Dick Good of Mishawaka, Indiana wins! - 4 July 1959
For those who had the pleasure of watching one of Indiana's all time great race drivers - Dick Good of Mishawaka, Indiana. On the 4th of July 1959, Dick Good won a supermodified race at Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, Michigan. He was fast qualifier at 15.79 out of a field of 37 supermod's. He won Heat 1, the Pursuit, and the Feature. :31:
Indiana's Dick Good won 13 features at Jackson Motor Speedway, Michigan in 1959 - including 11 in a row. NOTE: A $200 bounty was put on Dick Good to anyone who could beat him if he started the feature. The bounty was collected by an upcoming 'hot shoe' who would go on to win the Indy 500 2x's - Gordon Johncock. :31: Dick Good and Gordon Johncock are two of America's greatest all time racing veterans, champions and legends - JMO. :6: A special thank you to Marty Blume for researching and compiling the above racing information. Have a Happy 4th of July....see you at the races :32: Rich - Arnold, Missouri |
Re: Dick Good of Mishawaka, Indiana wins! - 4 July 1959
Thanks Rich for the chance to relieve racing history. Did Dick Good ever make the long haul to the Big O? I don't remember him ever racing there. Gordie of course became one of my all time favorite hereo's. I guess going all the way back to the 60's I have always wanted to cheer for racers I know in person or have had the chnace to see race in person. Gordie was one of those racers I got to see wheel a supermodified around the Big O before he made his move to Indy cars. I forget what year it was when we were at Trenton when he won the Indy car race. Wish he would return to the Big O for the Old Timers Reunion.
See you there next week, Patti |
Re: Dick Good of Mishawaka, Indiana wins! - 4 July 1959
Welcome Patti,
Yes, Dick Good made the long trek from Indiana to Oswego Speedway, New York in 1962 and 1963. He finished 2nd in the 1962 Oswego Classic and finished 35th in the 1963 Oswego Classic. The last time I saw Gordon Johncock was about 5 years ago at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri. I attend the Jackson Speedway Reunion in Michiagn every year and Gordy doesn't attend. But, from what I have been told he used to attend the Jackson Reunion a while back. I agree, it would be good to see Gordy again. Asphalt specialist Gordy Johncock by the way won two big dirt races - the first ever Williams Grove Nationals in 1963 and he also won a 100 lapper at Eldora - in a supermodified on the dirt. Have a good day...see you at the races Rich - Arnold, Missouri |
Re: Dick Good of Mishawaka, Indiana wins! - 4
I'll never forget watching Dick Good at Powell Motor Speedway in Powell Ohio in the mid to late 50's. Drove the number 10 car sponsored by Don Sprung Chevrolet with a big caddy engine for power. He "cleaned a whole bunch of clocks" in that period. One of my all time favorites, along with Chuck Engle, Jim Cushman, Bill Pedigo, Jack Bowsher, Bill Clemon's and a whole slew of others. That was the "start" of stock car racing in this country. Oh my, those were the good ole days!!!!!!!!! By the way, Dick was driving what was to be one of the first "rail-jobs" and everyone else was in the standard old Coupe's.

Gordy is a very private person, just like my dad was, Dick Good. They really appreciated all of their fans, but once they were done racing they pretty much didn't look back. Ken Good

i never ment Dick Good but herd a lot about DICK from GE WOOD was it WOODY'S CAR Dick was driving on this day in jackson

Re: Dick Good of Mishawaka, Indiana wins! - 4
It was Woody's #11. Dad intermittently ran for other owners, but 99% was with Woody. NO ONE could build or set up a Super Modified like Woody.

Re: Dick Good of Mishawaka, Indiana wins! - 4
Were not some of your father's cars powered by Studebakers from nearby South Bend Indiana?
|
Re: Dick Good of Mishawaka, Indiana wins! - 4
Dad drove more than just Super Modified's. A Hudson Hornet, Midgets, Indy Roadster, '63 Ford in the Daytona 500, etc. As far as the Gold #11 Super Modified, it was a small block Chevy. That car won over 53 features and set 21 new track records. I'm not aware of Woody using Studebaker engines, even though Studebaker also used some Chevy engines.

Dick Good drove the gold #11 @ Toledo in the early 60's with spectacular success. I am sure glad I was able to see him run in person.

Saw him win a 100 lapper at the old 1/4 mi. paved Portsmouth (Ohio) Speedway, 1962 I think, maybe '63, Beat the best modifieds in the midwest.

Re: Dick Good of Mishawaka, Indiana wins! - 4
A sports writer gave him the tag of "Rapid". That was the only car that had the tag on it. Dad never liked it on the car. I think he felt embarrased by it. One of the many lessons he taught me was not to talk about what you can do, but to show it.

Woody did run a Studebaker engine for awhile in the #11 Super, that dad drove and then went to a Corvette engine.
