Worst in the last ??? years?
 

Could this be the worst wreck in the last 40+ years? I'm pretty sure it's the worst in my lifetime. Sure do hope all drivers come out okay.

The worst wreck I ever saw was Gordon Smiley. But that was a single car accident. In terms of total carnage, this one today was was up there with the worst ever.

Have never seen an open wheel car wreck involving that many cars. That sort of thing usually happens in NASCAR races at Talledega or Daytona.

Shades of the start of the 1958 Indy 500. I just hope that we didn't lose one like we did back then.

The tone of the announcers is not very reassuring.

Gregg, I could not agree more. Interviews too for that matter. Hoping for the best though, as I am sure is everyone.

From indycar.com I see that 12 cars where involved, is Wheldon the only one that was air lifted?

They are going to replay the crash once more. I don't agree with this. A fatal crash should be off limits.

I have to applaud Indycar and it's teams for this response to Dan's untimely passing. I believe this to be an unprecedented response.

I agree, they should stop showing it. The one good thing ABC should be commended for though, is that they stayed live for over two hours, until we got the update.

I agree. As hard as it is to watch this thing through the tears, this is a very special tribute. A fitting one for not only one of the great, great drivers of his generation, but one who was also universally loved by the race fans.

Jerry, have you (or anyone else) ever seen or heard of such a response to such an unwelcome tragedy? I feel as though I've witnessed an 'historic' event on the part of the teams and sanctioning body and the TV.

I've never seen anything like it, Sam. Like you, I think we all saw an amazing outpouring of respect, for this driver.

I'm young compaired to most on here. Worst wreck I have ever seen. I still can not believe what I seen. The wreck looked like something in a bad racing movie. We lost a good one today. Its a blessing that we did not lose any others.
