A tough time in Binghamton
Although not race related, the rain is effecting many of our friends and families. Our Historic city of Binghamton is in serious jeopardy of going under water. The flood wall that was built in 2006 after the big flood we had is about to be breached. The water has never been higher. Our home is fine since we are in the mountains but our Business has water in the parking lot and about a foot from the door. Many others have not been as fortunate as their homes, cars and belongings are under water. So far, we are all safe but more rain is expected. Many of you have heard about Binghamton from our participation in Indiana Racing. If you want to see this Historic City, turn on the Weather Channel. They are broadcasting live from downtown. It is not looking too good.
Keep the fine folks of Binghamton in your thoughts this day and for the next few days as many will lose their homes and personal belongings. As stated, it is a tough time for the fine folks of Binghamton New York. Thanks... Pete G. |
Re: A tough time in Binghamton
Thanks for sharing the info Pete. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the residents of Binghamton and hope that the flooding will subside quickly. Be safe and keep us updated on the situation when time permits.

Stay safe! Patti |
Re: A tough time in Binghamton
As of now it's not looking good as another big batch of unexpected rain is developed and is heading our way. Looks for sure the wall will be breached in Binghamton.

Re: A tough time in Binghamton
We in Indiana are praying for all you folks!! Thanks for the updates.

Re: A tough time in Binghamton
I just saw a report from Chris Ward of the Weather Channel standing on a bridge in downtown Binghamton. WOW! So sad to see the water at the top of the flood wall. Chris reported that they are not letting anyone into Binghamton and are asking residents to leave to avoid the obvious. The radar certainly doesn't look favorable either.:13:

Was wondering how Corning and Elmira are getting along?

Re: A tough time in Binghamton
My heart goes out to those folks. Back in 1972 I was a teenager living in NY state and I saw the awful flooding that Hurricane Agnes brought to the same areas of NY and PA.

Re: A tough time in Binghamton
I know the Speedway track in Owego is under pretty bad, worse then in 06 when I ended up having to fix most of the walls cause the posts raised up a foot or so. I will say as bad at it is thank goodness we didnt seem to get hit with a huge batch of rain that was seemingly headed this way when they were calling for 14 inches. It hasnt been raining for quite awhile, the river will crest early tonight and is already over the 100 yr flood of 2006, so much for that formula. I do know by looking at the news by the height of the water on buildings near our cottage I would have to say our cottage might be completely under. I feel bad for other people. We have insurance and are only part owners.

Re: A tough time in Binghamton

Re: A tough time in Binghamton
Well this is a first, we have never had school rained out and now in the past two weeks they have had 3 rain days. Also our cottage has been flooded in 1932, 1972, 2006 and now 2011, hmmm seems to be accelerating in frequency. I'm not going to see it but I guess just the peak is out of the water. Were selling our share and buying us a full size sprinter, probley vintage, a bigblock gambler perhaps. The river has gone down a foot and a half, the worse is over. Im praying no one was killed, you'd have to be pretty foolish if you were. The last storm folks were killed by falling tree's with all the wind pushing over the saturated root system. Pete, did your business excape the wrath ? What most people dont understand when it comes to river flooding it's not water, it's a smelly toxic soup. The main smell is a nasty oil stank. Kinda like pulling the cover off a rearend that has had the oil burnt. To be perfectly honest I'm hoping our cottage is one of the ones we seen flooding down the river on the news.

Re: A tough time in Binghamton
Thanks to all for your well wishes. We survived the flood without damage but many, many of our friends and families did not, including two of our great sponsors; Rob's Market and Uncle Tony's. Both of their Businesses were severely damaged. Many of Coleman's close friends have damage to their homes and the town where he went to High School is under water.
Coleman is running this weekend on behalf of our many friends, family and sponsors (which are family) that have been affected by this natural disaster and that is putting it mildly. It is utter devastation for so many. Good luck to all in Indiana this weekend. Thanks again, The Gulick's. |

Re: A tough time in Binghamton
Pete & Backitin, thanks for the updates. Sorry to hear your cottage was lost Backitin. Actually three hours ago a friend and I were sitting on the shores of Lake Ontario commenting about what a peaceful day it was and how horrible the devastion was just an hour to two hours away from Oswego. Both of your names came up in that conversation along with your families, my 85 year old uncle in Pa, and my cousins and their families. I was hoping and praying you all stayed safe and as Backitin mentioned that no more lives would be lost due to the flooding.
Pete, sorry to hear so many of your and Coleman's friends and sponsors have been affected by this devastion. The pictures I have seen on TV are just horrible. Prayers are going out to all those whose lives have been affected by yet another act of Mother Nature this year. Coleman pull off another win this weekend in honor of all your friends and sponsors that are suffering rigth now! I'll be cheering you on! Patti |
Re: A tough time in Binghamton
yeah it's a bummer. It's starting to dawn on my wive that a cottage her dad and granddad built in 1919 might be gone. It was built with hand powered tools which I now own and it's sad looking at the axes and draw knives I have hanging in the living room. If it's still there I'd be happy contrary to what I said and I know it's dawning on her too. If it survived after seeing video's of houses hitting the bridge only a couple miles away I'd be amazed and take a bow to my late father in law cause if it's there it's a hell of a structure. We cant get there from here so theres no sense worrying bout it, I just parked the racecar out front here at our house and me and the kids are playing with it and I know were the lucky ones.

Re: A tough time in Binghamton
Backitin, hope you get the chance to get up to the Salmon River this year and don't have too much damage to deal with from the flooding. Your cottage in the southern tier sounds like allot of love was built into it. Your wife's family must be very frustrated not being able to go check on it. Hopefully it will be safe to do so in a few days.
I know what your wife is going thru 30 odd years ago my phone rang in the middle of the night that my parents house was on fire. Neighborhood kids the police felt had broke in and robbed some electronic items and set the house on fire trying to cover up the robbery. By the time I drove the 35 to 40 minutes to Oswego the fireman had got the fire under control. They brought two small books out and set them at my feet and said that was all they felt was salvageable. Luckily my parents and brother were on vaction at the time of the fire; later that same year my Dad's brothers house caught fire from an electrical problem in the wall behind the TV my Uncle, Aunt and Cousin almost lost their lives in that fire. That year reaffirmed for me how precious life is. Soon the Pulaski area of the Salmon River will be all a buzz with fisherman when the fish start running. It is a beautiful sight seeing all the fisherman in the river! An it also helps the Pulaski economy. Enjoy the fishing season! Patti |

Re: A tough time in Binghamton
Best fishing is in November when the salmon die believe it or not, thats when the Steelhead take over all 8-25lbs or so, brite as a dime. I got mojo when it comes to steelhead and I'm usually into some of the biggest fish. The other thing is in nov. the brown trout fishing is crazy, they're easy to catch and run from like 8lb's to close to 30. The browns follow the salmon to eat the egg's then head back to the lake in late nov. The steelhead stay all winter feeding getting ready to spawn in spring then head back to lake. Some of the best steelhead fishing is in the dead of winter when we have up to 15 ft. of snow on the ground. Since my accident I cant winter fish anymore and honestly its hard getting to rivr anyhow. I fish for steelhead for the first couple hours the the rest of the day the browns are the bread and butter fish you can hook up pretty steady all day. Plus I'm not big on crowds so if I wait till nov. the salmon snaggers are gone by then and you can really fish. I'm good about the flooded cottage my wives brother likes to take over so I'm headin up for a month or so next week. Anybody wants to fish call (570) 396-8783. I'm directly off rt. 81 easy to find. It's dangerously addicting to some so be forewarned, you can end up like a fishing bum same as me. Last season on flyrod my biggest King salmon was 37lb's, my biggest Steelhead was 24lbs, and I caught a 29lb brown all in a river bout 25 yards across. Its pretty amazing actually and tll you see it you cant believe it.

Re: A tough time in Binghamton
I want you guys to know I was serious about the free fishing trips, for some people its a life changing event, like seeing your first sprintcar. I'll be off grid for the next 5 or 6 weeks. We have no cell service up there but my txt's come and go so that would be the way to go. (570) 396-8783. I can handle two folks at a time, to me it's more fun watching and teaching someone to do it after I catch my bunch early in the season. I'm spoiled when it comes to fishing, a small trout here is 10lbs.
see ya, Bob |
