MSCS @ Florence this Saturday!!!!!

Car owners and drivers are preparing for an intense period of racing activity which includes five increasingly big and bigger events over a short six week span. The Florence show will kick off a late season Race to Prosperity with a 30 lap feature paying $3,000 to win. Drivers are reminded that $100 in tow money will be paid to participants who made the pull to Kentucky but did not make the feature. The increased pay-offs until seasons end will provide the remaining 5 feature winners with a combined winners purse of $31,000 to shoot for. The results of the upcoming races at 4 different tracks might create a five way split if 5 different winners emerge from the pack to grasp a checkered flag.

MSCS sprints have made 3 appearances at Florence Speedway with the first appearance being in 2005. Each race there has produced a different winner. Dickie Gaines, Robert Ballou, and Chris Windom mastered the half mile track on those particular evenings. These 3 drivers have either won or finished in the top five in each of their two appearances at Florence. Darren Hagen, Kyle Cummins, and Dave Darland have been in the top ten on two occasions at the track.

Hud Cone of Oakland City, IN, holds the distinction of being the only driver to make and finish all three of those features and he turned in three top ten performances with the opportunities he earned. Over 50 different drivers have captured a feature starting spot at Florence Speedway. Only 10 of those have been in a Florence starting line-up more than once! Heat races to earn those starting spots have been competitive. Features have been dotted with new faces. The track serves as a neutral battle ground on the MSCS circuit!

Ricky Williams was one of those new faces late in the fall of 2007. He made the feature that night and continued on with the series to earn the MSCS Rookie of the Year honors in 2008. Currently Williams is battling Kyle Cummins for the 2009 MSCS title. The two drivers are separated in the standings by a mere 28 points! Rookie Brandon Mattox is third in points this season and finished 11th in his first appearance at Florence in May. This race has the potential to cause a shift throughout the top ten as the points race also resumes. Blake Fitzpatrick and Hud Cone round out the top five in points thus far.

The program on the 29th at Florence Speedway is a triple header and will also include a complete slate of late model and modified races. Information released by the track lists the starting time for the race at 7:30 P.M. The pit gates open at 4 P.M. and the main gate open at 6 P.M. with hot laps lined up in the chute. All times are E.D.T.

For those of you the did not go to Florence back in May for the MSCS show, It R***** the entire 3hr trip there from Haubstadt and for about an hour after we got there. We talked to promotor Josh King and he said we are gonna do everything we can to get this show in. And boy did he!!! The track was lightening fast all night long with a TON of passing. Dave Darland came from the 20th starting position and passed 11 cars to finish 9th. Chris Windom held off a hard charging Robert Ballou for his first MSCS win of the year. Here is the story from the May 16th MSCS race at Florence.

WINDOM RACES TO MSCS WIN AT FLORENCE

Union, KY. (May 16, 2009) Chris Windom of Canton, IL, won the Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car feature Saturday night at the Florence Speedway. Windom was behind the wheel of the Windom Motorsports Maxim owned by Preston Windom and wrenched by Jeff Walker. The Claxton powered sprinter is sponsored by Central Abrasives and Jeffs Jam it In Storage. It was MSCS career victory number two for the 18 year old driver.

The 25 lap feature was Windoms to win after the 15th lap. He had started on the pole but it was Nic Faas, to his outside on the first row, that would take the initial lead. Both had won qualifying heat races. The engine in Faas car flamed out after 5 laps and he parked it on the infield crossover road. Brady Short grabbed the lead on the restart. He led 9 fast laps before giving way to Chris Windom with Kyle Cummins challenging.

Only one factor remained as the finish neared. That was Robert Ballous late race charge. Ballou moved into second on the 21st lap. Windom and Ballou both went topside with lapped cars producing the next challenge. Although Ballou closed in no real opportunity presented itself. Windom and Ballou crossed the finish line one- two with one lapped car still in the mix.

Two time MSCS Champion Kyle Cummins would finish third after running with the frontrunners all night. Brady Short was fourth and Dickie Gaines was fifth. Short and Gaines were making their first MSCS appearances of the season. Jerry Coons Jr. paced the second five. Bub Cummings was seventh.

A couple of determined veterans were making time back in the pack. Dave Darland would earn the Keizer Aluminum Wheels MSCS Hard Charger of the Race by driving from a 20th starting spot to 9th. Damion Gardner, who finished eighth, started back in the ninth row. The two were involved in a multi car second heat, second turn crash that prevented either from obtaining a higher starting spot for the main. Instead of restarting, the cars were taken to the pits for repairs needed before the feature.

During the feature one red flag was displayed on lap 3 for an incident involving 3 cars in the third turn. The one driven by Kyle Wissmiller rolled over. The reinstituted MSCS work area rule was put to use with several cars requiring service. The feature also had two caution periods. The first yellow flag had been brought out as Faas slowed. The second came out when Hud Cone spun. Hud was able to restart and finished tenth. From lap seven on it was all green flag racing. Rookie Brandon Mattox of Terre Haute, IN, finished eleventh and earned the Wilwood Tuff Brakes Award.

Yeah, come on down. It's a fast half mile track. If there's going to be support classes why not late models and mods. These are some of the midwest's fastest late model guys. :23:

That is a great top 6. So great that it had seven cars in it.

Only in Ky. I guess.

I think the reason they have a hard time getting cars at Florance is because the toll roads at the Ky./Indiana line only accept teeth.

People in Ky. don't like bein' showed up by those fancy pants huusssioors with their full mouth's of eaten bones.

I kid Kentucky cause I care.

On a serious note.....There is a disturbing trend where teams aren't going to the bigger money shows. Basically between 18-30 cars for 3-10,000 to win races. Great drivers aren't even going where the money is.

This is a very tough trend because promotors are going to quit offering this money. They even had $100 tow for Florance.

If your not within a 100 mile radius of Indy, you will not get a good car count period. Cost too much to travel just to break or crash.

Gregg 8/30/09 12:11 AM

Re: MSCS @ Florence this Saturday!!!!!

Congrats to Hud Cone on the win and a fine run. :8: He pulled away from the start. Weir finished a strong second but wasn't able to real Cone in much. The drive of the night was Ricky Williams. He was patient and for most of the race was the only one that used what little bit of cushion there was on top. At times he was only a couple inches from the wall but from my vantage point he never once touched it. Robert Ballou went the other way, hugging the very bottom to find something. It worked a little too as he was able to move up a few positions.

On the way over I hit up the ATM in Aurora, Indiana. On the way out of the lot I debated on which way to turn onto US-50, right to North Vernon or left to Florence Speedway. I turned left to Florence and still am not sure I made the right decision. The track was a dry slickie all night and what might make for good late model racing (which it was) doesn't necessarily make for good sprint car racing. It looked like Lawrenceburg at Fun Fest the way the sprinters were tip toeing through the corners in the heats. I guess I'm just spoiled.

LEADERS EDGE 8/30/09 12:28 AM

Re: MSCS @ Florence this Saturday!!!!!

Putnamville is as close as it gets and it took a new promotor to get cars.

You don't get cars because guys think that where the money is, is where the big dogs are.

What does it matter if you race in Florance or Noth Vernon? If you break or crash it still costs the same. The tow costs are basically incidental at that point.

We broke a motor at Phoenix one year and Kokomo the next. Kokomo cost more and I didn't even get a good vacation out of it.

Too many options and not enough guys making rent form what they earn at the track. Although Shuman is about as professional as we have around; I think he usually uses the method of zigging when everyone else zags. He is a good enough racer that he knows when he pulls into a pit area where he is the top dog, he will usually take home the biggest bone.

Don't blame him. He is a great racer and he just uses his talents where he feels he can cash the big check on that night. I just wish that there were fewer options to where $3000 a night was the norm instead of the special. Can't happen when the best are split among 3-4 tracks on Saturdays.

hoosierhillbilly 8/30/09 12:39 AM

Re: MSCS @ Florence this Saturday!!!!!

Congrats to Hud Cone a long deserved win.

As I was watching this race, I felt like it was in slow motion due to the track conditions. It sort of reminded me of a silver crown race as tip-toed through the corners. I was really suprised that it went caution free.

The Late Model Race was excellent. It was definately a good one. THe modified feature was shaping up to be good but I left after the many late cautions.

All in all, I had an enjoyable night so the stop was worth it.

smith19 8/30/09 12:39 AM

Re: MSCS @ Florence this Saturday!!!!!

gregg you are right. the track sucked. it was a skating rink right off the bat. it usually get's black over there but hell it was black in hot laps. lm feature was pretty good.if i didn't like late models i would have thrown $18 in the trash.

I was talking to a younger driver who has spent the summer racing here and I asked him who he was surprised by the most. The most under rated driver back here. Whithout hesitation he said Hud Cone. He said he was one of the toughest drivers he has ever raced against.

Congrats to Hud.
