Indiana Midget Week

I heard a couple months ago about adding a race to IMW. Do we have dates? Just curious for vacation time.

I believe Bloomington was added for next year. Not sure of the last time they ran mibgets there but I'm sure it will be anticipated like Haubstadt was this year.

...Or it could be time to add the Hut Hundred back into the mix.

August 6 - 10. Gas City, Kamp, Bloomington, Lawrenceburg, Kokomo in order. Greg Staab worked hard to get both the IMW and ISW schedules done early.:applaud::thumb:

How cool would it be to have The Hut 100 as the final night of MW.

It was in the past wasn't it?

Midgets at Bloomington will be great. The track being narrow early in the night won't be as big a challenge as it is for the sprint cars.

On the top of the IOW message board page, click on "The Rumble Series" advertisement and on the Rumble Series home page, top right corner it says,,

Has Tony Barhorst leased a different track for his 2008 IMW date?

Guess I wont be going to all of midget week after all. There were a few of us here that remember their last open wheel disaster and i for one wont go back on my promise never to set foot in that track again. It's the only track I've ever said that about.

The Hut 100 was the last show of IMW in 2005 and it was a problem. Teams stayed home from the other shows to save the car for that. Not a good plan. As for the possibility of Union County I sure hope a better track is prepared than for their last sprint car show on Sep. 18, 2004 won by Matt Westfall. They ran a 100 lap LM race the night before and the only track prep was 3 laps by the water truck. The cars were squealing tires in hot laps! The only good thing to come out of that night was that I met many IOWers such as Fishburger, DannyB, Racefan20, itsanonwingthing, grogg, etc.:thumb:

You foegot your racing freind Richie Dwight he will be disapointed:rolling:
Being at Liberty...I too was not real happy with that race. I know that Mt. Lawn would never be part of midget week but I miss watching the national midgets at that place. A question for you... how many national
midget racing events have been held there and ther winners.

Re: Indiana Midget Week

I understand your comments from the past but Union County Speedway has made GREAT improvements just the last two years. You have to remember, people and places change since 2004.

I am going to comment on these posts, and do not want you to take offense to it. I want to tell you I will work night and day to prove you wrong.

First ...this will be a USAC National Midget show with non winged sprints...Larry Boos probably directing sprints. We will have the track prepped for open wheel racing. LET THERE BE NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT.

The owner of Union County has put in concrete grandstands, new pressbox with concession stands... BIG new lights, will have a new inside concrete wall....I visited with Greg Staab at the track to check it out, and the improvements are impressive. I am going to visit to take photos of the updated track and post them on our website.

Please don't hurt this date by bringing up past problems. I am trying to move Midget Week forward. More will be explained after the official announcement on Midget Week.

Thanks,

I seen some of the best racing I've ever seen at that track. Not sure what a inside wall will help (Except safety of the staff) but the track can be exciting.

Chuck, just another reason to do the whole midget week thing for me!

I like the idea of adding Union County to the mix, aside from it being somewhat close to home. It can be a good track, if prepared well. We shall see if they can do that...

One of the best races I've seen there was won by Robbie Stanley, in an orange #44. Oh yeah, it was a winged race, I think All-Stars. He rode the fence all the way around that place...

Shawn, I mentioned that in another thread about *MAKING YOUR OWN GROVE* I remember the winged shows back in the late 80s along with a CRA race or two but Robbie and Mike bowling would go up top and jump the cushion and make their own grove while many would just run the bottom under it.

WIth some tack it can be sweet, All the improvements last time I was there two or three years ago were certainly starting to take shape.

Chuck, who realizes Fish and a few others seen a not so pleasant show but it could be good if run and prepped right.

If I can return to Brownstown, and I will, even after the debacle that was the CRA tour race there won by Joe Roush several years ago, I can and will return to Union County despite the above mentioned past issues. Besides, I witnessed a terrific midget race there (late 60's? early 70's?) won by the flying stone dodging Merle Bettenahusen.

Can't wait for "O" "8".

I'm going to do my best to get there this year. Andrew Quinn tried to get me out there this year, but I didn't do it. After listening to him describe what I missed, I won't make that mistake again.

Re: Indiana Midget Week

It was so long ago when I was there, it was still called Whitewater Valley Speedway. All I can remember about it is USAC midgets rained out saturday nite. Resched for sunday. Overwatered the track and they didn't start hot laps until 9PM sunday (had to work monday). My memory is very foggy about the race, except I recall Jeff Swindell driving the #46 Gamester midget.

It was a 3/8 with long straights and with tight high banked turns. Is it still like that?

Maybe Bob Jenkins will be there. I think Liberty is his hometown IIRC.

Seadog, your description of the track is accurate.

In the early eighties, I believe that Duke Cook was the promoter at Whitewater.

Good observation about Bob Jenkins...I did read that he is originally from Liberty.

I'm glad to see that Tony B got on here right away to start letting fans in on his plans. That was the main reason for me mentioning this coming change as soon as I found out about it. I knew some would not be real happy. We all have to remember, Tony is a very good promoter and I really think this will be one of the best open wheel shows ever, or in quite some time, held at Union County Speedway. He definately is not afraid to do what it takes to put on a good show and promote it and he and Larry Boos do work good together. We wish you the best Tony and I hope you get a lot of support on this. :thumb:

I was there in 90 or 91 for the CRA show that Frankie Kerr stuffed McSpadden coming out of turn 4 to win. I can still remember how loud the fans booed Kerr in victory lane. It was good racing that night, at least till Frankie pulled that bonehead move.

Count me in for this race, as I love sprint/midget double headers. Sure as hell beats the junker stockcar class we always have to put up with during sprintweek.

I like the idea of leasing a track like Union County to run a show like this. I'd like to see something like that done at Montpelier. Maybe squeeze that in between Gas City and Union County. The owner has leased it for a demolition derby twice in the last three years, so I would imagine it wouldn't be too expensive to lease. Just a thought.
