Why only 30-40 laps???

Why do sprint car features tend to be only 30 or 40 laps??? Why don't they ever run hundred lappers?????

Generally because they aren't very entertaining.

Sprint - The act or an instance of sprinting, especially a short race at top speed.

Or you can advertise a 30 lapper and then only run 25.......Right Tri-State and MSCS?

Re: Why only 30-40 laps???

Back in the days of real USAC sprint cars, with real Indy 500 drivers, the standard was 40 laps, with a number of 50s, twin 50s and a couple of 100 lappers...... and these races were run on real half mile tracks, not the little podunk quarter mile midget tracks they use today.
Or the dumbest feature ever! Running 100 mile SC cars in 50 lap races on a half mile. Those races should be 200 laps. Do the math.......

I suppose that part of the reason is so that the hundreds of
sportsmanhobbythundercarstreetstocks, who actually pay to keep these places open, can run their features.

*** are you taking about? When have you seen a 100 lap sprint car race on a half mile???? If your ran 100 lap on a half now with 410 ci. You would have to stop every 30 -40 laps for fuel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Why only 30-40 laps???

Duke, is right. It's mainly a fuel consumption problem with the bigger motors they run today. Back in the day they only ran 305's and a 327 was a "big" engine.

I think certain tracks would be an entertainment "challenge". Others it would be very entertaining. The Little 500 is, obviously, 500 laps and is about the most entertaining race you could get. The Hut 100 used to be great before midget racing died. I remember tons of twin 50's at Winchester, etc... that were fantastic.
In general though, a sprint is a sprint, meaning as fast as possible until the end. So 30-40 laps is probably good. Maybe a few twin 50's now and then to shake things up? Two features, double points days to attract cars?

I can remember when I was a kid, late 60's early 70's that they ran what was called the Coca-Cola 100 at the old Burg. I think they stopped at the 50 lap point to have a fuel stop. Fishburger may be able to confirm this, but I am pretty sure I have this right. Bob Bressert

A sprint is just that. Fuel consumption and the track wearing out make a 100 lapper something I personally do not want to see.

Re: Why only 30-40 laps???

just to clarify i believe he is making refernce to the silver crown cars running 50 lappers at say Eldora, Terre Haute, Manzy, the half miles, but running 100 at the miles, not talking about running 100 lappers or longer on the half milers with the sprinters for the exact reason you said, fuel comsumption and not being able to run the distance... myabe im missed the point you were making i dont know, but i think a longer silver crown race at the half miles would make sense...

Re: Why only 30-40 laps???

I thought the 100 lapper they had at Haubstadt three years ago was a success. Granted it was split into two 50 lappers, it still had some good action. Briscoe, Malone and Clayton swapped the lead a few times early. DC fell out after socking the wall while leading then Briscoe cruised around for a while. Still remember the drive Derek O'Dell put on the high side with around 20 to go then he drove it in too hard in turn 3, hit the wall and flipped. I think he had it won had that not happened, he was just sailing around the high side. Briscoe won over Short.

I think it depends on the track but I thought that 100 lapper had some good moments from start to finish. I love longer features and I'd like to see more 50 lappers and the occasional 100 lapper from time to time.

Re: Why only 30-40 laps???

Lawrenceburg use to run twin 100's in the fall and the Spring. This was 100 laps for the sprints and then 100 laps for the latemodels with a bonus if the same driver won both the spring and fall version. Of course you couldn't do that today because you would have a bunch of people on IOW complaining about having to sit and watch tin tops.:15:

Dad also said that many times after both features he would be standing on the front chute getting his picture taken and the track was still tacky enough that it would try and suck your boots off your feet. Try that today:17:
