Bad news...

I went to the doctor yesterday. We found out my cancer is progressing again. It was our hope that after my latest surgery in January my blood levels would normalize, but that is not the case.

At this point, treatment options are very limited and there really isn't much more doctors can do. We will continue to monitor the progression, and just see where that takes us. Alternative treatments are always an option but my wife and I have been dealing with this for 17 years.... we've heard just about every suggestion, so please don't make this post about that. We're use to the ups and downs associated with having cancer.

I know there are alot of you that keep us in your thoughts and prayers so I thought I would share this news with my IOW friends.

I will enjoy some great racing this season and I encourage everyone to do the same, we just never know when it might be our last race night.

Bill, although we have never met in person, like so many others here on IOW, I feel as if we have been friends for years. It saddens all of us to hear this nasty disease is rearing its ugly head again.

The late Jim Valvano said it in his unforgettable speech at the ESPY's, "Don't give up, Don't ever give up". I hope you can find some strength in those words as well.

Keep fighting. The Power of IOW Prayer will be pushing everyday as well... Best to you and your Family.

Pete, it is ironic that you would bring up Jimmy V... His speech is one that I find myself replaying over and over. I love it!

I don't know anybody personally, that has effected the lives of more people than you have, Bill. Or anybody that is broadly held in higher regard. I believe what goes around comes around. Hopefully, the good will of all those that have benefitted from your work, will come back to you and help change the course of your situation. You have many, many others that are in your corner, fighting this fight with you.

Bill,

We just returned from our Talladega trip and I am certainly saddened by the news. As my grandson battled this dreaded disease, you were a voice of reason and inspiration. I certainly wish there was something that I could say to make this all better. I will continue to pray for your recovery and leave you with these words that the Padfield family lives by daily. Dream, Hope, Believe.

YouTube - Jimmy's 1993 ESPY Speech

Bill,

I'm a huge college basketball fan (although you can't tell that from my awful showing in your IOW board contest). I watch the Jimmy V Classic games every year and I always get goose bumps when watching the speech. That man couldn't even walk up and down the stairs unaided but when he started talking it was like he was infused with a strength, or spirit, that just took him over. His words are inspiring, whether one is fighting illness or not.

I wish you the best.

Sounds like a good time for matching tattoos, you do need a pit pass. We never stopped thinking about you and several other of our friends fighting everyday.

When I started going to the pits as a "gopher" almost 50 years ago, I soon learned that real racing people referred to a person as a "racer" when they wanted to pay a compliment. Marv's brief sentence of encouragement, which I have quoted, says it all.
See ya at the track, racer!

Re: Bad news...

Most every day I think of you, my good buddy in Iowa with his health issues and my cousin, in his own battle with the Big C. All 3 of you are younger than me. Though I know that life isn't fair, still I'm reminded most every day.

Let the record show that, no matter how many years Bill is allowed here on Earth, he is making the most of them. He lives a life that is an example for the rest of us. He shows us how to handle whatever life throws us.

I pray that God's will be done. May He bless and keep my friend and his family.
