transponders????

I know this has been discussed before...as far as the issue on whether or not drivers should have one-way radios so officials can communicate with drivers...but I think it would have saved a lot of equipment if the teams had them at THAT when they had the 5 or 6 car pile up. I wonder if anybody that said they didn't wanna spend the extra few hundred bucks to purchase the radio would change their mind if they were in an accident like that and tore up even more money worth of equipment?? Just thinking outloud. I was against them at first, but after this I think it would be very helpful; would help l/u's too.

Are you talking about the one-way radios where officials talk to the drivers or are you talking about transponders where the car crosses a wire buried in the track for timing and scoring?

I could be wrong, but I think MSCS doesn't require one-way radios. I am sure USAC does though. Feel free to correct me.

I'm not sure that USAC even requires them except in Silver Crown...I know MSCS doesnt require them, but my point was that maybe they should. It might have kept the incident Sunday from taking place...

We use the radios in ASCS. They're good for line-ups, etc. (although I think the infield officials should also have a black board as well as the radios in case of radio malfunction), but it's been my experience that I've seen the yellow light long before I heard it in my ear. Remember, the person transmitting has to see the yellow before they can warn the drivers and, usually, by that time I've already seen the light.

Some tracks previously had a system in which a yellow light came on on the car dash anytime the flagman flipped on the track yellow. This may have helped, but things happen pretty fast out there, especially when you're looking into the sun.

USAC Sprint rule book rule 320.A.1 - "One-way radios will be required for all cars."

I do agree with your point, though.

I am sure things happen very quickly, I've raced things that were not nearly as powerful as sprints and things happened quickly even then. I was just eluding to situations such as Terre Haute where dust/sun was blinding and drivers couldn't see an accident nearly a straightaway ahead of them.

I've used the one-way radio for several years starting with the ford focus midgets all the way through the national midgets and sprint cars and can attest to them saving us a car or two. USAC will notify you if the caution or red is out and also if there is oil somewhere on the track. The best example of this was at the milwaukee mile a couple years ago in the midget when teddy beach had lost an engine in 3 and oiled the track down. Halfway down the backstraight running 150+ mph they jumped on the radio and let us know giving time to get slowed down, had they not it would have been a big big crash. Lineups, penalty explainations, and even letting you know when you are coming to the green all make it worth the money. There is nothing I hate more than when we run a local show with our sprintcar and have to roll around for five laps because either someone is being an idiot trying to restart in the wrong spot or someone has a flat and wont pull in, the radio stops most of that.

They are required in the USAC Regional Series, Midgets, Focus and Kenyons

Re: transponders????

well even though MSCS tends to have more "low budget" teams, i still think it would be wise to require them in their sanctioning body. I bed DC, Jared Fox, and anybody else who was involved in the wreck at THAT would agree. Granted it won't stop every mishap, but it would have to help right?

Jared Fox? come on Farris.. I think it was Dusty Wright, DC, Bill Rose, Ricky Williams, and Kenny Biro all involved in it.

Very few drivers I have talked to like the radio's due to the fact they can not hear anything around them. (Motor, other cars) This is just my opinion on what I have heard, by the time it comes over the radio you are in the crash or past it. Just to clairify things I know there is no talk during the race it is the ear plugs that drown out the noise some driver's like to hear. Again this is just what I have been told.
