I'm working on a column for our buddy Mr. Morrison, Doug, but can tell you that Aaron Pierce won over Ryan Litt, Jeff Bloom, Jason Cox and Jimmy McCune.

Kudoes to Jacob Wilson who started 16th and was challenging for fifth before dropping out.

Now, back to "work" for me.

I also enjoy watching the Wilson team. I am curious to know if AP had to work through traffic, or started out front. Also, wondering how many cars and what the fan count was! Wish I was there.

If memory serves me correctly, I believe that Aaron started on the outside of the second row. 24 winged sprint cars were in attendance on a bright but windy afternoon. The sunshine was certainly welcome after the difficult winter and early spring? we have had.

I talked with the mailman after the race and made the comment that with the excellent weather today, I was surprised by a lower fan turnout than I expected. Danny also thought that the headcount was rather light. I guess you could call it a decent crowd.

Them Wilsons are real nice people, always enjoy talking to them in the pits.

From Facebook:

"The Official Troy DeCaire Fan Page
Results from Salem: Qualified 9th inverted top 6. Finished 2nd in heat on last lap motor blew. Troy climbed in Koehler's 3rd car for 30-lap feature. Had to go to rear started 22nd and with NO cautions finished 6th."

Then someone posted in the comments:
"There WAS a caution on lap 3, and he started at the tail, but only 18 cars started. He did a good job to finish 6th, down 1 lap to Pierce"

There was a caution for a spin early in the feature. From that point forward it was all :23: up to the :22:

Okay, I never do this, but here goes: Today, I witnessed the absolute worst 'tire debacle' ever. Nobody was immune. I kinda feel like Jeff Bloom is lucky that his right rear didn't blow out. Pierce's wasn't a heck of a lot better in my opinion. Hopefully it's a one time problem. Sorry. Done. Sound off......

For a sunday afternoon 88 degree bright sunny day show, with the high speed of winged pavement racing on a pretty green and rough track and being the very first race on these new tires I for one thought they held up pretty good. Nobody has setups yet for these tires. Different rubber compounds and a different spring rate from these tires. Ok I'm done now.

No they weren't Goodyears but American Racing Tires (ART). I wish Sam would have elaborated more on what exactly was the problem with the tires? In an earlier post this spring, Don Wilshe one of the MSXSS car owners among others, was very high on the ART and predicted that they would be able to get a couple of shows out of the right rear. He was predicting a cost savings over other tire brands even predicting that the tire got faster with increased laps on them.

I am not trying to start anything here, but what exactly happened? It seems a number of folks on here don't like Hoosier and others have their opinions on Goodyear. Is this a one time problem or will we continue to see excessive wear and blowouts? The next show is at another high banked, rough track in Winchester on Sunday May 15th for an afternoon show.

Almost everyone had a blistering problem. Some on RR's, others on the LR's. Blooms was flat out delaminating, but only on one half of the tire. The degree of blistering(if any-surely there were some that didn't have any) varied from car to car. I can't remember that many teams having problems at one 30 lap event. That was all that I meant. As I already stated, hopefully it's a one time problem. Probably pretty difficult for any manufacturer to achieve perfection 1st time out. Perhaps the word 'debacle' that I had used previously was a little over the top, and for that, I aplogize.

If I can't go to Winchester on the 15th, maybe somebody can post the compounds on here for me. But then again, even if compounds are unchanged, the construction of the tires could be different. Salem compounds were M130 left rear and 132 right rear.

Update: Geoff Kaiser raises some good points. And Ryan Litt and Dave Baumgartner also do on my facebook page. I had expectations that were unrealistic regardless of what I was hearing and what I saw from Blonde @ Bristol. All of these men have way, way more knowledge than I on winged pavement racing and it's effect on tires. I'll see ya at Anderson! :)

Sam,

Can you share them with us?

Re: any updates on must see sprints at salem

Dave Baumgartner: any tire has a hard time lasting at salem when u run that hard my tires were good and ran them from first hot lap session to the end of feature = 500 dollar tire bill was real nice.

Sam Brooks: Did the Hoosiers do that last year? I wasn't there, so.......

Dave Baumgartner: Yes and last year at winchester the cords were showing on both rears and rr was coming apart all I like either hoosier or american race tire as long as they are as cheap as they are now they will figure it out but I think the world of irish and all the guys at hoosier also so I also don't want to mislead anybody

Ryan Litt: aarons tire & mine were f'd ... plain and simple. whatever they said before the season started wasn't true. we prob couldnt of gone 5 more laps...

Dave Baumgartner: But remember ryan hoosiers do the same thing it is hard to get any tire to last at those two tracks and it was 88 degrees and a lot of sun so do give up yet dude let them work on it they will get better tire bills will be lower that what I am looking at

Ryan Litt: either way, we got told before the season they lasted 50 laps and up, could be run for 2 or 3 races. i blistered my LR in 2nd practice

Dave Baumgartner: Like I said weather helps a lot and that kid in blakes car is the one who did that at winchester and remember blonde set that record with tires with a boat load of laps on them camera done lie I don't want to argue about this I am happy the tire bills are cheaper I can't afford a 1000 a night tire bill that is not acceptable

Sam Brooks: All I meant on the board was that I was a little disappointed at the end result from a performance standpoint. The AR's less $$ per set regardless. And if the wear is equal, then it's a savings. I guess I was expecting too much, which is my fault. Ryan and Dave have TONS more knowledge than I on winged pavement racing. Btw, the pic is Bloom's RR.

Dave Baumgartner: Ya they will figure it out I have had a lot of bad luck with hoosiers and also good to all I know is that them tires on the top three cars were on from qualifying heat race and feature and not sure if they had any hot laps on them a hoosier would have never mad it all those laps period end of story

Re: any updates on must see sprints at salem

Thanks Sam. I appreciate hearing from both Ryan and Dave and hope that they can get this figured out. I was rather confused since Don came on here and was telling about the success story of ART. I realize that tire bills are very expensive and you guys need a break. Looking forward to Winchester.

Let's wait and see what happens at Winchester. I believe the tires will hold up better there. I hate to say this, but the racing surface at Salem is absolute junk. I am surprised their insurance company still insures them. Not only is there no grip in the 42 year old surface, it is full of pot-holes and gaping cracks. Instead of wasting time and money fooling around with their new "short track", they should have dug the high-bank track up and put down fresh asphalt. JMO.

short track scott 4/20/11 8:40 AM

You are right about the surface at Salem. And the surface is probably why they redid the infield before they repave the big track. It is phase 2 or 3 of Owen's plan.

Or would you rather they run all the heavy equipment across the new pavement?

American Racer only has to live up to what IT promises in its product. Car owners and others can claim and boast all they want, but the proof comes on race day.

Tire tests are fine and needed, but so is real life on track racing. AR got that at Salem. The tires came back looking bad but THEY CAME BACK. They didn't fail on the track (although I will NOT say they had anything left, especially LRs). LRs were tested at 15-18 psi, at Salem they were run at 10-12 psi. Is that a big difference? The results seem to say so.

Litt came from behind the inversion (6) to catch Pierce with 2 to go. His tires looked as bad as some of the others, but they were either good enough for him to move up, or he's crazy and must be stopped at the border next time.

Let's see what AR brings to Winchester. Or better yet, what they have left after Winchester.

Improvements? There's room...

The tires were great...ran them all day!!! and loved the tire bill

sprintfan74 4/21/11 11:10 AM

I wonder how much of the tire wear issue is related to the low tire pressures that were ran. It was my understanding that ART recommended nothing less than 15psi.

mccune88 do you think you can run 500 laps at anderson on one set of 'ART' tires that would be a great tire bill
