Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
I have heard from solid source's that this years Hooiser 100 will be red flagged at lap 51.
This red flag is for the fans hoping to add some excitment. Not a fuel red. Add fuel change tires, adjust the cars. Change tire start in the rear. Then restarted double file !!!! This is asked by the promoter of USAC to make it more exciting for the fans. They have to run regulation silver crown fuel tanks no small ones. [Some teams thought about putting the smaller sprint car tank on] I'm not sure what to say about this ??? What does everybody think about the New Hoosier 100 ???? :34: :35: So after talking with Bob and thinking about this here is the deal Bob Sargent is probally the last promoter in line to keep the Hoosier 100 ALIVE!! Other groups have tried and have lost money SO Bob has come up with this idea to add excitment to the Hoosier 100 Modifieds will be running that night which should help make the track wider and better for the SIlver Crown cars. Bob understands tradition but also knows something needs to be changed to make this more exciting for the fans in the stands. USAC Silver Crown car owners had even agreed to run heat races at the Hoosier 100. Bob shot that down. Bob feels that the number of red flags in the past Hoosier 100 didn't upset the fans as it was a part of the action of the night. So if a red comes out after lap 35 that will count as the lap 51 red flag. If the race gets to lap 51 and the red flag waves it will be for only 5 to 10 minutes at the most. Bob wants it to be only 5 minutes long. In this 5 minutes the fans can get a drink and popcorn, talk to their neighbor sitting next to them and get caught up on the race by the announcer? [normally you can't hear while the race is on]. What's bad about that? As many have been to my various Racin'-Fest and we have tried different stuff. Kokomo a 50 lap feature with a red at 40 then double file restart. Putnamville a yellow at lap 25 of 30. Kokomo midgets with passing points, etc, etc. Most fans liked those changes at those races, so what is different? Why not try something different, it gets the fans talking, draws intrest to the Hoosier 100 and fixes what normally is a race that somebody leads all 100 laps. How much talk has this caused? In past years how much did you talk about this event this far ahead of the race date?? Bottom line is if change doesn't fix this event and fans don't come this will in all probality could be the last of the 1 mile events. Bob Sargent will be on the Racin' with DO show May 10th. Come talk with him or send me your questions. |

The only time an unnatural stoppage in a race is a good thing, is when it's done for safety purposes. No exceptions.

I live in the St. Louis area, have been to a ton of DuQuoin and Springfield Silver Crown races and maybe a 1/2 dozen or so at Indy
I love the Silver Crown races on the dirt miles... The Hoosier 100 last year wasn't the most exciting race, I'll agree - but if I were the promoter I would leave it alone another year or two and see how this thing works out with adding the mods. That should bring some more fans and cut down on the down time that night, making the whole event and evening more entertaining. |
Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
I agree with Jerry...

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
Jerry said it all!!! Does Tradition mean anything anymore?

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
I hate it when they stop a race for fuel.
If theyre going to do that, Let`s make it a twin 50 Then they might have two good races. |
Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
Agree very bad idea. Twin 50, yes just crown two winners if you want to make a "better" show. Is this the same bad thinking as in Knoxville? Don't take the SPRINT out of the cars.

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
Jerry has got it right. That will change my plans, vote with your billfold.
Is Track Enterprises still promoting the race? If you don't like the idea they need to hear your voice. |
Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
I don't usually agree with tradition deciding things. Stopping a race to me is something I have never thought was a good idea. That just gives it the impression of 51 parade laps followed by a 49 lap race. Sure you have to make it through those first 51, and your position on lap 50 will affect your position on lap 52 and so on. I think (2) 50 lap races are a better idea. I still do think people should support Silver Crown races and the Indy Mile, maybe just voice your opinion to the promotor. If I didn't live 5 hours from Indy I would go, and if you've never been it's a pretty neat place.

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
I e-mailed Track Enterprises to ask about this. Within 10 minutes I had a reply that they were stopping at 51 laps. My reply was that I didn't like to see a race stopped for any reason but safety. Suggested that they read IOW to see what the fans thought of this.

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
was debating seriously going this year, would have to close up my business way early but if they're stopping at halfway then they can have it, I'll stay home and wait untill the next night for the Little 500.

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
yea, i think all the drivers should switch cars at lap 51. and then give them an ice cream cone to eat along the way. i guess you see how i feel about it.:2:

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
If they aren't trying to intentionally kill Silver Crown racing, you could have fooled me.:7: If they have to do this, then run two 50 lap races. Take a "halfway" break of 15 minutes, NO MORE, and make the teams redraw for starting positions. That should spice things up.:3:

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
And to think I was excited about getting to run my first Silver Crown race in a couple years. This makes about as much sense as inverting the top 6. That didn't make more exciting racing as they thought it would. While I don't like changing tradition, at least Track Enterprises is Promoting the race. A couple years ago there was no Hoosier Hundred to go to....

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
Since Track Enterprises is promoting all three dirt mile Silver Crown shows, does that mean they are thinking of doing this at Springfield and DuQuoin also?:19::15:

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
I think instead of stopping the race they should require 12 inch wide double diamond rear tires like days of old when the track stayed good all day. Since fat tires we have gotten rolled down tracks with not much passing. Each mile track only has a surface for so long with todays tires. Hot Laps.
But shrinking the tires will never happen, might require drivers skills that a wide tire masks. That would be like getting the horse back in the barn. I think the red flag will be good for the fans cause some cars will change tires and make adjustments and start in the rear of the double file and maybe some will stick it out in the front with what they got. My question to the teams is spending $500 to $900 fresh tires worth the pay? But mile dirt races are tradition! Messing with that upsets the fans. This will be interesting that's for sure. from Washington, D.C. to the Hoosier 100 to the Knoxville Nationals......
change SUCKS!!!!! Until recently, you rarely saw a race stopped to add fuel. Now it is becoming commonplace. Maybe we need to say "When the green flag drops...the bulls**t starts." |
Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
This isn't being stopped to add fuel !
It's being stopped to add excitment for the fans ! Teams can run a light load if they want to or fill it up. The red flag is for the fans not the teams. :33: |
Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
For those of you so outrageously insisting people vote with their wallets, keep in mind this is a race Track Enterprises can't even see fit to reschedule when it rains out. What does that tell you about the stability of the event? If the crowd gets low enough, you can bet Track Enterprises will vote with their wallet too and bye bye Hoosier 100.
if I were you, I'd get out to any Hoosier 100 while you can. |
Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
Just from the post here I don't think the fans are in favor of the red!

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
Will there be a lucky dog??? Will your announcer say Bogity, boogity boys..."LETS GO RACING BOYS".......but you can wait til after the half to race tho............:15:

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
I really don't think this will add much excitement, just a gimmick. Sometimes change is good, but sometimes tradition is such a beautiful thing that it shouldn't be messed with. Keep the 60 thousand pound dump trucks from packing the track and maybe the cushion and passing might add some excitement. Double file restarts scare me. It will be exciting till someone leaves the ballpark. It's a wrong move, I think, but what do I know?

I don't know why anyone is surprised. If there is a way to screw something up USAC will find it.

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
D O has the right answer it has been nice to see the old silver crown racing highlights with the narrow tires and watch them go into the corner's two and three wide. They hardly do any track prep anymore it is usually dry slick hot lapping on the miles. The best silver crown racing to watch was at Terre Haute because with the heavy full load they always pushed the cushion to the wall made for some real racing there and now it is was on this years schedule and now gone. This new rule sucks big time along with adding the freaking modifieds to the show,he will probably run there feature at the 51 lap break. If they want to make it more interesting try the double file on the restarts first and do some dam track prep for a change.Bigger question is if the promoter came up with this idea who was the dipchit in the usac office that okayed it????

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
I vote no for a stop. If a driver wins by a straight, then so be it. He earned it. I hate all these people that think they have to "fake" racing. Let the racing play out....not every finish is going to be side by side. A fan doesn't walk away pissed because EVERY race wasn't a classic. I agree with the comment about track prep. I'd try that first before this stunt. I hope they listen to the real fans that support it every week and not try and get the "new" fans that everybody seems to search for all the time.

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
More excitement for the fans? Did they bother to ask the silver crown fans what they thought? It is a unique racing format and car combination that stands out from the rest. Instead of trying to make it fit the template of other races, celebrate and emphasize the differences. On a well prepared surface, the silver crown cars put on a heck of a show. I've seen them at DuQuoin and THAT, and loved every minute of it.

Re: Hoosier 100 Red Flag at 51 laps ??? coming in 2010
The best race that I have seen there, was when it rained right before practice started (maybe 2001 or 2002). The track was heavy, and they had the cushion right up against the wall. That was a exciting race.
My vote, water the track so they can race and not run the bottom all night.:6: Don't red flag it.:7: |
