Heavy Track or Slick Track? What do you like?

Personally, I prefer it to be right in the middle between heavy and slick. You know, just a little bit of rubber down, but not black all over the place. I like 'em when they're fast and they're backing them in real hard. But when it's too heavy, it's too fast and no one can pass. I'm very curious to see what drivers have to say. If I remember correctly, Mr. Hewitt loved a heavy track. Hopefully, this doesn't start WWIII. :6:

I wouldnt say theres NO passing on a black slick track...

Ive seen no passing on a heavy, hammer down, tack-fest before.

Ive also seen great races on both types of surfaces.

that is because Jack had to have a big cushun to hold him on the track , At bloomington he would run the rim for 10 or so laps leading the race and slip over the top , and out of the lead to the tail , but give him 5 laps and he was fighting for the lead again. I like to set up for a black slick track my self. Then its up to the driver to be smooth.:6::22: Tacky tracks , its everyone is a little more even, setup does not come in to play as much and the average driver can run with the better drivers. When it slicks out then you see who is set and who can drive.:22:

I have seen great races at both and some real stinkers at both as well. Give me side by side racing and it really doesn't matter to me.:6: A convoy doesn't interest me very much though.:7:

That is why dirt track racing is so much fun. The track is different every single night and it is up to the drivers to figure it out and adjust accordingly.:31:

Like you guys, I've seen great races on both ends of the spectrum. I do prefer the heavy tracks as long there is the ability to pass. I guess because the cars are going a lot faster. Sometimes on a slick track it seems like the driver could get out and run faster through the turns.

I like the tracks that get left alone all night. That way it is usually heavy early and slicks off by feature time. Everyone gets what they want at some point in the night. When the track gets worked before the feature it just kills the passing for about 15 laps or more.

Off to B'ton. Which is a track as described above.

Heavy, like how Slammin' Sam, got his nickname hittin' the cushion. I've heard people call it a curb also! :3:

A curb? lol There's a lot of truth to that when the cushion is especially tall. I've never had the privelidge of getting to drive a car, but I've seen plenty of people slam into a tall cushion and it doesn't look fun at all. Although, on second thought, you're in a racecar. So it's all fun right? At least as long as you're not on your lid or breaking rear ends anyway. :2:

Actually I've come to really dislike the super slick quarter huggy pole racing. However a bigger banked slicky isn't to bad if it isn't to dusty.

Also its not much fun watching twenty guys do qualifying laps for 30 laps with no passing on a super tacky one groove. Racing? In name only.

However Ive seen surprises on both types and its what makes racing great. Expecially if one driver/team figures out something the others didn't and makes a run.

Two of the races I seen last year were slickies and both times the winner fell way back before winning. These were Brownstown sprint week and Fall PVille USAC. Exciting and unexpected aren't the words. UNREAL is more like it!

Two or more grooves all night is hard to achieve, But when it happens. Now thats racin. Say what you will about bloomington but when two or more cars battle side by side for muliple laps. One precision bottom driving and the other balls out biking on the cushion.

PRICELESS and don't stop going till you see it! Once in ten races is worth every penny.

I prefer a heavier track. Dry slick usually equals a dust bowl. I hate the dust and it will drive away the casual fan every time.

I guess I prefer a "sorta" dry/slick. it's what I grew up on, so it develops better throttle control, IMHO, and we didn't know you couldn't pass, but we did know you don't wait till the final 5 laps to make a move, ya gotta commit early, those video's from Ventura are good examples, those guys let er all hang out, and you got bottom feeders, and cushion cats, and those remind me of Twin Cities, the camera angle, makes it look like it has a high bank, but it's flatter than flat, prepped properly, hardly any dust. If you're gonna run dirt, in Indiana, you better learn to run dry/slick! Sometimes wish I could go back to those days, but not likely! Bob!:)

I always thought Sammy got his name from slammin in to other cars :16

Heavy track for non-winged - slick track for winged.

So, heavy.

dry slicks are for wheel spinning sissies

treecitytornado 7/2/11 9:24 PM

The perfect track is slick in the middle with a cushion on top and some moisture downstairs to get a hold of too. This kind of track produces the best racing. As far as my personal favorite to watch or race on is a heavy track because it's just plain fun to stand on the gas!

Not a fan of the slicked off tracks unless there are two grooves. How about slick in the turns and heavy in the straights? :10:

A tacky and heavy track is good. As the night goes on let the
midgets-sprints-champ dirt cars move the cushion up. Bringing
the push trucks to roll in cushion to the fence is not good. Angell
Park-Kokomo-Haubstadt are some of the best prepared tracks I've seen.
Best Regards,

I like watching on a heavy track. I did most my winning on a rubbered up slick track, mainly because I got out balled by maniacs when the track was heavy, but I seem to have a better feel of the track then most, which is important on a slick track. Of course ths is on two wheels, not sure how relevent it is here. Opps theres that relevent word again, lol.

heavy

cmiracingvids 7/9/12 8:33 PM

Saw one of the best races I've seen at the 2002 Knoxville Nationals. It was I think Thursdays prelim a main. The track was heavy for about one car width on the bottom...and slicked up to the top. But the cushion wasnt up on the wall...there was room to put all 4 tires over the cush. So it was kinda heavy, but kinda slick. Middle never took rubber...just slide job after slide job. That's the best track!

1984 Hulman Classic....slick on the bottom,heavy/rough through the middle and a nice cushion way up high! One track, three separate conditions, three grooves, three different set-ups and three different driving styles all in the same day! Throw in Steve Kinser to battle the USAC heavy hitters that included John Andretti and you have a hell of a show! And believe it or not but there was minimal dust. I have our home video of this, if interested PM me.
