Thanks, Bill. Not only is the IOW family signing the petition in droves, many of them are also putting into really compelling words, just exaclty what this place means to them. Race fans are the best.

I'm amazed that more open wheel fans have not already signed the petition, there should be hundreds of signatures by now. It sure would be nice if everybody would add a comment or two !

Signed.

Also, one board member said they were split into two groups on the matter. Of note, I believe the VP on the fair board is a local construction guy who is buds with the developers. Not good. Number for the Purdue Extension Office which houses the fair board is 812-462-3371 (according to channel 2 here in terre haute)

Signed and forwarded to friends. Another post suggested a large crowd of supporters attend the next public meeting of the fair board to show support for the track. Count me in. If anyone has information as to the date and location, please post it.

There a are couple of Tony's with clout in Indiana that have ties to the Terre Haute Action Track. Tony George and Tony Stewart...hey guys, we could use a little help over here!

Re: Save Vigo County Fairgrounds & Action Track... Sign the Petition

I talked at length, this evening, with a board officer. One that's been on the board for many years. He said that there are two camps. But the "do not sell" camp still has a decent majority on the "sell" guys. And probably will for the forseeable future. But make no mistake about it, the balance is shifting. So, eventually, this will become a reality. The good news is that the board elections only happen once a year or when a board member keels over or something.

The good news is that the King/Dorsett/Hamilton group is confident they can turn the place around within three years. If they can do that, before the balance tips to the dark side and they can show a positive economic impact, maybe they can buy some more time.

In the mean time, whether it be petitions, calls or whatever, letting these guys know what kind of support the track has, can't hurt. Most are detached from racing, somewhat and might not even know, otherwise.

Re: Save Vigo County Fairgrounds & Action Track... Sign the Petition

As of the 11 pm news on WTWO chanel 2 in TH, they interviewd fair board members Decker, Harris and the VP of the board there coments were basicly as follows:

Decker: What's going to be the best for the Fair Board Assn and for the 4-H'ers and see what the community thinks.

Harris: We got to do what's best for the 4-H'ers to provide them with best enviorment possible.

VP of Fair Board: There are 2 groups, one that belives it should sold and another that it should be left alone. But we must provide the best enviroment for the 4-H'ers.

The main theme here is that to provide the 4-H'ers the best possible enviroment. Okay, let's do that by reinvesting the monies brougth in to the fair grounds from the events that are paying the fair grounds for being there.

Furthermore, just from the race track stand point, with some routine maintaince to the race track (i.e. repair catch fences, spectator fence (infield), infield tower replaced and relocated and having a promoter/ promotion group that is willing to beat the bushes to intice manufactures to test thier products on track or race teams (testing dates) to do the same, this could/ would bring revenue to the facility and community. These same ideas should also work with the drag strip that's located on the property.

These are just some simple ideas that would "class up" the facility and would create place that would do more that sit there and fall apart.

I do belive that King/Dorsett/ Hamilton group are the ones that would have the best chance of showing the fair board that with some hard work that instead of the fans begging to have races @ THAT you will have fans asking "what time do the races start" and the racers and sancitioning bodies lining up to race at THAT.

Let's keep the pressure on the fair board NOT TO SELL UNLESS THE ACTION TRACK WILL BE CONTINUED

That is scary right there, most of the 4-H people are clueless about running a business the size of a fairgrounds. My personal experience with our local board- I was asked to speak to them by our local newspaper about the possibility of building a multi purpose race track with their new fairgrounds when they build it. I presented the aproximate initial investment, the profit potential the fairgrounds would have and the positive economic impact it would have on the local business'. They listened intently and when I was through talked among themselves. The unanimous decision was a racetrack would "take away" from the 4-H fair they hold for 10 days every year.

So "providing the best environment for the 4-H'ers" might mean nice, new buildings and no racetrack to take away from the fair.

Lets hope not!

Re: Save Vigo County Fairgrounds & Action Track... Sign the Petition

If anything the track pulls in more people to the fair grounds, they don't take away from the 4-H people. I love to go to the fair for the 4-H exhibits, but I also enjoy the racing. The racing season is larger than the fair, and has a lot to offer the entire city.

You are all doing a great job with the petition. A story about the petition hit the front page of the Terre Haute paper Friday morning and the signatures have jumped to over 700 and still growing from all over the country. :thumb:

I urge everyone to contact the new mayor of Terre Haute, the visitors bureau, the fair board...anyone you can think of to let them know we do not want to lose this valuable and historic facility to another shopping center.

Thanks again...you are all awesome.

Signed:thumb: I have never been to THAT as I live in Northern California, but I am a huge race fan and to hear all you hoosiers talk about her the way you do reminds me History wise of a track here at home The Silver Dollar speedway and to me it would be a devestating blow to the sport if tracks like these were brushed under the rug for a couple of guys that want to make a $. My brother is a transplant to Indy from NorCal for the sole purpose of racing a sprintcar at Gems like That, The Grove, Eldora and All the great tracks in the midwest and to see any of these storied tracks go away would be a disservice to all race fans, Past, Present, and Future. By the way I already have tentative plans for the usac shows that may be on the card at THAT this season so hopefully this petition allows racing at THAT so I can see her in person and also meet some of you IOWers.:checkered:

It's like a snow ball rolling down hill, now! A 4-Her from Terre Haute South High School started it. IOW gave it the numbers to get the attention the Tribune Star and now the community is joining in. I bet there are a thousand signatures by the time the weekend is over.

You seem to on top of things there. When is the next time the Fair Board meets, or whomever has the say of selling the fairgrounds ?
It seems to me that a huge presence at that next meeting might make a difference, I live in Evansville, but would be glad to drive up to be at the meeting as I'm sure a bunch of Midwesterners would. Please see when the next important meeting is and put it on the net, I would think that a crowd of race fans from all over miht make a difference.

Mid february is all that Dave Hartmann said this week. As soon as I hear an exact date, I'll post it here.

It was featured on WTHI news, last night, also:

http://www.wthitv.com/global/story.asp?s=7776287

As you can see, this has become a big story here and is has definitely caught the attention of the Fair Board.
