New USAC President FLEXES SOME MUSCLE
How about this, within the first 30 minutes of his reign at USAC, Kevin Miller relieves the almighty Owen Snyder of his duties! Maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel, could there actually be a USAC president with some sack! I welcome the change! BUH BYE OWEN : )

Owen showed up this morning and was out the door in just over an hour. Kevin Miller is making some big changes. Friday was Rollie last day.
Added rumors are Jason Smith coming back along with the Careys in 2008 |
Re: New USAC President FLEXES SOME MUSCLE
Can I put a vote in for Eric Pethtel to wear the USAC colors again? great guy with common sense, not too common in that office.

Re: New USAC President FLEXES SOME MUSCLE
Let's hope and pray the PRA cars are merged back into Silver Crown series and the New Super Go Karts are put as their own series.
Let's also hope we see a truly national schedule that has 40 or so events in the prime of the year. Let's hope there are at least 10 dirt races on the Silver Crown series (one at Indiana SF, two at Springfield, two at Duquoin, one at Sacramento, one at Eldora, one at THAT, one at Knoxville, and one at Manzanita. I know these are lofty wishes but a guy has to have hope. |

I believe Sacramento and Knoxville gave up their SC shows because they lost money. I went to the last 2 Knoxville shows. The racing was great, but the crowds were small. SC shows are costwise comparable to a WoO show. I guess what I am saying is better hope for someone with deep pockets to step up and promote those shows. A great idea, but I don't see it happening. |
Re: New USAC President FLEXES SOME MUSCLE
They need to combine the Silver Crown cars for 2008 and run the 1 1/2 cars on those track that want a date and bring the Real SIlver Crown cars to IRP. Illiana, Toldeo, Gateway plus the dirt mile schedule with THAT in July around fireworks.
Problem is the new owners can't get screwed by the others. Maybe run them along as a 2nd class like Grand Am does? Somehow the need to be a part and I think it will happen. D.O. :dologob: |
Re: New USAC President FLEXES SOME MUSCLE
I just went to the USAC website, where I see nothing about a new president or any other staff changes.
Who is Kevin Miller? What's he done previously? Is Owen Snyder the one who is Jim McQueen's stepson? He used to be a good guy. I take it he has not worked out well in the office? Dick. |
Re: New USAC President FLEXES SOME MUSCLE
please correct me if i'm wrong but I think Kevin Miller is from Mopar/ Dodge racing. Maybe director of competition??? There are a couple Kevin Millers so it's possible I might not be close, anyone back me up on this one?

Re: New USAC President FLEXES SOME MUSCLE
Kevin Miller was a high muckety muck at Mopar and rumored long to be the leading candidate to replace Rollie.
There are a lot of things about Owen that went wrong, some personal and some professional. He was not good with people. He did not run events very well at all as evidenced by a number of debacles. All you have to do is to look at the three USAC divisions to see how the leadership has done. USAC is on the verge of losing a hold on midget racing, if it has not done so already. The national Sprint cars can't draw outside of IN, OH and perhaps CA. And I think we all know the problems in the Silver Crown series. Rollie's last day was 11/30. Everyone knew Owen was a done deal as well. They need to keep Staab around, bring back Bill Carey as well. They need to get Dick Jordan some real help to promote the organization through better and more timely media communication. Miller also needs to watch the amount of cronyism and nepotism that's gone on all these years as well. |

Regarding the Sacra-tomato race, I think the promoter died and that was the end of SC racing at that track. Also the Agajanians promoted the highly successful race at DelMar but I think the racers were unhappy with the track conditions, a lot of sand I hear and very little passing. In order for the SC series to work on the West Coast, you would need at least two races to make the trip worth while. The Phoenix race could be a prelude to a tour in California.

i really like his idea about how sprint cars need to be marketed, they are a crude sport...these cars run on the edge...if more people really knew how close these cars ran to flipping and how exciting this racing is, they would come out... more races broad casted on the internet is a great idea USAC needs this revival great :dologob: tonight |

The 1996 DelMar race was one of the most memorable in S.C. History - I was there and it was quite a weekend. There was concours de elegance that featured an incredible array of restored cars - R Ward and Troy Ruttman were the grand marshalls, there was an art and photo auction - T.Q's in a rodeo ground like area (wasn't good - but different. Scott Delosio announced and was a riot - as was Bruce Flanders for the big show)) and then the race itself featured the blown tire on the white flag by Kenny Irwin when he had the title in his hand - crashed into young Ryan Newman, and Jimmy Sills, to the shock of all, won his third title. (Jay Drake won the midget race which made him a winner on the mile in two straight races - he also won at Sacramento) The venue was stunning - but the race was awful. Robbie Flock finished on the podium and the whole front of his car was like it had been sand blasted - and then to start they used this concrete area for a launching pad and I think it cost a ton of money to clean. It was incredible, however, running the S.C. cars at the place that had not seen big open wheel cars since Rex Mays took his last lap.

Re: New USAC President FLEXES SOME MUSCLE
I paid a visit to the DelMar Fairgrounds in the winter of 1997. What an incredible place. The huge grandstand is absolutely gorgeous, almost like a palace and the surrounding grounds are stunning. The temporary concrete walls were still in place around the track. I walked into the grandstand, sat down and just spent a few minutes taking in the sites. No one was there except the maintenance men but I tried to invision the SC cars racing around on the beautiful mile track. A fantastic facility just off the Pacific Ocean just north of San Diego. I think the late Bing Crosby had something to do with the grounds when it was originally built. Too bad SC racing hasn't continued there.
I visited another historic race track site, the Arizona State Farigrounds in the winter of 1991. I had seen pics of the track and grandstand in some race mags and wanted to see what actually was still there. There it was!! The grandstand! Still there but it didn't look nearly as big as the pics showed it. Maybe it would hold 5,000 people. The mile track is gone but there is still part of it in front of the grandstand where they hold rodeos , demo derbies and motocross. It looked to me like the original guardrail was still in place in front of the grandstand where Elmer George crashed into a bunch of spectators. The former infield is now a parking lot and sitting where the backstctch used to be is an outdated coliseum. Unlike the DelMar grounds, this place needs some updating badly. The third historic site that I visited was the Michigan State Farigrounds sitting in the middle of a Detroit ghetto. wow... you need an armed bodyguard in that neighborhood. The lady at the entrance wouldn't let me in so I drove around to the back off of 8 Mile Road and found an open gate. I drove in and there was a hint of the mile track. The old condemned grandstand was still there (since demolished), not very big, maybe would hold 3,000 people. A big portion of the infield has been taken over by a commercial Baseball field business... but... apparently when the track was shut down they left the original banking in place because you could see exactly where the track used to be. In fact, if you removed the grass and weeds you could probably race there again. At one point a few years ago, there was a movement to build a paved mile track there but a high dollar neighborhood a mile or so away said the noise would be too much and the mayor and city officals put the clamps on the project. Tonight's show will be replayed on www.racefanradio.com after or around midnight or stored in the show lib.
It's Kevin Miller's first day on the job and Owen's postion is done away with. Jason Smith will return as Senior V/P Race Operations. [ #2 ]. Greg Staab gets to work with schedules and run sprint division. Carey's comeback. Kevin sez that USAC is going for the race fans and bringing in a new younger group of fans. In other words Promotion of events making a National Series. Kevin also talked about podcast such as www.mo-pod.com of USAC event highlights. Where are the fans today? on the computer, looking at stuff. More to come at PRI from USAC. Thank You USAC and Kevin Miller for joining us tonight. :dologob: |
Re: New USAC President FLEXES SOME MUSCLE
Perhaps I should clarify an earlier statement, USAC can't draw sprint cars (not fans) and fill fields outside of those states. Many winged guys won't take off the crutch, but when they do some can do pretty well.
These seem like steps in the right direction. I really like Staab, he's a sharp guy. |

I think I might remember something about winged racing but I don't know if the most of the USAC guys could be competitive in the motor department. Re: New USAC President FLEXES SOME MUSCLE
I really don't get how "More races broadcasted on the INTERNET" Helps promote the sport. It helps me, A existing race fan but reaches very few potential new fans.
TV's the way to go. Not knocking these shows. I just don't see it doing nothing but hurting local gates. Lets see, You go to a USAC show and you see a 30lap race for 5000 to win, not very much at the back in pay and no local drivers or very few? What do we do to change this? USAC's been stuck on it's 20 dollar gate for what? 20 years? 25 dollar regular USAC shows 6000 to win 300 to start, Every ten cars is a heat and no LCQ 30-35 dollar shows, 40-50 lap features. 8000 to win 400 to start. Lets do it! Make it special! Market it and Go! Chuck |
