10/9 USAC SC "Sumar Classic" - Terre Haute
Never seen a silver crown race here. How many cars should be there?

Re: That 10/9
Looking like mid- to high-20s with a possibility of reaching thirty. Hoping the Silver Crown guys show up in force, as this one is important for the series and for any future make-up dates for big races, and, in particular, Silver Crown events...

Hey, 29 cars not bad!
Sure would be nice to see that number climb into the mid 30's Curiously, wonder what the car count was... say... in the late 70's and early 80's? ---------- Post added at 04:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:45 PM ---------- Quote:

The books shows results for 20 starters. Without going back to NSSN, I would guess that might be the total number there, because they list 19 & 22 for the two races in Tulsa, 22 for Williams Grove, 23 & 27 for DuQuoin, 28 for Springfield and 29 for the Indy mile. Given those different numbers, my guess would be that they let everyone run. |
Re: 10/9 USAC SC "Sumar Classic" - Terre Haut
Everyone should go to the 500 Museum of Wheels that will be open from 9-12 on Saturday if you are coming in town for the race. A bunch of race cars and pace cars there.

Gary Bettenhausen was the winner. |

With 29 cars 7 of them might not make the show.

Re: 10/9 USAC SC "Sumar Classic" - Terre Haut
Terre Haute is the best track to watch the big cars in my opinion. Still debating on coming up but just hope the car count is good.

Re: 10/9 USAC SC "Sumar Classic" - Terre Haut
Best place to watch the Champ Cars there is. Big enough to race really great, but not so big that you can run off and hide like the miles. Also you actually see a real cushion. Defiantely worth going to and the weather should be perfect.
Here are a couple of shots from 2008. Darland and Jones in the 2 car shot. Jesse Hockett qualifying in the single car shot. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4132/...bafe987587.jpg084 by uncloose1, on Flickr http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4110/...042e51fe01.jpg236 by uncloose1, on Flickr |
Re: 10/9 USAC SC "Sumar Classic" - Terre Haut
I agree, THAT is the best place for SC cars. The miles are historic and I like them, but there isn’t going to be side by side racing lap after lap. Eldora can be good or bad, track wasn’t that good a couple weeks ago. I think THAT is the best and I’m sure it will be prepared well.
Darland and Coons had a great battle in the '08 race. I remember DD's right rear almost hitting the end of the turn 4 wall the last 20 laps….could have been more. The cushion was that high and he had to hit the mark perfectly each lap to keep Coons behind him. It was a great race. That’s where I’m heading Saturday. As was brought up, I hope a good crowd shows up. People *****, piss, and moan when a race is rained out and not made up. Here is your chance. Weather looks good so show up if you can. :23: |

Once again I am not looking anything up, just usung my lousy memory. |
Just a heads up to anyone coming. Saturday is Indians States homecoming. If you need a hotel room, your probably out of luck. At least from what I've been told. Traffic may be a little worse and restaurants a little more crowded so give yourself plenty of time.

Some of my earliest memories, I can remember a few Sammy Sessions Memorials at Winchester around that time of year that were brutal, on the rare occasion that they did run. |
Re: 10/9 USAC SC "Sumar Classic" - Terre Haut
We've seen several really great Silver Crown races at Terre Haute over the years. A lot of times someone will set up for the very bottom and someone else will run the cushion and they have run side by side lap after lap for the lead. I remember Tony Stewart gettin' her sidways under the flagstand in Ziggy's and A.J.'s beautiful black Champ Car. I also never leave Terre Haute without first recalling fond memories of Larry Rice. I really hope to be able to make the 3.5 hour (one way) drive over to The Action Track for this one.

Edited the driver's list. You are right about ticket prices. You can buy & pick them up now at the USAC office.
Just a note: The race is only scheduled to have 26 starters, but a Consy will be run regardless, at least for starting position for the race. It looks like we'll have over 26, but likely everyone will be allowed to start the 100-Lap race... |

Will they put out the red at lap 50 for a fuel stop?

Re: 10/9 USAC SC "Sumar Classic" - Terre Haut
Time Trials. Consolation Race (15 Laps). 100-Lap Sumar Classic. No pre-determined red flag at halfway. Yellow flag laps count up to Lap 70, I believe.

Re: 10/9 USAC SC "Sumar Classic" - Terre Haut
If I buy a $20 grandstand seat, I can still go in the infield to grill and watch hotlaps etc. right?
Then go to the stands to watch the feature |

huge race in the scheme of the overall USAC champion deal...
Weather looks perfect for 100 laps with all the big dogs at the historic half mile! |
Re: 10/9 USAC SC "Sumar Classic" - Terre Haut
Hope everyone is ready for a great race. Will start heading up that way around noon. Could get cool tonight so I will be ready for that too.

Re: 10/9 USAC SC "Sumar Classic" - Terre Haut
For several reasons, like the shape this track has been lately, the number of cars entered and the names on that list, I'm really looking forward to seeing the big cars duking it out for 100 laps, on the historic half mile. More than I have for his race, in quite a few years.
