Since no one wants to tell us who it is lets start guessing. Maybe we can have a poll. My guess is Joe Spiker.

If anyone but the O'Conner's are prepping the track it probably won't turn out good.

Even though I wouldn't wish dealing with that fair board on anyone, I would like to see Sargent and the O Conner family reinstated since they stepped up and saved this season after getting dumped on by the fair board. Pwrsonally it seems to me the board wants the place to go under.

Sargent would more than likely add a fendered "support class". I feel it is just right how it is with USAC in control and the others working the track for them. Why change what is starting to work?

I would like to see a promoter who would again have reserved seating, if only the top three or five rows. As a matter of fact, I think the seats in the top three rows are the only ones that are numbered. There are a few of us who have had the same seats for years and the ticket policy this year has been an inconvenience.

Wow, know wonder this hasnt been a good place for the last half decade or so. With people like you, cant have your cake and eat it too! You should be happy someone stepped up to the plate and got the track rockin! They needed a "fendered support class" for the hour and half long down time they had. You guys this is a nostalgia type track, we cant loose it and saturday proved why. It can still hold great racing, no matter what is making laps on that track!

There are a considerable number of "people like me" who have held the same seats for many years and don't care to play beach blanket bingo to secure a seat. That policy was in place until Mike King stopped printing reserved seat tickets last year. He did sell a season ticket, which I purchased, as did a few other people. I am willing to pay extra for a reserved seat, and always have. I have been attending races at THAT since 1967, and one thing that always set it apart from the weekly tracks was the option to have a reserved seat.

I don't think he was mad about the reserve seating. He was mad at the guy who thought they should not have fender classes.

In my opinion, why wouldnt they want to run a support class. They have plenty of downtime, and it would only add to the number of fans and cars there. And most importantly it would put more $$$ in the promoter's pocket. This place won't be around much longer by just running 4 shows a year.

I was at terre haute last weekend. I felt they should have had some modifieds. Way too much time with nothing on the track. And the track would have been wider and racier for the feature.

They should run Modifieds, it would have widend the track and the feature would have be better, I hope they get a promoter figured out sooner than later....it would be nice to know whos preping the track in advance and not find out the week of the race

I don't know if this directly related or not, but Will Ferrell was spotted in town today with cameras. Talladega Nights 2, dirt track edition?

Okay, I am being funny, but that would be neat to see a comedy about racing modifieds with Will in it.

I agree a support class might fill the dead time. But Mods are not the answer, they would take an already long down time and make it longer. It is in the history book that The Mods wreck and spin way to much. Lets have mini sprints, street stocks, 360 Sprintcars, Kenyon Midgets. Anything but Mods.

You are probably right. And, I wouldn't object to a support class to fill the downtime.

The Modifieds ran 100 laps last Saturday at LPS and only had three cautions.

Down time can be addressed in a lot of ways.

I think you get 10 big wheels 10 kids from the stand
and you race them on the front stretch. Lots of give aways
and and interaction with family and kids.

A live band of some of some sorts would be cool too.
Hell get the local country/rock radio station to come down and
they can play some tunes and give stuff away,

I do not mind the down time, I like my racing to last all night.
Friends, Cold Beer, Bench racing is all part of the experience for me.

Re: THAT Promoter for 2012.....

Hey guys, when they used to have a support class there was almost always an issue with the curfew. I remember the mods not getting to run and then they were all pissed. I don't think they actually bring in enough extra people at this track to cover their purse so the promoter would make less. Most of the time there isn't that long of down time. It just happened to be that night. I know there are plenty of fans who enjoy the idea of no support classes and a little down time to socialize and hear some interviews (which they could have done more of). No matter how they do it some one will find something to ***** about. The stock cars would be better off on their own night when they can call their own shots and put all those extra people in the stands you speak of.

I've been there when they ran sprints and a support class and they screwed around and had the same amount of down time as with just the sprint cars. The problem isn't the added class, it is the lack of organization from the promotion team to get a program run in a reasonable amount of time.

I'd sure hate to see them add a support class at the Action Track. One of the only places where you see what you came for. Saturday was enjoyable. Saw the best non-wing racing in the country and home before mid-night.

So let it go let the fair board scrtach there heads with one hand pick their nose with the other. And support the tracks digging to stay alive.

Re: THAT Promoter for 2012.....

Sorry guys (and gals) was hoping that work was going to have a story on this, but at least the paper did. Sargent and O'Conners submitted bid, now the ball is in the fair boards hands.

Quote:

LOOKING AHEAD – When the checkered flag fell on the Classic it brought to a close another unsettling year at the track, it’s future once again up in the air.

The fair board was scheduled to meet earlier this week. Hopefully the fate of racing was one of the subjects on its agenda.

Word circulating the pits over the weekend was that USAC, which served as promoter at the track this season, would not return in that role in 2012.

USAC official Jason McCord downplayed the talk Monday, stating that the sanctioning body “would do whatever it takes to protect the interest of USAC racing at the track.”

The team of Reece O’Connor and Bob Sargent once again provided the racers and fans with an excellent racing surface. For the fifth time in the past two years the pair had been called in to bail out track promotions with their track prep expertise.

The pair attempted to gain promotional rights to racing at Wabash Valley Fairgrounds this past winter but had their bid rejected. According to Sargent, they have submitted a bid for the 2012 season.

“They have our proposal. It’s up to (the fair board). USAC has told us they won’t return in a promotional role. That might provide us some leverage that we didn’t have a year ago when made our bid,” said the veteran promoter.

Hopefully the fair board doesn't spend all winter deciding this. Kinda seems like a no brainer to me.

Re: THAT Promoter for 2012.....

Some of the specifics I heard from last years proposal was a 10+ race season with multiply nascrap drivers coming in to do autograph sessions. Plus I know Sargent will advertise, I never did see a single commercial this season for a race on wthi or the cable sources I had.

They did, indeed, have some excellent WoO races once the lights were installed years ago.

Re: THAT Promoter for 2012.....

One thing is for sure, if Bob Sargent has anything to do with the promotion of THAT there will be support classes. Not saying that is good, bad or otherwise, just saying.

I too, enjoyed watching just the sprints without support classes this season at THAT. I have nothing against the mods, or any other support class, but once in a while it's great to watch only what we came to see.

Is there any word on the Sumar being rescheduled or is that a dead issue?

miledirt 9/17/11 8:49 AM

Re: THAT Promoter for 2012.....

It's very doable to have one, even two support classes at a special event and STILL keep the show moving along. I've seen Haubstadt and Pevely do it.... what drives a fan crazy is when they have support classes; run the heat races and semi's - take a ridiculously long intermission and then run the support class features first
