Driving to see a Race?
I'm not talking about drivers or owners or mechanics or officials. I'm not talking about flying. How far have you driven to watch a race? How many states have you driven to and seen a race in? I've driven from my Cincinnati home to see races in:
Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Connecticut, Pennsylvania. This question is inspired by Al Consoli's response on another thread. |
Re: Driving to see a Race?
I have driven to Florida. I guess that's farther than IL. The difference with me is that I kicked the habit when I got married, and am no longer addicted.:O: Went "cold turkey" for a long time..... Now I need the rest.:D

Driven to K'Ville once by myself for the Nats., Eldora a few times solo, with my dad or a friend, Chili Bowl, Bloomington, Haubstadt and Terre Haute several times. Been to Attica for a couple of Brad Doty Classics as well.
Furthest so far this year was the Bowl. Other than that maybe a trip to Gas or Larryburg. Prolly no trips to Eldora and K'Ville. |
Re: Driving to see a Race?
Fla to the Chile Bowl a few times, many trips from Fla to the K-ville Nationals that included side trips to Topeka, I-80 Kansus, and a lot of races in between. See y'all at Indiana Speed Week this year. I hope the gas prices don't get any worse or I'll have to take a second out on the house!

Where do you want me to start???
I used to live in Maine and drove all over the place and back to watch sprint car racing. Even have driven to Dick Monahan's house so he could take me to Logan Airport to fly to Australia for sprint car racing. Not afraid to travel, as long as the wallet agrees with me. |

Indiana(Terre Haute-Sumar Classic) Illinois(Tri-City-USAC sprints) Iowa(Osky, then Kville Nats) Indiana(Kokomo) |

Does hitchhiking Count ?
I once jumped off a train somewhere in Georgia and hitched my way to the Sebring 12hr race in Fla. Then I hitched my way all the way back to Dothan ,Alabama all in a weekend. Young and stupid. Ya gotta love it ! :thumb |
Re: Driving to see a Race?
I live in North Carolina. I've driven to the following states for races:
Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida. Between work and racing, I usually drive 60-70,000 miles per year. I've already been to Florida twice this year and I'm planning on hitting Attica/Eldora in two weeks. Also, planning my first trip to Missouri this year (Benton). States that I still want to get to see a race at: Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arkansas, Mississippi, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Minnesota. |
Re: Driving to see a Race?
Ran a mini sprint on Manzy's 1/3 mile on a tuesday night. (Phoenix).Towed it to Maine on Wednesday and Thursday. Ran it again in Springfield, Massachusetts on Saturday night....does that count? I still think I should have gotten tow money.

Re: Driving to see a Race?
Driving to races: the farthest was to Manzy. Have drove to Pa., New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Tennesee, North Carolina, and Iowa. I really do not consider Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, being I frequent these states quite often.
As for the places I have been to races: New York, PA, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennesee, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Arizona, and California. ( The one and only Ascot). |
Re: Driving to see a Race?
Terre Haute To The Chili Bowl For 12 Year-13 Years.
Terre Haute To Fla. ( Eastbay ) 2 Times |
Re: Driving to see a Race?
The farthest I ever drove I guess would be either from Indiana to Alabama or South Carolina. The number of states that I have seen a race would be 13. Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama. Also have seen racing in Canada. Gosh, I still have a lot of states to hit yet!:( I better get going. Is it spring yet?:O:

Re: Driving to see a Race?
I drive 600 miles to Indiana 2 or 3 times a year and once I drove 700 miles to TriState? (By the MS arch?) But it was rained out! I still had fun though. We went to the fair instead!
I would drive a million miles to see Dave Darland race!! (If only I didn't have a job, and gas wasn't so expensive!!) LOL!! |
Re: Driving to see a Race?
Well, one can drive through a lot of states back there. Seat time 8 to10 hours one way. Only for a 2 day show. I turned down a CRA tour may be 89 sleeping in the sprint car trailer at night. Kind of wish I did it! Longest rain out fly Cal to Ohio drive to the Grove then back to Oil City North West Pen. Back home to Cal. Oil City rain out.:applaud:

Re: Driving to see a Race?
I drove over the road and hauled Eckrich meats in the 80s.
I had a 30 foot hot dog painted on the side of my trailer. They called us Wienee haulers? I know Aero is going to love that one Drove Coast to coast and seen many race tracks and races. Echrich would give me extra boxes of meat to give out for promotion. Every time I went to a track i gave out cases of Hot dogs. Got to know many drivers, fans and promotors at those tracks. The neat thing about it Got paid for driving to the tracks. Some of you might remember seeing the truck parked at Eldora. Use to go to the races on Sat night at Eldora than had to haul A$$ to Texas for a Monday morn drop off. Mark Fritz |
Re: Driving to see a Race?
I'll be driving alone making the trip to Eldora next week from Seattle, Washington. By far my longest drive. (But I'm also moving to Indy to live, so it may not exactly count but I did make it a point to get to that race.)
Let's Kick thier Flippin @$$'s Lester!!!! "Grip it and Rip it, just don't Flip it!":thumb Tbird |

Furthest trips from Milwaukee (actually West Allis) are probably Star Speedway (NH), Flemington NJ, Lincoln Speedway PA, Talladega AL and Tulsa. I counted up 16 states (WI, IL, IN, OH, MI, PA, NJ, KY, MO, KS, OK, NE, IA, SD, AL, TN and NH) that I have driven to races and 3 more where I wimped out and flew (CA,AZ, NV).
