The Springfield Weekend Coming Up!

Powri midgets at a great little midget track in Macon, Il. on Friday night...

Then the USAC Silver Crown cars on the dirt mile in Springfield during the Illinois State Fair.

Can't beat it!

Re: The Springfield Weekend Coming Up!

Yep, at this moment we're loadin' up the camper and headin' for the State Fair tomorrow. We haven't missed State Fair racing weekend in a very long time. Lookin' forward to going over to Mighty Macon for the POWERi show, too. Got our reservations for the Fairgrounds Campground, race tickets and plenty of food and beverage packed away. Gonna' do some white bass fishin' (among other things) on Lake Springfield as well. Oh yea, I look forward to this week all year.

On a different note, a very close friend of our family was 86 years old on August 4th and he hasn't missed a Champ Car race during the State Fair at Springfield since 1946. There have been a couple that were cancelled and a few that were rescheduled at a later date due to weather, I believe, but he's been in the grandstand for every one that they've run. If my math is correct this will be 65 years running.

Here's to hopin' all who make the trip to The Hallowed Ground of the Springfield Mile enjoy it as much as we always do!!

This is always a must attend event. I look forward to it every year.
There is nothing better than watching Silver Crown Cars on a sunny afternoon with a fair in the background. I also get in my yearly "Whack A Mole" fix.

Any surprise entries?

Can you find a good breaded tenderloin at the Illinois State Fairground?

We'll be makin' the trip to Du Quoin. It's over twice as far as Springfield but worth it. Gonna' drag the camper down there, too. Leavin' for DQ Tuesday the 31st of August. Campin' out in the non-hookup area away from it all and gonna' try our hand at catchin' some catfish over at Rend Lake in addition to the fair and the SC and ARCA racin'.

Du Quoin is kinda' bittersweet 'cause it is usually the last trip of the summer before harvest. I kinda' get depressed knowin' we got all that crappy weather to suffer through before we can start all over next May.

Don't forget. If you have a open wheel vintage racer. Call JACK BALL at 765-649-2198 to register your car for the display and possible track time on SATURDAY 8-21-2010. You may get two pit passes per car and enjoy the day with other vintage racers at the fairgrounds. Get to the track before 9 AM. Call JACK to get registered. ALWAYS a great racing week end. Share the USAC pits.

Don't forget to sign up for DuQuoin at th same time. Nothing like the fairgrounds at night. Show off your car, talk open wheel racing, get some track time.

These are two of the best dates.

My weekend is a little different. Bloomington Friday night, Springfield Saturday, Lawrenceburg saturday night. The Champ cars on the mile are what racing is all about. Nothing better than watching the Cadillacs of open wheel racing.

Question - Are they selling pit passes at the Gate 6 tunnel into the infield? If not, it would appear that I would have to purchase an infield ticket to get into the infield to get to the pit entrance to purchase a pit pass. I haven't parked in the infield for years, so don't know how this works. I do know that you can sit in the grandstand for an additional $5 with a pit pass. Since we are bringing two people who are going to the fair, not the races, it looks like they should get out before we drive into the infield or they have to purchase infield tickets, right? Thanks for any information you can give on this process.

Re: Illinois State Fair-Auto Racing Itinerary

Frank,
The way it usually works is when you park in the infield what you pay to get in goes to your pitpass or you can try telling them that you are getting pitpasses and they may let you by. Regardless you will still have to pay to park in the infield.

Thanks Chad. I knew the parking would cost but wasn't sure about the rest. I appreciate the information.

Re: The Springfield Weekend Coming Up!

If I'm not mistaken, it's gonna cost you $20 a person to park in the infield, unless you have race tickets IN HAND at gate 6....:15:
They figure you're gonna watch the race for $7 from the infield, otherwise.....

Re: The Springfield Weekend Coming Up!

Thanks again for the help other members have given on this question. I also made some phone calls and this is how I understand it works. When you to in Gate 6 you pay $20 for an infield pass. This includes $5 for admission to the fair. It does not appear to me that you have to pay for parking in the infield, since the press release says that only those who don't have an infield pass or pit pass (i.e. those with grandstand tickets) have to pay the $7.

To get a pit pass, you go to the pit gate, show them the infield ticket, and pay the difference between the price of that and the price of a pit pass. If you want to go into the grandstand also, it costs an additional $5 if you have a pit pass.

So, it looks to me like you can drive in, park in the infield, go to the pits and then watch the race from the grandstand for $35. This is based upon what I have read in the press release and what I have been told by Track Enterprises.

If this is not correct, please help me out. Thanks.

I would like to hear about the weather from someone close as well

Im in Indy. There are several storm cells in the area. Most have cleared out since I first looked around noon today, but there is another very large cell coming right at Springfield.

show delayed? Is there a concert right after?

Thanks

Re: The Springfield Weekend Coming Up!

Apparently there were a few sprinkles an hour or so ago from the first small front to come through, but none on the northwest side. Looks like lots of red and orange just to the west of us now, however. I'll give an update later tonight. And yes, there is a concert; Selena Gomez.

9:00 pm Central - Thunder, lightning, heavy rain. Looks like this system extends all the way through Missouri to Eastern Nebraska. Not good.

Since I can not be at Springfield I will have to look forward to the pictures my childhood neighbor Midwest-Connection will post. I know Rich plans on being there and he takes great photos.

Hope Dean will do live streaming from Springfield and the weather co-operates and everything is a go for the racing action.

Good luck to all the Silver Crown competitors!!!

Not sure about Saturday but Dean was in California on Thursday.

Thanks Vukie, I guess I can do without live streaming as long as the weather clears and the Silver Crown teams do not lose another race this year. I will pray for that 7 A. M. clearing someone else mentioned earlier.

Re: The Springfield Weekend Coming Up!

Getting a good bit of rain this evening. If it stops soon, the track could be perfect tomorrow. Wishful thinking probably. If it does rain out, I hope they have a rain date in mind already. The year it rained out and they ran it in October, it was a great race. I have a feeling that we will get it in tomorrow, and maybe I'll see a few of you there.

Re: The Springfield Weekend Coming Up!

Trouble is, if the show gets delayed by the weather like it did 2 years ago, they will shorten the race so they can make the concert curfew, but get it in tommorow.
Been a long time since they've postponed a Springfield race, although the Monday show in ? '85 or '86 was said to be one of the all-time best ever?

OK fella's, is it a total soup bowl? Can't believe it would be as dry as it has been. There are some concerns due to the three hour plus drive.

I enjoy this race, and I am packed and gassed up! It does appear on the radar to be a beautiful Summer day shaping up over there. I expect a late start (it is USAC isn't it :3:)

any updates at this late stage would be appreciated!

Re: The Springfield Weekend Coming Up!

drove through a lot of heavy rain last night from Macon to Springfield. However this morning the radar is clear and it weather forecasts say we should be good today. Only a 10 to 20 percent chance depending on what you look at. Hoping last nights rain translates into a good show today. Macon last night was great in basically every class they ran with lots of two and three wide racing. Some of the best midget heats I've ever seen as well.

Just got home from a six plus hour drive

Had a corn dog and a lemon shake up, turned around and drove home

Thanks USAC, with all the information and communication in this day and age you really did a great job of getting the word out.

USAC had no intention of running this race as the band/stage from last evenings concert was still set up on the main straight. I do believe that would have allowed you to post this information on various media's.

******* Dumb *****

(ps - can't wait for the next race :42::)

Dude, IT RAINED!!! :14:

Last night at 11:00, my car was an island in the middle of a 7" deep lake in the motel parking lot. It rained so hard that we couldn't read the lighted Super 8 sign out front from the motel lobby.

They might have been able to run the track in but the low spots in the infield & the pit area were flooded. The rest of the pits were softer than goose poop.

I'll be damn surprised if it's dry enough for Sunday's ARCA show.

Really sorry to hear of your 6+ hour ordeal! Mine was 17 hours & 1050 miles. A month ago Terre Haute was 19 hours & 1180 miles.

Stop by after the race at DuQuoin, we'll have a BEER & drown our sorrows! :32:
