Little 500 vs. IRP Midgets

Which race will you attend, and why?

I'm going to catch the midget show, but I'd like a local perspective on which event is more popular.

Re: Little 500 vs. IRP Midgets

IMO...you can catch the Midgets on tar many times throughout the year, but seldom do you get to witness 33 Sprint cars, in 11 rows of 3:respect:, with 2 pit stops:eek:, run 500 laps on a high-banked 1/4/mile bullring.

It's just different!

See you there:D

I second that Morty, and I will see you there.

Re: Little 500 vs. IRP Midgets

I did the midget show for about 40 years and got fed up with the added divisions, a parking charge, etc. So I switched to the Little 500 about 6 or 7 years ago. Now I am absolutely hooked on the Little 500! It is my can't miss race every year now. I'll never go back to the midget show. 2+ hours of sprint car mayhem with no support crap. I love it!

Re: Little 500 vs. IRP Midgets

Once I witnessed the Little 500 I was hooked. I enjoy all types of racing and I particularly enjoy the dirt sprint & midget races. However, the only race that still causes the hair on the back of my neck to stand up is the start of the Little 500. I can see midgets race on asphalt quite a few times but only once a year do I get to see 33 sprint cars in 11 rows of 3 jump on the go pedal. It's Saturday night, May 24, 2008 and time for the 60th annual running of the greatest short track race in the land; The Little 500. Be there.

Re: Little 500 vs. IRP Midgets

I love IRP and I love a competitive field of pavement midgets, but it's just hard to skip the Little 500 once you've seen it. It's hard to describe because sometimes it fades in the latter half of the race....but I find myself going back because the early portions of the race are as good as it gets and there's always a chance for a close finish, such as when Aaron Pierce was chasing down Eric Gordon a few years back.

If Anderson gets another quality field and it seems like Gordon will have some challengers, I'll be back there to see it again...

.......... with no support crap.

I saw my first Little 500 back in the mid/late 60s. I've returned many times. I've been to IRP for quite a few "Night Before" events and have no intentions to ever see another one, for the reasons stated above by Seadog.

Re: Little 500 vs. IRP Midgets

I was glad to see that one end, Kirk. Two or three more laps, and Pierce would have caught us for sure, and probably would have passed for the win.

Re: Little 500 vs. IRP Midgets

I used to switch between The Little 500 and The Night Before The 500 every other year, but several years ago I opted for The Little 500.

IRP has become to much of a tourist destination. The last time I was there everyone around me was with some tour and had no clue what the midgets were about. No clue of who the drivers were or how good or bad they were. And with adding so many different classes, they lost me.

The Little 500 has more real race fans that know the drivers, teams and the cars. It is a lot of fun to sit next to someone that has a clue of what is going on.

Absolutely the Little 500. It is THE race of the year for me. I only wish that I had started going years earlier. :thumb

Re: Little 500 vs. IRP Midgets

Since we raced the midgets, maybe I am biased, but I still like the Night before.

I have been to 2 or 3 Little 500's, and it's cool. I just like the midgets better.

That said, I am going to the Little 500 again this year to help a customer.

I have never attended either just sitting in the stands, so that may have changed my opinion.

Night before at IRP, because we camp on McCray in speedway and go to thee 500. last year's IRP race was great and they ran all the midget heats, semi, and feature with only one support race. I think this year it is only the usac midgets but i could be wrong.

I have been to both and I think I prefer the "Little 500".......but, I may do what I did last year to see if Mr. Stanbrough can make it two in a row at the Lawrenceburg KISS show.

Why?

Little 500 and Indy 500 within 24 hours. That's a lot of hair raising stuff. See you at both events. I love midgets and IRP, but come on...IRP would be very smart to start hotlaps on Saturday at 8am. I'd be there and Anderson. But since I'm forced to choose, see you in Anderson! :thumb

I guess I'm the exception here, but I prefer the Midgets. IMHO, Anderson is not a good sprinter track- too small and tight. Plus the stands are cram packed, uncomfortable and , again IMO, perhaps unsafe. To me, a sprint race is a SPRINT race, not a conserve fuel, watch the tires, attrition event.
OK boys, fire away!!!

You have a point about Anderson & Sprints.
And I say IRP is too big for Midgets.
These two tracks should exchange events!

conserve fuel=you will be many lap's down

watch tire's= see above

attrition= that is part of the deal you better make sure you do your best work at the shop before you get there:checkered:

I like the sprints, i think its a good show and like the vibe from the people it's usually pretty packed in. Plus even though i've grown up around midgets i have a real passion for sprints.

I know where I'll be along with the "Rube Crew". I'll be watching the most exciiting start in sprint car racing for my 60th Little 500.

Moses 5/8/08 11:23 AM

Re: Little 500 vs. IRP Midgets

RichH,

That's why I haven't attended the Little 500. Sort of defeats the idea of a SPRINT car race. However, I've never been there, so I won't knock it. Someday I probably will make the trip to Anderson just to check it out.

For now, I think I'll stick to IRP. I'm just too big of a midget *****, and besides, I'm from Nebraska, what do I know about racing anyway?
:kookoo

I will admit the support shows are a bit of a drag to have to sit through. I get enough fender action at home, I don't need any when I go to Indianapolis.

I am still trying to make up my mind, have been going to IRP for many years and absolutely love it, but since my kid has been racing at Anderson in the Kenyon Midgets and it looks like most everyone on this board prefers the little 5, we may just see you all there.

IRP its 5 minutes from my house. A second reason was to see BC run but he found out he will be running Charlotte that day

Re: Little 500 vs. IRP Midgets

The biggest misconception I had about the Little 500 is that they take it easy. Upon watching my first one, I realized that there is no time to take it easy. The good guys start fast and keep going fast. It's mind-blowing the pace they keep through the race...

I've seen some guys get robbed at the little 5 too so hopefully they can come back this year and do well, b/c the past 2 years bad things have happened

He has forgotten more about the Little 500 than most people know.:respect: Just to sit down and talk about this race with him is always an enjoyable experience. I have had the good fortune to be friends with Checker'd Past for over 30 years. If you have a question about the Little 500, I would start by asking him. The view from turn 2, top row, section Q if memory serves me correctly.

Dude, that's a great idea! I only said 8am because of the old Copper Classic. There was nothing quite so satisfying as grabbing a big mug of coffee and watching midget/silver crown/supermodified hotlaps in the Arizona Friday/Saturday morning sun. I miss the original Copper Classic.

I agree with the preferring midgets part, I've always loved midgets. I disagree with the conserving fuel/tires part. For years my buddies tried to talk me into going to the little 500. I always declined due to having to get up early for the Indy 500 the next day. I figured the little 500 took forever with crashes and guys just plugging around saving equipment, etc...
Finally I agreed to go, just to shut my buddies up. Man was I wrong about the little 500! I was shocked at how just the opposite it is. The race is over very quickly for 500 laps. AND, if you just drive around saving tires/fuel...you are going MANY laps down in a hurry. The race is run at a frenzied pace, it is fantastic! My first one was many years ago and I haven't missed one since. :respect:
David.
