Very sad day. I remember the first time I heard him as a kid. His voice matched the size and greatness of IMS. RIP Tom

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
Some of the greatest moments of my life have been spent at the speedway for many years. Nobody will ever say "It's a new track record" like him.
|
Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
My memories of him where embeded into my memory at an early age. To me it will always be "A New Track Record"......"And Heeeee's on it" and his role in Hoosiers was a great touch. This man was ICONIC in so many ways. My dad looked up to Tom for all the great things that he did and Tom always had time for my dad's questions. A Great Great person who will be sorely missed. IMS will not be the same without hearing his voice in May.
Thoughts and Prayers to his family. |

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
:13: My first time at the speedway was qualifying the Year Arie Luyendyk set the all time fastest lap. The chills I felt hearing him announce the speed and "Its a new track record" still brings a smile to my face. He will be missed.

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
As long as I live, I will never forget the day that Tom Sneva turned the first 200 mph laps in qualifying, in 1977. Our mother grabbed a portable radio and took my two brothers and I to Deming Park for an afternoon of qualifications and sunshine. Because of the practice speeds, up to that point, you just knew it was going to be a historic day. And thanks to Tom Sneva and the God-like voice of Tom Carnegie, that day will be forever etched in my mind.

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
Nothing against today's Speedway announcers, but since I started going to the 500 in 1960, Tom Carnegie on the PA was gold to me. May the best announcer ever rest in peace.
|
Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
I've never been to the 500 itself but for practice and qualifications. Of which I seen none as I arrived late. But that voice comming over the PA at IMS was part of what made it hallowed ground. It reverberated no matter where you were in that small city sized place. Walking across the infield, On the backstretch. In the main stretch stands.
You'd hear the crack of the car as it hit the bricks followed by a brief pause. MEARS is on it! 229.232. Thank you Tom, R.I.P |

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
Some of my best memories from growing up are being at Indy on Pole Day with my family. Tom Carnegie made those days even more memorable. I can still hear his voice booming over the pa system, and it still gives me goosebumps. Indy will never be the same, he was truly one of a kind. R I P Tom Carnegie.

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
Spent several dyas in the sun and a couple in the rain...with Tom making the call. IMS had something special with Tom and we all knew it...just sad to know it's really over...Tom where ever you are I hope the track is always green, fast and someone is on it.....with a new track record....

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
Did Tom Carnegie announce the midget races at the old 16th Street Midget Speedway? My memory might be failing me but I thought he was the announcer there right after WWII. I attended the Indianapolis 500 many times and hearing his booming voice was always one of the highlights of the day. RIP Mr Carnegie and thank you for your gift you shared with all.

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
Rest in peace, for those racers in heaven they are getting a great announcer! And heees on it!!!!

For those basketball fans, he helped found the IN High School Hall of Fame and was the voice of the tournament for years. WRTV 6 in Indy had a nice tribute show tonight on him.

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
I have to say that the biggest thrill that I have experienced in my racing career was being interviewed by Tom at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway over the public address system during the very first Champions Day that they had. He was a very professional person as well as one who seemed to love all forms of Motorsports. I feel privileged to have met this racing icon.

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
Two records that will never be equaled: A. J. Foyt's 35 consecutive starts in the 500 and the number of years Tom Carnegie served as announcer at the Speedway.
RIP, Tom |
Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
When I started announcing I wanted to sound just like Tom Carnegie. One day I realized there was no way to really do that because Tom was just being himself. The way he spoke in short bursts. He made every word count. And his inflections on his tones are unmatched.
In an interview one time he said that doing public address at the Speedway is almost like theatre. The performers are acting it all out in front of the crowd, the announcer only need to fill in the gaps and relate the details. I will be at the Speedway in May. Now as much to remember Tom Carnegie as to celebrate the Speedway's 100th anniversary itself. Thanks for the memories. Rest In Peace, and Godspeed. |
Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
Rest in Peace Tom.You are already missed.

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
There should not be any "new track record" but if there is they should play his voice... Only he can announce it. RIP

Re: Tom Carnegie. Rest in Peace.
He was what made the 500 a spectacle. RIP, Mr. Carnegie. :22:

Words of Advice I wish many Announcers would take into account, Many think they are the show or Professional DJ's. Oh Vey! |
Tom has one of those voices you never forget! He is one of those that was professional and didn't undersell or oversell it. Terry Baltus, former Eldora announcer, would also fall into this elite category. RIP Tom
