terre haute questions?
1. where did they get the trophy girl form? Asuming that was a paid apperance, not the best spent money.
2. was it really that good of a race, last day show i was at there was miserable. No, I wasen't a spectator, nothin worse than sweaten yer ass off and chokin on dust!!! 3. are all the races an unload and pit in the infeild ordeal? I understand the theory behind their thinking, but coming from somebody who has done it many times there and else where it really sucks. get there two or three hours earlier than need be and spend two or three hours longer than need be to pack all yer junk back in the trailer. if this is for all races just dont see it lasting, look for car counts to suffer. not lookin to piss anybody off just my opinion. |
Re: terre haute questions?
1. I don't know
2. For being my first race, I loved it. Dust wasn't bad until the feature, I don't know what is acceptable amount of dust is, but it was a little dusty durign the feature. Temp. wise, it was perfect. 3. I am almost positive that is how it is going to be from now on. I did see haulers on the track after the race. I doubt car count will suffer, there were 42 cars there on a rain postponed day with another race in another town and on a Sunday. Racers from 8 states, also. |

Re: terre haute questions?
Just a couple of comments on question #2. Chase Stockton won the 12 lap "B" from 13th starting position. He started the "A" in 21st and finished in 9th. Robert Ballou started the "A" in 12th and won it. In his heat, Ballou gave us a preview by starting 9th, making a really hard move into the first turn, bicycled, bounced up and down a bit, lost ground and then charged to 3rd. After the last yellow, the show that Ballou and Jesse Hockett were worth the price of admission, IMHO. In another thread someone reported that Ballou led the last 5 laps, but that was just at the start/finish line. He started by making a banzai slider on Hockett in turn 1 just after the green came out. For the next three laps they traded the lead in almost every corner. I am not sure how many times the lead actually changed those three laps, but it had to be at least 8-9. Perhaps someone was keeping track. There were other good drives, like Damian Gardner from 8th to 2nd in his heat and others.
So, yes, it was an excellent race and I say that even though I hate dust. I thought it was really that good. Frank Daigh |

I didn't really notice the trophy girl because of the girl in the short skimpy black dress in the background of the pic. now, she was hot!:O: |

Re: terre haute questions?
The dust was just as bad if not worse in the heats then the feature. I was told from the grandstands that you could not hardly see a car up till the red flag in the feature. And anyone that was listening when they talked to clayton after he was involved in the crash, he didn't have anything good to say about the dust or anything of that sort. That was the only problem other than that all was good. Unloading took a while having to shuttle accross track. but was not to bad.

Re: terre haute questions?
1. In my 50 plus years of auto racing I have never met a paid trophy girl. In the racing divisions I have been associated with the trophy girls are usually family members of someone associated with the track, a competitors daughter or a fan choosen by some sponsor to represent them and their product.
2. IMO if you do not attend a race, you have no reason to post about said race. From the post I have read everyone was glad to be back at a race at the action track. I hope my plans allow me to attend the May 22nd race on my way back to Phoenix. 3. As for unloading, from everything I have read it was the right thing to do. IMO unless you are a competitor you have no reason to whine about this. Every racing division out there has had to unload at one track or another, at Manzy unloading is a weekly event. At the end of a open practice at Oswego Speedway last Saturday the competition director came over the loudspeaker advising the competitors if your trailer is higher than x number of feet you have to unload for Sunday's race. The competitors are the ones that went from hauling to the race track with an open trailer, to the 22 & 24 foot enclosed trailers, to the tractor trailer rigs that most teams feel are needed today. They should have no reason to whine here, most short tracks do not have room in the infield for tractor trailer rigs, hence unloading is necessary to allow the paying fan and competitors families in the stands a view to see the race they are paying for. Re: terre haute questions?
The dust at Kokomo had to be as bad if not worse that THAT. Still a great race though.
In reference to the comment of never meeting a paid Trophy Girl:Obviously you have never met Linda Vaughn(Or as I like to refer to her as:"Last phase of Rookie Orientation") Last time I saw Linda in person she was coming out of the Steak and Shake on 38th street after last years race. I can't wait to get to that. It sounds as if the place has passion again. |
Re: terre haute questions?
To All,
As a partner in DHK Promotions I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended the Don Smith Classic at the Terre Haute Action Track on Sunday night, fans and participants alike. As the partner who has responsibility for the racing surface, I can only say that we moved alot of dirt in a short period of time. I personally have been at the track everyday for weeks until dark every night. Fans were so enthuzed with racing Sunday night I don't think they realized that the "Swamps" at the bottom of the apex in both turns are gone. The track is actually higher than the inside of the guardrail now. As for the conditions Sunday night, we had perfect weather, good for the participants and fans and a terrible day for the track preparer, sunny with a slight breeze. These conditions evaporated water very quickly. Watering the blackened sections would only create hazardous conditions for the cars and poor racing for the spectator's. I have recieved many thanks from the fans over the cars pitting in the infield. At the end of the day they pay for the race track improvements and upkeep and they are the consumers who use the sponsors products and services. Our mission is to revive the Action Track and to have a facility that is safe and the race fans receive a good show! We hope too see everyone for the May 22nd, Tony Hulman Classic. Sincerely, Chris Novotney |

Re: terre haute questions?
Welcome to the Indiana Open Wheel board Chris. I would like to personally and publicly "thank you" for the enourmous amount of time and work you have put into reviving the Terre Haute Action Track.
In a very short period of time, and often with very little help, you were able to bring the Action Track back to life and in a pretty spectacular way. The reconstruction, improvements and upgrades made to the track surface, drainage, guardrails, inside walls, PA system, electrical system, safety lighting, etc. are awesome. I know there is still some work to be done and some fine tuning to be made, but considering the amount of time the track has set idle and the amount of work that was done in a few short weeks, you should have nothing but pride in the show that was given the fans on Sunday afternoon. Dust is part of dirt track racing that is very difficult to control completely, especially on a day show, fighting the wind and sun. You had no more dust than Brownstown did on Saturday night for their sprint show. The big difference was the setting sun going down the back stretch which compounded the visibility issue. That has been an issue as long as I can remember. Thanks again for your enourmous contribution to the Terre Haute Action Track. :respect: Joe Chambers |
Re: terre haute questions?
:respect: Many many THANKS to you and to everyone who has had or will have a hand in bringing back THAT:thumb A good time will be had by all.

Re: terre haute questions?
First off i really think the racing sunday was probaly the best it has been there for awhile... I was one also who didn't want to unload all our stuff in the infield ,but after seeing it go pretty smooth not really a hassle after all. No me or my son was there racing.due to me hurting my back on saturday,we were planning on being there sunday,as it turned out rain was probaly a blessing for DHK not as many choices as they were on friday.plus a sunday day race at that just like the old days, yes it was dusty but the sun had more to do with the wreck than the dusk,as a driver its not as bad on the track has it is in the stands,Chris u really did a great job on the track. And just as lloyd said somebody always has a better idea on how to dothings me too...so congats to DHK job well done kenny carmichael:

Re: terre haute questions?
:idea:Just an idea about the sun going into 3. Is there any way to put a bilboard at that end of the track to block the sun. I dont think it would be safe to have it at the wall by itself but maybe set back from the wall a ways but high enough to provide shade. The same thing will be happening during the heats for the rest of the year.

Re: terre haute questions?
unless i missed it, i still didn't see an answer about unloading the rest of the year. and yes i've spent more than my fair share of time loading and unloading at race tracks. that being said the only Dirt Track it's a real need is Knoxville during the nationals.

Re: terre haute questions?
My educated guess would be that it will be the rest of the year.

Re: terre haute questions?
The Sunday afternoon start time was the rain date. That has already been established but, DHK has planned rain dates into EVERY race on the schedule. The contract with the fair board was not completed until late Feb. By that time most tracks have already set their dates or in the process of finalization. DHK did an excellant job in getting the 6 races they have with rain dates and attempt to not double up on other track's schedules which would have split the fan/competitor base. Not an easy task and not totally unavoidable. After reading all the posts that have appeared on this board, I challenge the few desentors to attend more races at THAT and see what is in store. I'm sure there is nobody that first attempted to ride a bike didn't have a shaky start but you did learn to ride and ride well.

Re: terre haute questions?
Seems a few months ago that people around here were worried, concerned and afraid that Terre Haute Action Track would no longer be around. Now that three fine gentlemen have stepped up and saved the track, instead of being appreciative, some around here are cryin', bitchin', and moanin' about some of the proceedings.
It was the first race of a new regime. Cut them some slack dudes. Not many people get it perfect the first time they try something, right? |
Re: terre haute questions?
One of the many things that we plan on doing is to redo the entire pit area inside the track. This is in the planning stages. If I have my way the concrete will be gone because it doesn't match the elevation to the track the infeild or the rest of the pit area. We know that we have to upgrade this area but we need to get a little ahead of the game first.
Push Trucks response was correct, we do plan on pitting inside from now on. I am still amazed with the response from the fans and also some of the teams. Kudo's to Joe and the push truck crew! I had a visit with Hockett and his car owner after the race. They loved everything about the track and was really impressed with the push truck team. Oh.. the only complaint was that there were not enough trash cans in the pit area.....I took that as a compliment! And to Kenny... Thanks for the reply! I know it's extra work for the teams but from your comments, it sounds like you at least can see what we are trying to accomplish. Your opinion and support is important to us! We have done a lot of work and still have a long way to go with improvrments. I can't wait to see it this time next year. Without the help and support from all of you this project would not be as rewarding as what it is. One more thing and I will shut up... To Tim Wolfe.... I would have been a ZERO Sunday if it wasn't for the your help..Thanks for your helo as well as your training. Chris Novotney |

Re: terre haute questions?
I know I am echoing comments from previous posts, but lost in all the complaints is the fact that there was a RACE at the action track!! Last year and all winter I would drive past the track and get ticked off and bummed about what had happened to the track. Sunday was awesome. Pulling into the parking lot to the sound of sprint cars engines, and the smell of burnt methanol (sp?) had my adrenaline going. Emerging from the tunnel to the infield having cars blasting past us into turn 1 sent a chill up my back. Was the track perfect? No, but I have been to plenty of night races that had worse dust than Sunday's daytime race. To the promotors and track employees, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for a great day of racing. I arrived at the track happy to be there, and left it satisfied and much happier after watching the great ending to the feature. :thumb

I'm from T.H. and I do it because I love the sport-sorry if you don't approve! Have you been to the track because I've been presenting there the past 4 years!:D Maybe if I wore less you'd approve-but I have a little thing called RESPECT FOR MYSELF and my title as MS. Indiana DGUSA. Don't worry I'm moving to FL this weekend -that was my last race there-thanks for making it so special for me!!
I do want to thank DHK Promotions for keeping the track up and running and doing so much for all the race fans around T.H. :) |
