USAC Sprints--Terre Haute
Just a reminder. USAC Sprints at The Action Track this Saturday Sept. 12th. I don't have any affiliation with Terre Haute....Just think there is great racing there and the memories I have of the place...Seeing Jan Opperman win the Hulman Classic in (If memory serves me correctly) 1976. He showed up in The Speedway Motors 4X and they had to change the number to 64 since USAC didn't allow any letters, but numbers only. Seeing Gary Bettenhausen and Sheldon Kinser battle the last 10 laps in (Memory lapse again) 1978 on a cool Sept. sunday afternoon. One on the cushion and the other on the bottom.
Don't know what it is about that place, but it has always been special to me. I was happy to see the promotors put this race on the schedule when the Hut Hundred was canceled. They easily could have canceled and ran nothing. I enjoy the smaller tracks...but there's something special about seeing them on the Half-miles. Tim Wolffrum aka Cowboy |

Re: USAC Sprints--Terre Haute
THAT's the plan for Saturday. Some of my older Terre Haute memories include a Gary Bettenhausen '68 win in Willie Davis' #24; another Gary B. effort in '69 when he jumped into the #42 Ziegler sprinter (Herman Wise's ride), started on the tail and won; '70 Jim McElreath win in Rufus Gray owned #83 GAPCO Spl.; watched Dick "Toby" Tobias in #17 and Bruce Walkup in Seymour #29 log feature wins, also in '70; Gary B. again in '71 in Willie's #2; and Rollie Beale taking Ron Kilman's #3 to a THAT win in '72. There were others, of course, but I'd better quit now.
Fingers crossed for a great day weatherwise on Sat. :22: |

Man...Fish, you got me all excited with that Recap of past races. Had forgotten about some of those races. Now that I think about it.....I was at all of those races too. Thanks for the memories. I always had all of those guys on a pedestal.

I will be there in the infield somewhere around turn 3! :6:

Re: USAC Sprints--Terre Haute
I will be there, don't know if I will be taking pictures or something else. Hopefully the chance of rain all week doesn't happen that day, but knowing mother nature and her history with the track.......I won't say it.

Re: USAC Sprints--Terre Haute
I first went to Terre Haute in '65, and have many fond memories of the place. That includes a ride with Jack Hewitt in his 2-seater. But one memory that always pops up doesn't actually involve one of the heroes racing, per se. At one event, when the cars stopped on the main straight for a red, Toby loosened his belts, removed his gloves and helmet, and promptly took a nap! One of his crew guys woke him up when USAC called for the drivers to get ready for the restart.:3:

Re: USAC Sprints--Terre Haute
Fish, you are right those were some great race drivers and some great races. I stared going there in I think early or mid 50's as a child, but recall Jimmy Bryan and Duane Carter racing at the first race I attended. Many good days spent there. Worst day I spent there was the day Johnny White was hurt. I will be there this weekend, hope for good weather.

From the Action Track Web Site:
Saturday's First Financial Bank Sprint Car Classic presented by MacAllister Machinery and Dorsett Mitsubishi marks the final appearance of non-wing sprint cars at the Action Track this season. The track ticket office opens Saturday afternoon at 3pm, with fan gates set to open at 4pm. Hot lap sessions are scheduled to get underway at 5pm, with single car qualifying set to start at 6pm. Adult tickets for the infield start at just $10, with an Infield Family Pass for 2 adults and up to 4 children kids available for just $25, and good news, the Action Track tunnel to the infield is dry! Children 12 and under are free in general admission grandstand and bleacher seating areas with the purchase of an adult ticket. Advanced reserved seat tickets are available by calling (812) 236-7951. |

Re: USAC Sprints--Terre Haute
why do they start hot laps so early? oskaloosa doesn't start hot laps till 7:30
and they don't have any dust problem. would give them 2 more hours to water and 2 less under the sun. when i was a tike back during the non-wing days of knoxville we never got out of there till after midnight and neither i or my old man ever complained a bit. i hope all the family entertainment fans are happy chokin on the dust. i say screw them and make it good for the other 95% of us. |
