I wanna move to Indiana

I am new to this site and my ultimate goal is to move to Indiana for 2 reasons. First one is I love non-wing sprint car racing and I know Indiana is the Mecca. Second one is I am recently invovled in racing photography and love the work I see from the region.
Can anyone help me out as far as good areas and areas to stay away from as far as looking to live? LOL I have never even been to Indiana but I feel my heart is already there. Will I be received well as far as a photographer goes or is it a good ol boy club?
Any information, help, ideas, comments would sure be appreciated.

Thats a really cool story....as far as where to live, maybe you could live where Bob and Monica live, They always seem to live where the races are. Best of luck and maybe we will see you soon.

I'm a Hoosier by birth, but if I were in your position, I'd look into any of the many small towns around Indy. There is GREAT racing in all four directions. Wings? Go East. Late models? South. Non wing? Pick a direction and pack up!

I don't know what you do to support your habit, but that probably will play a part in your decision.

Welcome and good luck!

You'd fit right in! (Have seen your pictures)
There are a bunch of 'ole boys' that shoot pictures but our only request is that you buy us a hamburger or a hot dog and a coke at every race for the first two years of your stay here! (And if you go to Gas City, please don't leave any trash in the infield)

just move to the greatest area to watch sprint car racing and that would be southeastern indiana and you will be a skip hop and a jump from all the great tracks you would want to see:31: the best racing tracks the great fans of i o w enjoy each and evey weekend:8: you can take your pick and you will not see a bad race in a 100 mile area and all of us in indiana love every week end to see which track has the best show :22: good luck and we all would love to see a great racing fan come to the greatest racing state in the u. s a.

The 'ole boys' are just that, old! They're a good bunch of guys, most of them have been shooting forever. They accept Canadians. With all of the California transplant racers in and around Indy they would even probably accept a West Coaster.

Thats funny. I am an original Californian, born and raised 6 miles from Ascot Park. I live in Washington now and just cannot get used to the wings. I love sprint car racing but non-wing it where it is at for me.:10:

Re: I wanna move to Indiana

I am not from Indiana but have been there 5 or 6 times. I would say the area north of Indy would be a great center point to many tracks. I stayed in Carmel the last two trips and it was nice. Kokomo/Gas City/ Anderson(Little 500, to the north in less than 45 mins) go west you have Lincoln park and Terre Huate, go south and there is Paragon, Bloomington, and Twin Cities, and to the east you have Winchester, L-Burg, Eldora, and dont forget Mt Lawn!!!LOL. there are others but it is a great center point. Oh yes, in Indy there is Indy dirt mile, Indy Speedrome, IRP, and Indy itself.

Good luck, and dont forget that you would have many Steak and Shakes all around you too!!!LOL

I wish I lived out there too. With the rent I pay here in Jersey ($1060.for a 1 BR) I could rent two out there. Just finding work would be tough.
Later,JERSEY

Being a Evergreen Stater myself and moving to Indiana I can say: "What are you waiting for?" I'm a east central Indiana guy and I love it. 50 miles from Kokomo and Eldora. 20 miles from Gas City. Besides, the other tracks down south aren't much more than 2-3 hour drives with the exception of Tri-State. Hurry up and get here!

Pack your bags! As where to settle in at, thats really up to you. Weather is the same across the whole state basically. I'm from Shelbyville and love it. I'm 20 minutes from Indy, hr from Bloomington, hr from Lawerenceburg, hr and 20 mins from Gas City & Kokomo, Tri-County 3 hrs minimum, 2 hrs from Eldora, Terre Haute 1.5 hrs. Not a bad area, good houses, prices great, good interstate access. Almost right in the middle of everywhere. Brownsburg is an hr where a lot of teams are. Always racing close to home and every weekend!

You might want to take a "test" trip out there. You are getting some great information. I have been making one to two trips a year for most of the last ten, and I love it. Unfortunately my work is fairly specialized and I there isn't any comparable work available up there for me, so I have to be satisfied with my trips north when I can take them.

I am curious, do you have a link to your pictures? It is probably right on your posts, but I am fighting a cold right now and thinking isn't my strong suit. Not like it ever is. . . .

I grew up in the Anderson & Muncie areas a LONG time ago but we could go to Armscamp, Kokomo, Ft. Wayne, Mt.Lawn, Richmond, the original old 16th street, Dayton, Sun Valley, Salem and Winchester and the longest drive we faced was about 2 hours. We never had the wing or non-wing options as all the big cars were CAGELESS. Been away from Indiana for a LONGER time and I really miss the hub of the racing activity but I really miss the Moonlight on the Wabash.

If I didn't hate cold weather so much, I'd consider moving there too. But a word of warning. Don't let any of those hoosiers try to tell you that a place called White Castle serves hamburgers! :)

Those look pretty good, but it is hard to judge from Facebook pictures. I know the ones that I put up are very reduced resolution. I see that you are a CNC machine operator, and I do believe that there are one or two manufacturing companies left in Indiana, but I couldn't tell you who is hiring. I do know that there is a demand for them here in Houston, what with all the manufacturing of oilfield equipment.

Or you might check out Hurco in Indy to see if you have transferable skills they need.

Just my own opinion but I would say if I was in position I would agree with looking around the outskirts of Indy.Avon,Brownsburg,Speedway.You will have better luck finding work plus all the race shops are around that area.besides that its kind of the heart of everything so your in the middle of all the good tracks you would love,Bloomington,Gas City,Kokomo,Lawrenceburg I could keep going but you get the point.I live in Anderson but there is nothing as far as work here, just the Little 500.I hope you make it here and you will surely see the best non-wing sprint car racing around.Good Luck.

Yes I would love to be smack dab in the middle of it. In fact I would love to work at one of these race shops, but I know thats asking for a lot lol. Thank you for the help

I second the brownsburg area. While I live just north of brownsburg (Whitestown). my mother and brother both live there so I am there alot. Its a nice town and close to everything. Any town on the North and West side of indy is pretty good though.

North side suburbs, Fishers, Noblesville, Carmel, and west side suburbs, Avon, Plainfield have some similarities and all the Starbucks you want. North of that, all the towns I have experienced have a small town wonderful feel, if that pace and space is what you like. The further south you go, the more forest and nature activities there are. Indianapolis is great, both Broad Ripple and downtown have fun walkable public areas, and you can't go wrong with a place named Speedway, within hearing distance of the track.

I don't live in Indiana anymore, but was just back visiting and was loving every minute. Here are three pics I took from my phone, we went to all three USAC shows Fri, Sat, Sun in Gas City, Lawrenceburg, and Kokomo April 16-18.

My brother has a house for sale in North Vernon. 5 minutes from Twin cities, 35 or 40 minutes from Brownstown and maybe an hour to Lawrenceburg. Also have salem about an hour away.
