Justin Grant Wins BOSS opener at K-C Raceway

Justin Grant Wins BOSS Opener at K-C Raceway
The California Kid, Justin Grant put on a spectacular show Saturday night, July 16th in winning the 2nd annual Gene Comstock Memorial at Schrader's K-C Raceway. The Ione, California native, aboard the #40 Hery Motorsports entry also won his heat, then charged from 5th starting spot to win the Comstock Cup over a tough field of 15 cars.

Two time Lawrenceburg Speedway champion Joss Moffat brought the field to green with Travis Welpot alongside. Moffat blasted out to a comfortable early lead, but 5th starting Grant wasted little time slicing his way to the front. Grant slipped past Welpot on lap 3 to take the runner-up spot, then 2 laps later bagged the lead from Moffat. The first of only 2 cautions flew on lap 7 when K-C Raceway regular Jeb Lowder spun in turn 4. The top 5 at lap 7 was Grant, Moffat, Dustin Smith, Adam Strausser, and Travis Welpot.

Once back under green, the top four ran nose to tail, but a real dogfight was developing back in the pack. Michael Fischesser had started 12th and by lap 10 he was up to 6th and battling Aaron Middaugh for a spot in the top 5. On lap 15, Moffat spun while running second and did a 360 spin in heavy traffic, yet managed to right the ship and continue on, losing only one spot to the hard charging Dustin Smith. The always exciting driver Adam Strausser was having a great run and briefly took 3rd from Moffat, but the race's 2nd caution on lap 17 for a spin, negated the pass and relegated him back to 4th. The running order at lap 17 was Grant, Smith, Moffat, Strausser, Middaugh, Fischesser, Landon Simon, Jason Soudrette, and Welpot rounding out the top 10.

On the restart, Grant flexed his muscle quickly motoring away on the high side. Strausser gave Moffat all he could handle for 3rd, but it was Todd Keen who lit up the track in he final laps charging from 11th to 5th after the final caution. Keen prevailed in the dogfight for 5th that literally went on the entire race among no less than 8 different drivers. At the stripe it was Justin Grant, followed by Dustin Smith, Joss Moffat, Adam Strausser, and Todd Keen completing the top 5. Sixth through tenth were Aaron Middaugh, Jason Soudrette, Landon Simon, Michael Fischesser, and Josh Slone. Thirteen of the 15 starters were still running at the completion of the event.

Jeb Lowder took home the $100 steel block bonus award. Justin Grant took the $100 from Hoosier tire and Aaron Middaugh claimed the $100 from Goodyear. American Racer also put up $100 and several cars had on American Racer right rears, but nobody had them on all 4 corners so the American Racer bonus was not claimed.

Adam Strausser claimed the first ever BOSS sprints checkered flag by claiming heat #1. Lewie Christian had a great run going running second in heat one when he got high and made contact with the tire wall in turn 3. Dustin Smith claimed heat #2 as Welpot and Landon Simon treated the fans to a great battle for 2nd that Welpot won. The third and final heat was claimed by Grant.

The Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series would like to thank K-C Raceway owner's Jeff and Vickie Schrader and their fine staff for hosting the series. BOSS also thanks the drivers, owners, teams, and fans who showed up to support non wing racing. A special thank you goes out to the 5 drivers who brought their cars into the general admission area and stayed for over an hour signing autographs and putting future racers in the seats of their cars. I just want to say that Aaron Fry is doing one hell of a job with this series. It was a good track, good cars were there, and it was a great race. This is truly a drivers series. What really impressed me was after the races were over and some of us drivers rolled our cars into the grandstand area it was past midnight and Aaron offered a place to stay to anyone that needed one. I plan on racing with BOSS whenever they run in the future.

Program was ran really smooth. Track was great, especially considering it was a very warm day. I don't get to help or be around much anymore due to work but it was just pure "fun" at the racetrack.

I had never been to the track, I expected a huggy pole type of track, but it was fast, I'd say much faster than a North Vernon. Fast way was around the top.... Definately a "balls to the wall" track.

Re: Justin Grant Wins BOSS opener at K-C Race

Had a blast running Saturday night! Glad the first BOSS show wound up being at KC where everybody is familiar with running a sprint car class. Aaron seemed to have things well organized, and the whole night went real smooth. The track was a little better than I expected, what with the heat all week and the way it was the previous week. I honestly didn't expect it to be very good, but with a lot of cloud cover all day-it turned out pretty fast and racy. A series that pays bonuses for highest finishing steel block, has no spec tire, and even has all three tire manufacturers giving money TO THE RACERS, rather than the race tracks...pretty good combination. Great job Aaron.

Would have love to went but after a whirlwind Friday and facing another run the same distance run as Bloomington I wasn't up to it. It sounded like it was a success from all the reports I've heard. I hope I can make the next show.

I hope BOSS and non-wing sprint racing an continue to make inroads further into Ohio. Best of luck Aaron.

get it JG!!!! Told ya!!!

treecitytornado 7/20/11 6:44 PM

It may have been a descent show, but its going to take more than 15 cars for the series to survive. Really should have had more cars with Waynesfield and Lawrencburg not running.

It was there first race,in the middle of a wing state.Maybe that why the series you were in with failed, they expected instant 40 car fields.

hoosierhillbilly 7/20/11 7:11 PM

I was expecting a few more cars. However, if you look some waynesfield cars went to the mts race in michigan. A few others were running 360s at eldora. I would have really liked to have seen westfall there but it was still good. Oh, the ovsa winged 410s only had 10 cars on saturday in wv so it could have been worse.

treecitytornado 7/20/11 7:22 PM

If you are referring to ASCT, I never expected 40 car fields, so I don't know where you got that. I said from the get go after John decided to open it up we would lose anything he thought we would gain and that is exactly what happened. Look at MTS, they had a good, solid 22 car field on the same night in a Winged State, so what's your point?

Re: Justin Grant Wins BOSS opener at K-C Race

We lost 5 cars to Eldora, another car was crashed on Friday night at Wayne County, and 2 of my committed drivers had engines down for the weekend. We lost 2 of our drivers to the MTS race because it was a 2 day Michigan vs Ohio deal.

BOSS paid a higher purse and has an open tire rule. It will pay off for us in the long run. Don't forget, MTS has been around for a few years and BOSS was BRAND NEW. I think this is the first time in a LONG while a brand new deal has come about an nobody is bashing us...... and all 15 drivers left extremely happy with us.

Forgot to add.............THANK YOU to everyone posting the positive comments. My officials and myself really appreciated all the kind words Saturday night and on here. I'm working on some dates in August. I've said from the beginning, I'm after QUALITY, not quantity in my scheduling. And 2011 is a starter deal. My original announcement said the first full BOSS season would be 2012. Rome wasn't built in a day.............

My point was a group that has been around 5 years is getting 20-22 cars and you think that is great.15 cars for a new series is not bad,it's good start to build on.

FIRST MTS Race 5-5-2006
A-Main: 1. Mike Austrakas, 2. Mark Irwin, 3. Joe Irwin, 4. Kirk Chaney, 5. Joel Hummell, 6. Andy Tuenessen

FIRST Waynesfield Sprintcar Race had 4 cars....I believe Tim Clark won

FIRST B.O.S.S. Race
Feature: Grant, Smith, Moffat, Strausser, Keen, Middaugh, Soudrette, Simon, Fischesser, Slone, Welpott, Lowder, Weber, Spille, Christian

15 or 50 cars Mr. Fry had to work hard to earn the trust of these drivers and tracks.. B.O.S.S. Will be around for along time anyone that was part of the first race will agree....Aaron Fry and his staff are the real deal...

treecitytornado 7/21/11 1:18 AM

Mudpacker, I think they are trying to go under the radar as much as possible. Steve Thomas could tell you better than me though.

Based on this string I went and looked at the Top 20 in points at Waynesfield and Lawrenceburg. THe Top 20 went as follows:

LBURG
USAC: 9
BOSS: 5
LPS: 1
?: 5

Waynesfield
? 9
NRA: 6
MTS: 3
BOSS: 2

THere are lots of things you can conclude from this.

this mts date was not a mts race this was i96 speedway nonwing sprints. (MTS spawned from this). our first show at merritt speedway as MTS in 2007 had 16 or 17 cars... so boss is on the right track i think it wont be long and there will be 20+.

I wanted to thank Mr. Fry for putting this show on. We didn't have the best night finish wise, but still had a blast. Congrats to Justin and Mark.

Oh and JT where were you? I checked the BOSS site and you were a commited driver, but I didn't see you there.

tHANK YOU I FOUND IT BEFORE YOUR POST BUT THANKS MAN. i THOUGHT IT WAS WWW.BUCKEYEOUTLAWSPRINTSERIES.COM BUT I'M GOOD NOW THANK YOU..
Now next question, are their going to be any dates added yet this year? I know thats a tough one to answer , especially since its so late in the season. Try Montpelier; ask Harrold and Lori Hunter very good people. Dollar smart though so good luck. Just an idea and only about a half hr. inside Indiana from Ohio.

Re: Justin Grant Wins BOSS opener at K-C Race

Guys, I'm working on more dates. Getting our first show completed in mid July just makes it tough. We had a 2 day deal Labor Day weekend with the Hillbilly 100 for late models, but nobody seems to know where the race will be held with WVMS still not completed. I have some other tracks interested, but I am trying to stay off of high school football Friday nights (which is tough to compete with in Ohio) and I am definately staying off of Road to the Hewitt race nights.

I have about 6 tracks who are telling me they definately want to talk to me this winter about scheduling for 2012. Please be patient. Remeber the Hines 57 commercials about good things coming to those who wait............

The worst thing I can do is jump in and schedule 2 or 3 ill advised events and turn a great start into a bad one. If something good develops for BOSS in 2011, that's great, if not, I will go to work HARD on 2012.

I just saw something on Twitter saying they just reached an agreement to run the Hillbilly 100 at Portsmouth on Labor Day Weekend. Hope that helps.

Couldn't agree more Joss. It was a fun track to drive. Just wish someone would have put an anchor on Grant's car. J/k, congrats to Justin on the win, thought I was onto something for the last restart, but I was wrong. :3:. Hopefully get another chance with BOSS as the show really was ran well.
