If you look at the bottom of the Schedule you will find this.

FEB 17th – OPEN PRACTICE 6-9PM

FEB 18th – 5th Annual "Copper on Dirt"

FEB 19th – 5th Annual "Copper on Dirt"

I would say 5th Annual would = 2011

While I havent been to Ocala since they went back to dirt I used to go on a weekly basis when it was dirt and then pavement back in the 90's, Sprints are always fun to watch at this track and turn 4 is very tricky to get though. Best place to sit is in turn 4 at this track.

I'm going to Ocala tomorrow night. I'll try and find out what's going on and when.

I was there in Feb 2008 for the All-Star show there. They had gotten a lot of rain the night before, so for the first night, the track was very heavy and fast. The second night was a lot better. The track dried out a bit but not bad and the racing was much better. The track does have a lot of sand in it, but it wasnt that bad. Some people call it a sh*t hole but I have seen FAR MORE worse than Ocala. Just my opinion. Turns 1 and 2 are pretty normal sweeping turns but as soon as you get out of turn 2, the backstretch goes at an angle as if you were heading toward the middle of 3 and 4 on most tracks. Then turns 3 and 4 is VERY sharp. I think it is going to make for a really interesting race as both turns are so different. I guess we will see!

It may be a shiz hole of a track but at least they are willing to give this event a go, more than I can say for that money grubbin Eastbay. Oh, and Superduke, does it at least have more dirt on it than that track you promoted in Missouri a few years back?

1st of I would like to thank Mike Peters :8: and his wife for bring the "BEST KIND OF RACING PERIOD" back to Florida. I have raced Ocala since the early 70's and have seen the different track surfaces. From clay to gumbo to pavement to to the surface now that is a gumbo, limerock, sandy mix. The one thing that has been constant is the track layout, as sprinthead pointed out it's turns 1 and two are sweeping and 3-4 are tight. T-Mac said it best a few years back after the allstar race, "this'll be a hell'va joint to have a non wing show at". The "crutched styled" Top Gun Series has had some good shows they and the AllStar show was not to bad last year. Ocala has the BEST DAMN LIGHTING system then ANY track in the state, and prehaps the best seating area as well being it is stadium seating. But best of all MIKE PETERS and OCALA SPEEDWAY are bring NON WINGED SPRINT CARS TO FLORIDA!!!!!!!!:9:!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again Mike!!:6:

I was hoping so too. For a first time event held during the middle of the week on one pretty darn cold night, I thought the crowds were pretty good. Guess they just don't like our kind down there. See ya at Toledo.

I don't think it is that, it's about the all mighty dollar...As you can see NO 410's this year...only 360's with less money to pay out...They only pay 400 to win and 50 to start with their reg Limited sprints..Yea yea I know they are limited by motor only and the tracks ALL over the nation want to pay less because of the name even though they are 360 limiteds the chassis are the same as WoO/Allstars, cost the same for fuel and the ticket to get in...oh well I'm rambling, just so glad to see NON Wing back to Florida for the 2nd time in 25 years...Booked my motel today..Super 8 for $48.00 a night

Benji Lyons, co-promoter at USA Raceway, told me by e-mail that he knew nothing of USAC's plans to race in Florida on those dates until he read the news release. He's miffed, saying no one from USAC had called or given him a heads-up. "So to answer the question, the Copper on Dirt will not be a USAC-santioned race, but we are exploring other options," he said in the e-mail.

Hope this information helps those contemplating travel plans.

So instead of looking for another date, he's just ditching usac? Way to support the 70 plus teams who had nothing but good things to say about you after last year Benji.

I doubt that you will see the 410s @ Perris go anywhere. For someone who is so far away from California - what do you know? Especially about ASCS - who had scheduled three shows at Perris and were forced to cancel the last one due to a lack of interest.

Was not the reason the last race was canceled, Bob. That was only a tentative date on our schedule as they had the same date at another track, but there was some kind of problem with it. If things did not work out and they did not have anywhere to run that weekend, we would have brought them back.

I am sure USAC is looking to have more cars running all their races, more people running for points. A trip to Florida and then to turn around and tow all the way out to Arizona is not a good way to start the season. That is a lot of travel and not only requires a lot of time off for people who do other things than just race, but also a lot of money in travel. It would make much more sense to have a race out at Tuscon when teams are already out there for the Oval Nationals, and it may draw more cars due to the fact that you could tow all the way out there and run more than just 2 pre lims and a final at Perris and 1 race at Tulare.

But looks like they are going to make the guys tow out to run Chico in September and then come back in November. Makes no sense to me. I say the USAC/CRA boys tow out east for Sprintweek!
