Dick Gaines, SuperDuke, Im pretty sure Wilkerson drove for him
Chuck, not even close to knowing em all |
Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
I know my grandpa, Ron Fisher, did. My dad tells a story about grandpa following someone for too long at Bloomington. He says grandpa came into the pits, and Dizz puts his foot up on the old two-tube front bumper and says, "Boy, don't you know what this iron up here is for?" That's the story I remember.
SUPERDUKE, I've got an old Dick Wallen tape of you busting your ass out of turn two at New Bremen. Was that as hard of a hit as it looked? |
Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
Carl Williams. I know he made it to Indy.

Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
I've got pictures of the Lyle Roberts roadster after Duke Cook busted it up on the front stretch at New Bremen while qualifying in 1974.
I believe you can add Johnny Rutherford to the list of Dizz Wilson drivers. If I've go the story right, Rutherford flipped and Dizz fired him before the car came to a stop. Believe another was Gene Aldridge, from Gibson County, Ind., probably before World War II. When I worked at the Princeton newspaper in the early 1980s, a race car sat in the front yard being used as a flower planter. Supposedly, it had been owned by Dizz Wilson at one time and was purchased by Aldridge for the motor and possibly the powertrain. The last time I saw the car it was in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Museum as a display on what type of condition in which some museum pieces are originally found. Jim Morrison |

|
Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
Buzz Barton, Leroy Neumyer are two that come immediately to mind but boy there was a ton of drivers who sat behind the #71 Orange Crate and #70 Ol' Yeller at the fairs and racetracks back in the 50's and 60's.

Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
The list of drivers is endless!
Hell, even I drove Dizz's car at Paragon one night in 1982. One of the coolest things that has or will ever happen to me! I love his quote, and he meant ever word of it! |

Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
Add Greg Staab to the list, he ran the #71 car at Lawrenceburg in 1981, finishing 9th in the feature.:thumb

Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
1962 Johnny White drove the #71 and Starret from California drove the #70 at the IMCA Tampa races. I know because I drove the George Nesler #4 at those events and traveled with White. Starret lost his life after returning to California and White was paralized after a crash at Terre Haute.

Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
In researching the racing on the old Imperial (El Centro), CA half mile, A.J. Shepherd won on March 5, 1960 driving Dizz Wilson's #70 Offy. He started his only Indy 500 the next year.

Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
Richard Jackson, Dick Gaines, Calvin Gilstrap, Butch Wilkerson and A. J. Foyt are among some of the drivers in Dizz Wilson built cars. And didn't Mike Johnson also drive for Dizz?

Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
Add Rickey Hood and Johnny Krebbs to the list. Some people were hired but never got to drive the car. One story was Dizz was runing in Florida and hired 5 drivers, the first one there got the ride. He was afraid someone wouldn't show up if he had one driver.

Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
Add Ray Kenens Sr. to the list. Seems as though there was an article in Open wheel or Sprint Car and Midget, in the recent past, that listed many of Dizz Wilson"s drivers.

Pepe Marchese
Tom Helfrich Kenny Gentry Leon Hubble Elmer Davis Jeff Walker Leon Thickstun ...... after Walker got fired after hot laps Bob Papoy Terry Cummings ...... ( just the tow rig ) Dad named about 15 more but I couldn`t remember them all to write them down ..... Dan Hurst |
Re: Triva/dizz Wilson
How many times did Helfrich run a sprint car?
Not many, I'd guess. I heard at one time he drove one once, then went back to stock cars. Jim Morrison |
