Tulsa restaurants!
Sorry, I know we may have had this topic already awhile back but I can't seem to find the thread. I'm in need for some help of restaurant suggestions unique to the Tulsa area. The last several years we have been going to Tally's Good Food on Route 66 entirely too many times while in the area and I know there's got to be MANY more local hotspots. Now, I'm not talking your normal Villager or Applebee's restaraunt that I can get in any city, I'm looking for the 'I can't believe I've been coming here for years and haven't eaten here before' type of restaraunt! Suggestions needed soon! Thanks and see everyone there! :)

Re: Tulsa restaurants!
I've done the hamburger store a few times. Always had good eats when I was there.
For the past several years I have stuck to Talley's though. :thumb: I just can't bring myself to not going there. That is unless you try the dried up food bar at the Indian Creek Casino down in Southern Hills by ORU! There used to be a diner adjacent to Tulsa University, the place was chrome inside and out a classic. But TU bought them out and they went by the wayside last year. :crying: |

Re: Tulsa restaurants!
Don't know if you're a breakfast eater, but Jimmy's Egg on E 31st is the place to go. Great service, fabulous food and relatively cheap prices, as breakfast goes.

Albert G's BBQ 2748 S. Harvard. In an old gas station across from the Village Inn.
The owners name is Chuck, tell him the "Maine man" sent you in. |
Re: Tulsa restaurants!
Thanks gang for all of the suggestions! I'll plan on dieting when I get home! :rolling: I plan on trying a few of these places! I appreciate the directions/streets too. Getting much more familiar each time I go so they shouldn't be too hard to locate. I love Tally's but am very excited to have other new places to try! Thanks again and see ya all there!

I was born and raised in Tulsa and lived there for 35 years.
Here are a few of my favorites that I hit everytime I'm in town. BBQ - Elmer's "It be bad" BBQ. http://www.elmersbbq.net/ Asian - Viet Huong. Though it is owned by a Vietnamese family and have traditional Vietnamese food, they also have Chinese too. The place looks like a **** hole from the outside, but the food is awesome. It's been voted #1 in T-Town for many many years. Don't do the buffet, order off the menue. When people ask how good it is, I just tell them to imagine that your grandmother was Asain...I eat there several times throughout the week... Hamburgers - It's a toss up. Hanks Hamburgers has been around since the 1940's. It's small, always crowded but the burgers are great. Goldies Patio Grill has been voted #1 for quite a few years. Steaks - Jamil's Steak House... Been there forever, pricey but you better go with an appetite. Unbelievable steaks! Seafood - Another place that looks like a ******** and isn't in the best part of town (but is was a good part of town when they opened in 1932!!!). Unbelievable food! http://www.whiteriverfishmarket.com Chili - Ike's Chili House. Hands down, the best in town, it's all they serve... In business since 1908 (no ****). Coney-I-Lander - Make sure it is one of the REAL "Coney-I-Lander's" there are a lot of knockoffs there and none of them hold a candle to the orginal. They are small coneys, but DAMN they're good. In business since 1907. There is one on 11th street, 1 mile north from the fairgrounds. Breakfast - Cottons - For breakfast, most people seem to like Tally's. Probably because it's close to the fairgrounds. But IMO, Cotton's is much better. When you walk in, it feels like you just stepped back in time to the 50's or 60's. The crowd on the weekends is kind of rough, but we go every night after the Chili Bowl and it is usually empty or just a couple of people, it's open 24/7. It's a "greasy spoon" but a great, cheap breakfast with excellent service. If you go after the races, we'll be seated next to the door, drop by and say hi! Things to see in Tulsa The Gilcrease museum is awesome if you like that sort of thing. http://www.gilcrease.org/ Tulsa has a great zoo that is a "sister zoo" to the San Diego zoo. http://www.tulsazoo.org/ If you like firearms, the J.M. Davis Arms Museum is very, very cool. It's in Claremore, about 25 miles to the east of Tulsa. Well worth the trip. Every type of firearm that has EVER been made. http://www.state.ok.us/~jmdavis/ The Tulsa Air & Space Museum is pretty cool too. http://www.tulsaairandspacemuseum.com/ |
Re: Tulsa restaurants!
The Rib Crib is always one of our stops, great BBQ.

Re: Tulsa restaurants!
The Rib Crib (chain restaurant) doesn't have anything for Elmer's...
|
Re: Tulsa restaurants!
Thanks Hawker! I know it took you some time to type all of that so thank you! Hopefully others traveling to Tulsa will also jot down a few of these places and try some of their's oldest and best restaurants! I'm now not only excited to see the races but can't wait to eat in T-Town!

Ok, I've spent this time talking up Elmers, I felt that I'd better let you all in on the BEST BBQ I have EVER had. Unfortunatly, it is 90 miles to the NW of Tulsa in Ponca City, OK.
I worked in the music biz for 17 years (sound engineer). During that time, I did sound for a private birthday party for a very wealthy family. A company named Head Country BBQ http://www.headcountry.com/ catered it. I have been hooked ever since. Their BBQ is unbelievable, their list of championships, including a WORLD championship is testament. Even if you can't make it up there, do yourself a favor and stop in to most any Oklahoma grocery store and pick up some of their BBQ Sauce. It's the only sauce I will ever use and order it by the gallon off their webpage! |

Re: Tulsa restaurants!
Indeed, all of the Sonic Drive-In's went "out" a little while back. That did include the one in the Castleton area. I used to go there every so often for lunch. It's a good place and we hit it up quite a bit last year. Mmmmm!
The Rib Crib is mighty tasty, so Elmer's must be pretty good! Cheddar's is usually a regular stop while we're out in Tulsa, too. They have really good food and nice portions. A great lunch stop. I don't think you can ever go wrong with Johnny Carino's. I hit up the one in Muncie quite a bit. Ahh, I'm going to miss it. Good times and good food... |
Re: Tulsa restaurants!
I went to the Air and Space Museum a couple years ago, and found it to be quite enjoyable. Maybe a little smaller than I had expected, but you can tell that they were working to make it bigger.
I don't remember then name of it, but I also like the Mexican place on the west side of Harvard, just south of 21st. We go there for lunch, and it's usually not crowded at all. |
Re: Tulsa restaurants!
Well now were talking. Part of my fun each year going to Tulsa is taking in various attractions like the ones mentioned.
A couple that have not been mentioned that are well worth the trip are located in OK City. 1) www.nationalcowboymuseum.org Similar to the Gilcrease in Tulsa it has western art and hosts the rodeo hall of fame. Cowboys and rodeos are not my forte' but I have been to this place twice in 14 years of Chili Bowls and enjoyed myself each time. In fact I am due for a trip again. 2) www.oklahomacitynationalmemorial.org The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum was created to honor those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever by the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Folks I am telling you this place is compelling as it gets. If you want to get up close and personal to what a terrorists attack looks, feels and smells like this is a fine place to start. It is a Federal memorial so they did it right. I would encourage all Chili goers to make the 90 minute trip to OK City at least once for this attraction. |

Re: Tulsa restaurants!
First I'd like to say thanks to everyone who offered suggestions - unfortunately we left at 6am on Tuesday morning so DRKRACEFAN, I didn't get to use any of your suggestions but I did get a nice variety of NEW places to eat. Wish I could have tried all of them but there's always next year!
Here's what we tried... Hawker thanks for suggesting Elmer's BBQ - Great food/BBQ! It Be Bad BBQ was exactly that! They were so nice and even gave us 2 jars of their BBQ sauce just for stopping! Told us just to pass the word about Elmers! Will be back for sure! Also tried Ike's Chili. I was a bit disappointed on this one - didn't blow us away (maybe we should have ordered it with beans?). The coney dog was good enough to come back for but didn't like JUST the chili by itself. Maybe a matter of taste! We wanted and tried to get Hideaway Pizza but this place closes at 10:30 Fri/Sat and 9:30 during the week so we were out of luck each night after the races! Will have to try for lunch I guess next year. We really struck out on the pizza joints in Tulsa! Sprinter54 thanks for suggesting Jimmy's Egg! We loved this one! We ate at Tally's the first day - again, very average, got our food at different times as other people in our party and service was lacking - the next morning we tried Jimmy's Egg and went there a couple days in a row! They have homemade bread/toast which was delicious!! Thumb's up here! STP thanks for suggesting BurgerStreet! Another good joint! Had this a couple times too - love the tator tots! Not many places you can get the tots! Also, thought it was funny you pointing out QuikTrips beverage selections until I went in one and man were you right, like the majority of the store is all beverage coolers! Checer'd Past thanks for suggesting Harden's and hoped you liked it too! We liked the taste/seasoning on the burgers! Very good and will be back here too! If anyone has the opportunity to try the Hammett House in Claremore, it is worth the 20 minute drive! Cream pies a mile high! All homemade dressings, pies, breads, etc. Great place! All in all, this post helped tons and we really appreciated the suggestions - no more arguing over where we were eating! (I had it all planned out) I will make it a point next year not only to visit our 'new favorites', but try some that we weren't able to get to like the Fish Market Hawker suggested! Thanks again and can't wait until the 2009 Chili Bowl!!:) Thanks all!!! Stacie |
