“THE MODERN DAY COWBOY ”TO TAKE OVER THE REINS AT PUTNAMVILLE

Loveland, OH (May 3 2011,2011) -- Hoffman Racing is announcing today that Daron Clayton will drive the Hoffman Mean Green MOPAR Machine beginning with the USAC National Sprint Car event at Putnamville Indiana on May 7 2011.

“ One constant in life is change. Our race team has not performed up to our expectations for an extended period of time. Understanding that we have an obligation to our sponsors and ourselves ,the time comes when you have to make a change . All of us at Hoffman racing want to thank Jerry Coons Jr. for his contributions to the success of Hoffman Racing. Together we won the 2008 USAC National Sprint Car Championship. Jerry has also won 13 USAC National races for the Hoffman Team , more than any driver in team history. He is truly one of the good guys in our sport and it has been a pleasure to work with him. We wish Jerry, Amy and their family the best in the future and we hope that change is good for all of us, ”said Richard Hoffman , President of Hoffman Racing.

Richard Hoffman continued, “ While we are saddened by Jerry’s departure, we are excited to welcome Daron Clayton to our Team. Daron has driven for Hoffman Racing twice and won a USAC National Sprint car race for us at Gas City in 2007”. Rob Hoffman commented “ He is an exciting driver with great potential. We look forward to helping Daron achieve his goals.”

Wow, didn't see that one coming. On the nights that Jerry wasn't in the Hoffman car he did drive the Phillip's #71, maybe that will be the direction until his next big ride comes along. Best of Luck to all of them.

Wow. This is a surprise. Even worse that the season has already begun. I know it is a business but sure makes it tough to go find a quality ride at this point. Good luck to both parties. I hope they both do well.

Coon Dog is one of my favorite drivers. Lost a lot of respect for the Hoffman guys. Driver changes happen but it is rare that a class team will do it in mid season. It would have been better form to wait until the end of the season.

Pretty crappy 6 months for Jerry. Lost two great rides that he had had for years. ouch....

I've known Jerry since he drove the 1az midget in Arizona for the Whitmore's with Ron Trainor turning the wrenches. I was lucky enough to help him and his teams with some sponsorship dollars along the way. It breaks my heart to see this news. Jerry is one of the classiest most down to earth individuals I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Jerry made his mark by hard work and his great ability to take care of equipment, first driving for his father and then the many teams he has driven for through the years. He is truly one of the good guys and I hope it all turns out for the best for him Amy, Cale and the little one they have on the way.

What a messed up deal. I like both of these drivers. I don't believe a driver switch changes anything performance wise. Huffman's should just use a standard 4 or 5 bar car (ya know, like the ones that win all the races)!!!!

Re: Hoffman Racing pres release-driver change

I'm a fan of both of these drivers, but I'm still kind of shocked by this move.

I realize the results haven't shown with Hoffman Racing lately, so I agree that something needed done. However, I'm leaning towards the idea that I'd wished they would have tried different things mechanically. It appears to me that the days of the Twister-style of cars winning are becoming less and less. This goes for Chalk, F5, Twister, GRP, etc. I know a few of those companies make other styles, too. Also, I know that Hoffman Racing tried a new Maxim out last year, but I guess that didn't work out. I was hoping they would have a Maxim, Spike or DRC to tackle the 2011 season, but that wasn't the case, instead going with Chalk. I do feel that Coondog can still get it done on any given night. With all of this being said, it's easy for me to sit here and throw out my thoughts without having my money on the line. I understand that there was a lot that went into making this tough decision and I don't envy them at all.

I respect the Hoffman's, Jerry and Daron, so I wish them all the best in 2011 and beyond.

Wow.

Friday night at the Gas City show the people I was sitting with were lamenting to plight of the Hoffman car. The memory of note was MDC in the Hoffman car there at Gas City in '07. Pure MDC.

Changing the nut behind the wheel doesn't always fix everything. Coondog has a TON of respect around these parts. He'll land a deal somewhere in short order. I think the Hoffman guys will get in back on track too. I sure do hate this part of the game though...

Best of luck to everyone going forward!

Best of luck MDC. There is a lot of pretty paint where your going!!

CTtoPA 5/4/11 10:07 AM

It's gonna be a "win it or wear it" proposition. Daron has talent and is exciting to watch but he is hard on equipment.

I think this move was coming as no surprise to Jerry. At the No Way Out 40 in North Vernon Coons was driving a black sprinter that had his name on the visor of the car. We commented about a switch. It looked like the Indy Parts car with a different sponsor. These things happen and some of you guys need to understand this. This being the life of driving sprintcars. It is not etched in stone. JMO

PS., MDC is out MGC is in. Mean Green Cowboy ;):3:

Correct, that is the Phillips car that he's driven the last year or so on weekly events when the Hoffman Team wasn't there.

when clayton slams a few cars up ....dickie will kickem to the curb...car set is never off with them....its always the drivers fault not the men turning the wrenches over there....just listen to the excuses at the end of the night from them....what really comes out of that pit area is always pointed in the drivers direction ....

Does your screen name have anything to do with Mark Cassella? Just curious.

Very Cool. Was a big fan of both Billy and Mark. How long has it been since Mark ran with USAC? Seems like years.

Good luck!

Some of the comments on this thread are just, Well. Tastless and cheap shots.

Yeah, Jerrys a great guy. I too wish him all the best.

A call was made, No different than thousands of other calls by many teams over the decades. Yet we got a team that doesn't rent the ride, but gives it and a portion of the winnings based on merit and some on here do anything they can to disrespect them. Some of the most giving people (Who don't have too) that I've ever met.

I suppose some of you'd just prefer another team just pack it in and quit.

Especially from a representative of a tracks to be making comments of the sort :7:
