With or Without a wing...which is faster
The reason I bring this up is I had a conversation with a racer that his excuse for not racing my series was the non wing is faster then the wing cars (mini sprint). I kinda laugh and told this gentleman there was no way on god's green earth the winged cars are slower. He said, "I beg to differ, we had our car out on the road and a sheriff clocked it with and without the wing and it was faster without." Are you serious? :10:
I suppose that could be true but do we drag raced and not race in a circle? I could not make this person understand with a wing the corner speed is much faster thus the straightaway speed is greater.... I guess the saying...."You can lead a horse to water but you sure as hell can not make him drink".....is true :15: Just wanted to give my fellow non wing fans a laugh today!!! :5: |
Re: With or Without a wing...which is faster
A winged Sprintcar is normally about 2 seconds fatser than a non-wing car... but it is possible that with and under powered car that already has little to no tire spin the wing could slow it down depending on the race track but i doubt it...

Re: With or Without a wing...which is faster
The wing causes a ton of drag. if traction isn't an issue the non wing car will have a faster top speed but the corner speeds of a wing car allow it 2 have faster lap times. Down a half mile or longer stretch of pavement the car without a wing will top end better.

Re: With or Without a wing...which is faster
From the times I recieve from the transponders the wing cars are faster. we have cars that run both classes and i have seen a pick up of over a second on the same car with a wing.:22:

Re: With or Without a wing...which is faster
At the Knoxville USAC race in August, the winged 305 sprints ran the same night. They were 10 mph faster than the 410 non wingers but.............
The non wingers put on a MUCH better show! :8: |
Re: With or Without a wing...which is faster
I agree, non wings usually put on a much better show on the dirt than the wings do on dirt. On pavement, I kinda like the wings.

The Joe James/Pat Oconnor show at Salem paired USAC and Must See Racing on the same track, same night. In qualifying the wing fast time was a little more than a second faster than the non wing car. The wing car was faster in the corner, but the non wing car was quicker from the flagstand to its shut off point, which was a bit earlier than the wing car for obvious reasons.
At any speedway there are a variety of factors that will determine the benefit of a wing. To use a minisprint with its low power to weight ratio compared to a 410 sprint car in a drag racing or absolute speed contest, the non wing car should be faster, unless the wing is trimmed to reduce the downforce it is used for. That is the case until the general shape of the car itself begins producing lift, something that will happen at speed much higher than you should ever propel a mini sprint. This is what the Sprint and Silver Crown cars battled at places like Gateway years ago, and "necessitated" the next generation Silver Crown cars. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: With or Without a wing...which is faster
Quite a while ago, Open Wheel magazine did a test at Thompson with a supermodified that ran both with and without the wing. Thompson is a high-banked 5/8 mile, and one of the fastest places the supers race.
Without the wing, the car was slightly faster at the end of the straights, but was much slower in the middle of the corners. Overall lap times were much faster with the wing. |

In my opinion you see closer racing with the 360 non wing sprints then ALL of sprint racing total...I do believe this is the future of sprint car racing....that is just this ole farts opinion |
Re: With or Without a wing...which is faster
I believe if you look at the fastest Sprint Car records they are with non-wing cars. Dave Steele at Phoenix for one lap and Andy Michner with fastest Sprint Car race. 136 MPH average

Re: With or Without a wing...which is faster
I know Billy Pauch had the world record in a winged sprint car at 144 MPH at the Syracuse Mile and a couple years ago, I believe Sammy Swindell broke that with a lap 146?? MPH at I believe Bristol when they put dirt down or it could have been at Charlotte...

sammy broke the record at the springfield mile.

Re: With or Without a wing...which is faster
Is the non wing car faster at the end of the straight because it is going through the power band down the straight instead of a more sustained high RPM? I know a Silver Crown car has a flywheel for the starter clutch, so it retains some more momentum when the driver lets off the throttle.

with out with out a doubt :5:

Re: With or Without a wing...which is faster
Seriously? Are we really having this conversation?
Rod Keplinger:20: |
Faster lap times with a wing, faster straights non wing, better drivers are made without... Rumor has it MMSA winged warriors will be losing there wings for 20-30% of the schedule... Should be a blast!
