IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship!!!

https://www.indianaopenwheel.com/IOWDC.php

--------------------------------------- Added June 6,2011---------------------------------------
Ok... Here we go. I don't know how much we can collect but we'll go ahead and do this thing. I guess paying these guys something is better than nothing at all.

Once the numbers start rolling in I'll have a better idea of what we can pay and how many positions.

I will use Paypal to process all donations. They charge a small fee to process the money. Other than that, 100% of the money collected will go towards the point fund. No administrative fees other than Paypal.

I will not accept personal checks. I will accept company checks.

Minimum donation amount is $20. Other amounts are available just select the amount in the dropdown box.

The page is all setup to start donating... https://www.indianaopenwheel.com/IOWDC.php#pay

Now, I'm sure I haven't covered everything, so if you have questions let me know.

Thank You!
--------------------------------------- Added June 6,2011---------------------------------------

I had an idea of creating an IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship, so I thought I put this out there for discussion.

We use the entire "Indiana" sprint car schedule. This would include every track running a weekly sprint car program along with any USAC, KISS, MSCS or whoever races nonwing sprints in the state of Indiana.

For this demostration, I've taken the Top 5 finishers at every feature race and used the following point system.

1st = 12
2nd = 10
3rd = 8
4th = 7
5th= 6

Right now, the Top 30 in points looks like this...
Rank Driver Points Pts Behind Wins Top 5
1 Dave Darland 104 0 3 11
2 Chris Windom 101 -3 4 10
3 Brady Short 99 -5 6 9
4 Jon Stanbrough 93 -11 0 11
5 Brett Burdette 68 -36 3 7
6 Coleman Gulick 56 -48 1 7
7 Shane Cottle 51 -53 1 6
8 Casey Shuman 47 -57 2 5
9 Braylon Fitzpatrick 46 -58 2 5
10 Bryan Clauson 42 -62 0 5
11 Jon Sciscoe 42 -62 1 5
12 Casey Riggs 38 -66 1 4
13 Blake Fitzpatrick 38 -66 0 4
14 Kent Christian 36 -68 0 5
15 Billy Puterbaugh Jr 33 -71 1 4
16 Chad Boespflug 32 -72 2 3
17 Shane Hollingsworth 32 -72 1 4
18 Ethan Barrow 31 -73 0 4
19 Levi Jones 30 -74 0 4
20 Andrew Elson 26 -78 0 4
21 Kevin Thomas Jr 25 -79 0 4
22 Tracy Hines 25 -79 1 3
23 Justin Grant 24 -80 0 3
24 Hunter Schuerenberg 24 -80 2 2
25 Seth Parker 23 -81 0 3
26 Ty Deckard 23 -81 0 3
27 Thomas Meseraull 22 -82 0 3
28 Critter Malone 22 -82 0 3
29 Jerry Coons Jr 20 -84 1 2
30 Chase Stockon 19 -85 1 2

I'm curious if there would be interest in the IOW "family" contributing to a point fund and then award that money to the top 10 drivers. I'm thinking around the same time the IOW awards are presented at the Indy Circle Track Expo that Craig Dori does each year.

This is only an example... If we had 300 members contribute $20 that would equal $6,000 with a payout that could look like this.

1 $1,400
2 $1,000
3 $750
4 $600
5 $500
6 $450
7 $400
8 $350
9 $300
10 $250

Now, what I want to know is what do you think about it.
Please weigh the pros and cons.

My intitial thoughts are this could be a great thing. If money is involved then we obviously need someone who is trustworthy to manage the money. We also would need a couple people who are experienced with Excel to make sure the data in the spreadsheet I've created is accurate and that the same person wasn't being scored under two different names, among other things.

I'm aware there are alot of variables involved here. I'm just interested to see what everyone thinks.

Please don't use the quote...;) it was long enough to type. :3:

I am willing to do this... the only issue is that my health may play a factor. That is why additional people must be involved.

Sounds like a great idea.:6: Count RacinBabe and I in and let us know where to send the money.

Just a thought... but another possibility is to have business sponsorship.

Re: IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship??

20 to reward effort? Count me in.

Should number of races and level of competition come into play here? I mean someone who runs the same track 15 times and gets 6 wins, five top fives and 4 top tens against 20-25 others is easier to achieve than someone driving multiple tracks at times against 30-40 others.

Your algorithm you came up with though looks pretty damn good as far as how guys are doing. I thought for sure Windom would be top.

Or perhaps just like half a point for number of races ran?

Re: IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship??

I like the idea and would be interested depending on the final outcome of the idea.

I am data analyst by profession so I build databases and other data tracking systems all the time. I’d be glad to build something that would take very little user interface to house and track all the data. So if I can help with that part let me know. I could build it so it does all the calculations and the front end data entry is just point click (with the use of tables, queries, reports…etc…that would eliminate the “double points” because of different names). Let me know if you want me to put something together. I don’t mind being the (or one of) data person since that’s what I do. Once it’s built, the maintenance would be every minimal. Send me a PM if so.

Re: IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship??

Kevin, I'm using a spreadsheet to do this... It's setup for a 154 races and can easily be increased. All that needs to be done is input the top 5 finsihers from the various races. The main problem I found is that not all the tracks use the same names. There is always misspellings... I found that the tracks using Speednetdirect are the most accurate and consistent.

I got several hours in creating this... I really have nothing better to do.:3:

Re: IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship??

I love it! Count me in. There used to be different forms of this in the 70's.

Bill Gardner 6/20/11 4:06 PM

Re: IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship??

Chuck, this doesn't award points based on the amount of races. It awards point only to top 5 finishers. A driver can compete in 154 races but if they don't finish in the top 5 they will not receive any points.

As for rating competition... without using a bunch of formulas... that would be hard to do. I will go ahead and say it, a Paragon weekly show doesn't have the same caliber of drivers that you will find at a USAC show. However, most guys running Paragon only race there, while the guys running USAC race many other places.

If someone wants to put together a list of 2010 top 5 finishers, I will gladly input that data to see how it works out.

Re: IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship??

I like the idea and will be happy to contribute. One thing to consider would be to make winning worth a little more; at least 13, maybe 15.

I had thought about this kind of thing in the past. I'd like to add bonus points for beating to drivers; i.e., extra points for finishing ahead of drivers who are ahead of you in the table? And, dropping points if you finish behind? Of course (the reason I've never done it), it gets complicated. :)

Bill Gardner 6/20/11 4:17 PM

Re: IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship??

Yeah... we can make this very complicated.

Awarding 13pts to winner... everything else remains the same.
Rank Driver Points Behind Wins Top 5
1 Dave Darland 107 0 3 11
2 Brady Short 105 -2 6 9
3 Chris Windom 105 -2 4 10
4 Jon Stanbrough 93 -14 0 11
5 Brett Burdette 71 -36 3 7
6 Coleman Gulick 57 -50 1 7
7 Shane Cottle 52 -55 1 6
8 Casey Shuman 49 -58 2 5
9 Braylon Fitzpatrick 48 -59 2 5
10 Jon Sciscoe 43 -64 1 5

Awarding 15pts to winner... everything else remains the same.
Rank Driver Points Behind Wins Top 5
1 Brady Short 117 0 6 9
2 Dave Darland 113 -4 3 11
3 Chris Windom 113 -4 4 10
4 Jon Stanbrough 93 -24 0 11
5 Brett Burdette 77 -40 3 7
6 Coleman Gulick 59 -58 1 7
7 Shane Cottle 54 -63 1 6
8 Casey Shuman 53 -64 2 5
9 Braylon Fitzpatrick 52 -65 2 5
10 Jon Sciscoe 45 -72 1 5

We want drivers to race at our tracks... so giving the guy who wins more allows someone to race less and still be rewarded. I hope you understand what I mean.

Cool Bill, sounds like you have the data part covered. Was just throwing out my services if needed. Let me know if you ever need any help on that end. I like your points system. As you said, you can make it very complicated, but I don't see a need. As you said, some shows won't have the same caliber of drivers, but in most of those cases, those drivers only run that track. So the cream will rise which is the point. I also think USAC races should count because most of the guys run local stuff too. There aren't enough races for a "USAC only" driver to win. You would have to run other sanctions and local shows to have enough points so it's fair to me.

I'm still in for whatever the final program shapes up to be. :23:

Re: IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship??

It's a great idea, IMO. Maybe sponsor money, added to what we come up with here, would make it easier to reach a number that would make a nice little points fund. Like the one you proposed. Stick by your guns, on the points system you designed, though. Everybody always has a better idea, after somebody already comes up with something. Like they say, "A camel is a horse that was designed by committee."

What a great idea Bill, driver needs to be in personll! I think that to collect the money that the driver needs to be in person for the cash. That way the fans can see, meet and talk with them and like the many banquets and awards would really mean something as the drivers is their in person.

I have seen many awards banquets where the winners didn't care enough to show up even for a trophy. That tells me they don't care about the fan club or track that has gone out of the way to make the award happen.

Lets make this happen

Re: IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship!!!

Paypal processing fees.

Payment of $20.00 has a $0.88 fee
Payment of $100.00 has a $3.20 fee

This is straight from Paypal...
Receiving money – Personal payments:

It's free to receive money from friends or family in the U.S. when they send the money from the PayPal website using only their PayPal balance or their bank account, or a combination of their PayPal balance and bank account.

If you receive a personal payment made from a debit card or credit card, the sender has the option to pay the fee or pass it on to you. If you don't want to pay the fee, you can choose not to accept the payment.

If the fee is passed to you, it is 2.9% plus $0.30 USD of the amount you receive. For example, if you are sent $100.00 USD by credit card, the fee would be $3.20 USD ($2.90 + $0.30).

Re: IOW Sprint Car Driver Championship!!!

I see it as a minor fee to use this site and get updates when I am unable to go to the tracks! Thanks Bill!
