wrap-up

For me it was a ho-hum week. Average track conditions at best, the racing was way too much follow the leader. I figured we were building to a big Saturday finish but the deal with Donnie Ray took the wind out of that sail for me plus watching the Swindell show did not add any excitement. The only thing that will be remembered about the Saturday race is Coon Dog and BC's race passes and Sammy' whining about traffic in victory lane. It was better than being stuck at home or work though and next year is bound to be better.

I know the Swindell's are great dirt racers but how light and different are those cars? Just seems a little odd with all that talent they end up in the front rows the last few years.

I heard Swindell talking about the reality of even matched cars and traffic, didn't hear any whining.

Those guys have just figured something out chassis or set-up wise that the others haven't. I too would have liked to seen more passing, but I also think that Swindell should be given more credit by some

Just a question, not at all a shot. But does Kevin Swindell run anything other than the Chili Bowl? Obviously he has one track figured out but I'd like to see how good he really is by running a national series of some sort.

He actually ran Knoxville weekly program this last year. Despite missing a few races he earned rookie of the year in 2011 of Knoxville Raceway.

I think it's more about Sammy having something figured out related to the engineering of the car specific for that track than it is Kevin having something figured out about driving the track. Just my opinion though

He didn't run any K&N East race at all in 2011. Last season he ran the ARCA race at Daytona and finished 12th. He also ran the Nationwide race at Dover in Trevor Bayne's car and finished 31st. He got wrecked under caution, but I seem to remember him doing well.

Otherwise he doesn't race nearly as often as many open wheel guys do.

It was my first Chili Bowl, and I loved it. I just think the whole atmosphere and excitement was great. I would have liked to see a challenge for the lead also, but give credit where credit is due. The Swindell group has got something figured out, whether it be chassis, or motor, or both. I know they are good drivers, but there are alot of good drivers there. Someone else can step up and build a race specific car and maybe have some success. Methanol fumes and dirt flyin in January, you gotta love it.

thats the problem Midget racing is all ready to expensive for the payouts and the chili bowl is going the wrong way with the purpose built cars and motors the swindels cars are not legal to run any where else but the chili bowl put them in a level playing field and then lets see how they do.:deadhorse:

Think ol "SMOKE" didn't come loaded for Bear. Stop looking for cheaters and watch how they (Sammy and Kevin) attack the track.
Sammy works that bearm to perfection lap in and lap out. If you want to make it even take away the bearm.:11;

there not cheating because there are no rules but not every one can afford to build a special car for this race heck I could attack the track in one of there cars

My first chili bowl too. Loved it. One thing I did notice was the Swindells were pitted with a shock company. Every time the cars would be pushed thru the pits they would put covers on the front coil overs to get thru the pits. Then a guy would take the covers off as they were being pushed down the ramp out of the pits. Obvious trick pieces that they wanted no spying eyes on. soon as car comes off the track covers went back on before it was pushed back to their pits. Sure thats not all of it but probably one reason they could go after that berm with the confidence they did.

As much as I do not care for the Swindell's, guess what, my money is already on them for next year.

just a psych to distract attention.
the cars are purpose built and there is nothing on them that cant be bought by anyone. assembling and setting them up....well. thats a totally different story.
kevin is benefiting tremendously from sammys incredible knowledge of knowing what needs to be done and exactly when to do it.
IMO....very light cars, very drivable motors, very smart setup guy....and a buttload of luck.

To start the DRC tragedy really took the excitement out of Saturdays event. Just a really sad day and puts alot in perspective. I might get heat for this but during the time I spent in the pits if you look at Sammy he is always working on something trying to get the car better. I dont think they are cheating. The way I see it is they are 200+ other drivers and teams that have the opportunity to figure something out and try to beat them and so far nobody has found the answer. I'm ok with that. For me at the end of the day I had another great week and was able to see racing in January and was able to catch up with alot of friends that I have made over the past 10 years.

I have to shake my head at someone who finds fault with this years Chile Bowl. I thought the racing was terrific. I don't prefer a perfect dirt track but think a cushion, rut or two and some general uneveness is part of the sport. I personally consider the week the best deal in racing and this ain't my first rodeo. Pavement racing is performed on near perfect surfaces, need I say more?

When they are good they sure do make it look easy. I could do that too but then I would need an oxygen tank for anything over two laps.

Both of the Swindell motors are legal anywhere. Kevin's was a 19k dollar sealed "EST" motor that ran all year in Kyle Hamilton's pavement car. It's for sale, BTW.

Sammy's is a 12 y-o TST (Titanium Short Track) motor that anyone can buy.

Not to attack or defend, but the idea that the Swindell's are the only ones with purpose built Chili Bowl cars, or that they can afford more than others in the pits is just funny. I dare you to walk around and just look at the dollars being spent by some... to run the E Main.
