The amount of tracks running Saturday night races. Maybe it is the economy.... most of these tracks have traditionally ran Saturdays, but car counts are down down down. I hope things improve and car counts get back up. There really could stand to be 1 or 2 less tracks running Saturdays... and I will not say which ones could or should drop. The who has been Blake Fitzpatrick. He has solidified himself as a contender most nights he runs. MANY MANY good runs this year. A few mistakes along the way.... but you have to learn from them and so far it looks like they have. Great results for a great group! |

DD with a car hes comfortable with can be dominating witch is also a compliment to RWB. I wasn't really a Demon fan but hes making a new one :) |
Re: 2009 race season.
What has unpleasantly surprised me the most is how hard the economy has hit non-winged racing out here on the left coast, and the cancellation of the 2009 Hut 100.
Bryan Clauson has been a pleasant surprise, Kyle Robbins winning his first feature, and getting in the Hoosier 100 in this year. |
Re: 2009 race season.
I forgot to mention Coleman Gullick. He has been most impressive this year. Most improved driver??? I think you give it to the Iceman.
|
Re: 2009 race season.
I have to agree about Fitzpatrick. He really became a contender everywhere I saw him run. It is also good to see Chad Boat become a more consistent top finisher, it just didn't come to me as a surprise as much as Blake.

Re: 2009 race season.
I have to agree with both Blake and Chad having a break out year, but I also feel that we have forgotten Chris Windoms fast start before his injury.
Get well Chris.... |

"The Iceman" has to be the most improved driver on the non wing circuit this year. :22:

Re: 2009 race season.
The amount of races I missed because of weather or the threat or weather.
I can not remeber it ever being this bad. |

It was a pleasure meeting people at the race track and I look forward to possibly heading out to IN again to see some real racing! I also hope the the eastern swing next year has lots of sun and cars!! |

I agree with several about Blake Fitzpatrick, moving from the also ran category into contender. Also, after watching a young man dump it during hot laps at one of the first opening night races of the season at North Vernon into an exciting regular at Lawrenceburg I would say JJ Hughes, I would never had guessed that he would have improved that much from his first night out.

I agree that Blake Fitzpatrick has got to most improved driver, other than that it has to be all the rain outs at TSS.

Re: 2009 race season.
What I'm amazed with this year is how hard it is to pick out a top 5 best races of the year. There have been so many great races that its just too hard to pick. While the season has seemed short it has definately been a good one even with how the economy has affected the racing. Which just goes to show you don't need a huge car count for some good races. Most improved drivers I believe would be Fitz and Boat, give either one of another year or two and you should see big things coming out of them. And the last thing that suprised me is Whitt domination at Kokomo. How can you with the competitive field the track draws allow so much dominance?

Re: 2009 race season.
I'm surprised that the car counts and attendance have been what they are. I think both have been good given the current state of the economy. Down side is the number of rain outs. The last couple of years have been particularly bad. I'll jump on the Fitzpatrick bandwagon. When he first started you could tell he had the intestinal fortitude but he has now developed into a driver. Enjoy watching him run. All things considered, I believe unwinged sprint car racing has had a good year. And, some really good events remaining.

Re: 2009 race season.
Devon,
A couple of thought provoking questions. Here are my top three in both categories. What has surprised me the most? 1)I would say the number of top notch drivers without full time rides. I know the economy has a lot to do with it, but I would think that would hurt inexperienced drivers more than the top guns. 2)The John Memmer situation at Danville. If I wouldn't have seen it with my own eyes, I probably would have been very skeptical. 3)The number of rain outs/cancellations/enhancements that have transpired. Who has surprised me the most? 1)Coleman Gulick stands out the most. A truly gifted driver who has shown so much maturity for his very young age. He has been easy on equipment and respectful of the other drivers around him. He is so much fun to watch. 2)Blake Fitzpatrick is a real gasser. He started off sprint week opening some folks eyes and you knew it wouldn't be long before he found victory lane. Another fun youngster to keep an eye on. 3)Bryan Clauson. The last night of sprint week he and Levi were in a struggle for the points championship. With a slim one point lead heading into the feature he and Levi were starting side by side. Whoever could finish ahead of the other was surely the champion. Bryan received a terrible break when three cars in front of Levi on the inside row got tangled up on the initial start. Relagated to the back of the field, that gave Levi the opportunity to move up three rows. Instead of just riding it out, young Mr. Clauson got up on the wheel :31: and showed his mettle. He eventually ran out of laps but still came close to making it a bang/bang finish. IMO, it was the drive of the year so far. |
