Smiths Speed Shop
The Dizz Wilson thread made me think about some of the drivers Ray had.
Al Smith, Greg Weld*, Larry Dickson*, Bruce Walkup*, Jerry Poland, SuperDuke, Don Thomas, Scratch Daniels, Don Nordhorn, Joe Saldana*, Lee Kunzman*, Rollie Beale, Gary Congdon*, Daryl Harrison, Curt Waters,Fred Linder, Jim Linder, Tom Bigelow*, Rich Vogler*, MarK Alderson, Jim McCune, Bobby Davis Jr., Sammy Swindell, Gary Howard, Danny Milburn, Emmet Hahn, Carl Williams*, Lenny Waldo, Bob Ciconni. There are probably a lot more that I am Missing. I had to call Jim Simon, to verify a lot of these It's a very impressive list , 9 Indy starters in there. |
Re: Smiths Speed Shop
Didn't Steve Kinser drive one of Ray's Silver Crown cars at the first race at Terre Haute?
|
Re: Smiths Speed Shop
Yep, another one to add to the list.
|
Re: Smiths Speed Shop
Didn't Clark Templeman Jr drive for Ray??
|
Re: Smiths Speed Shop
Clark won a feature at Eldora in June of 1976 in the Smith Speed Shop Special. Add Tom Bigelow to the list.
Jim Morrison |
Re: Smiths Speed Shop

Re: Smiths Speed Shop
Rusty McClure, Brad Marvel, Lee Osborne, Larry Rice, Paul Pitzer, Sheldon Kinser, Van May, Bill Tyler, Bill Puterbaugh, , Larry Moore, Johnny Parsons, Dana Carter, Leland McSpadden, Mike Brooks.

By the way, I will add more drivers to the list saturday afternoon and I don't believe any other owner could possibly match this amount of drivers. |
Re: Smiths Speed Shop
More drivers,
Audie Swartz, Mike Johnson, Bruce Field,Jim Hurtubise*, Eddie Leavitt, Bob Wente*, Bob Pratt & Gary Ponzini. So far 55 drivers, 18 of who drove at Indy. The list keeps growing. |
Re: Smiths Speed Shop

Re: Smiths Speed Shop
Ray Smith entered a car at the Indy 500 in 1972. Tom Bigelow drove it in 15 May and 16 May but did not complete his rookie test. It was entered at #70 as a 200ci turbo Chev.
Anyone know anything about it? |

Re: Smiths Speed Shop
I know Bruce Walkup Drove Ray's car back in the late 60's because I watched him miss the show with it at Eldora. The reason I know it was in the 60's was because it was pre-roll cage. I believe Rollie Beale won the feature that day in the ugly (Alfater?) car with the real tall rectangular roll bar.
