Re: Wiilie Nelson Special Superduke
I remember it too. I saw Duke Cook race dozens of times when I was a kid.

Re: Wiilie Nelson Special Superduke
If you look closer at the hood, it was the Willie Nelson "High Times" special. :5:
Could someone do that in today's "politically correct" world? :7: David. |
Re: Wiilie Nelson Special Superduke

Doug Trost in Pleasant Hill, OH put that car together for Duke and wrenched for Duke. First race for that car was at Volusia Co. FLA. However, Red did mechanic for Duke and build motors, but did not build the Willie Nelson Nance car for Super Duke.

Re: Wiilie Nelson Special Superduke
Yes, check it out!! It came out of the Nance Stable. So that had to be late 70's early 80's.

Re: Wiilie Nelson Special Superduke
Bounce you're close, Duke showed up at Eldora with a basket case. Wanted to go to Terra Haute the next day. We took the car back to Carl's and worked all night putting it together, made Terra Haute, transferred through B. Mag went bad in the A.

I also have a picture of the red and blue Willie Nelson sponsored car (which came before the Nance cars), I'll have to scan it, and post it for you. |
Re: Wiilie Nelson Special Superduke
There needs to be an update here, My father and I , Red Pedersen, built the first Nance car Duke drove, the one that got destroyed at New Bremen, the Trosts did the replacement car.
I still say though, I liked Duke's watson car better. That car looked like a real race car,and drove like it too.As Willie Davis said, the ***** was the last of the dinosaurs. Also when Willie Nelson started sponsering Duke it originally was called Willie Nelson and family. |
Re: Wiilie Nelson Special Superduke
So Duke, Did ya come to Lima when they had Chili for Willie, Around the time ol Willie was gettin into trouble for taxes. 10, 15 yrs ago.

Bob,
The car was the last Watson to make Indy, the car Bobby Grim drove. It has been restored as it was before the Grim car.Beautiful job I must say too. |
Re: Wiilie Nelson Special Superduke
Is it the one he just did for a guy in Pa, I think? And I might add, a very expensive one as well, he paid more for the "altered" chassis, than most folks could dream of, but he wanted an "original" Watson Roadster, and was willing to pay the price, and it did start life as a Watson Roadster. Yes, it was beautiful, and it is one that can be driven, the engine was made up of almost all new parts. Bob
