Scary Moment @ Gas City

John Wolfe

We were there that day. It happened right in front of us. And it was indeed scary to watch it unfold and not knowing at the time what happened to John.

I was also there that day. I was videotaping from the top row of the grandstands and caught the crash as well. I remember some guys sitting in front of us wanting to see the tape. I told them not until we make sure hes ok. Very scary crash indeed.

That happened near the end of the 2003 season, the year before I moved out here. I had heard how scary a crash it was but, until now, had not seen it. Thank God for well built race cars!

I was sitting about half way up right in line with the crash. Not only was it scary but so was the rescue. Jerking the cars around before knowing what the injuries were wasnt the smartest thing I've ever seen.

I struggled to watch this, Wondering if it's for personal gain? Glorifying a career ending accident? or what not.

See I've seen this before in person with Doty and another one at I can't remember which either CRA or 4 crown and then going home to hear about vogler on the way from that Kings Royal.

I know Johns around today and I think owns a car someone else drives. (Thank God) One of the reasons I watched till the end.

The end made it more understandable. Watch till the end or don't watch it at all.

God Bless John Wolfe and all invovled
Chuck

Chuck, that wreck occured in Sept of '03. Wolfe went on to race 3 more years and as far as I know his last race was last years Chili Bowl. I have seen him working on Steve Ott's 0tt car in the pits this year.

Re: Scary Moment @ Gas City

Does anyone know if his car was equiped with the vertical "arm bars". I hate to say it, but I have never been a fan of them, because so many guys have them installed, then put those giant fiberglass panels on them further obstructing my view of the driver,...but after watching this video, I feel a little guilty about that. I couldn't tell if Wolfe's car had them or not, it was smashed so badly. I willingly give up the view of the driver to help insure that he be there another week for me to enjoy.

OK, thanks for that clarification. Wasn't sure if that was the crash or not. Still very scary.

The wreck I mentioned of either a four crown or CRA show at eldora a car was T boned while upsidedown flipping down the front stretch, to the best of my knowlege that drivers never raced again.

How right you are my friend . A good freind of mine bought his trailer and had a big crash at Danville, Illinois he has driving a mod-lite and the wreck happen in the same spot on the track as Wolf's and enother car hit him while on his side. We spent a long time at the hospital that night but he is all right though. Did John get his arm hurt bad in that crash? I told my freind this story and he said that he was going to rid of the trailer I don't think he did though:emote20:

I really do not understand the reason for this thread?
Is it to watch as entertainment?
Is the purpose to show how dangerous the sport is?
Is someone looking for negative remarks about the safety team?

I know John Wolfe is a frequent user of this site, and I find it hard to believe that this thread makes him smile?

Some things are better left as they are. The real pro's like DO and Mills would never show this video !

Thats not true it is on video and I have the tape.
May be it is part of the sport.... just because you do not like it does not make it untrue If John Wolfe does not like my post let him e-mail and I will delete it....

Have you ever watched D.O.'s THRILLS AND SPILLS ???????????

This is not Thrills material, DO has miles of video that includes injury !
I have never heard a lady screaming in a DO video. I am trying to remeber a video that included serious injury in any of his tapes.

I watched John Wolfe drive sprint cars for alot of years ...he drove that car as fast as it would go... Mr. Wolfe is a all time favorite. Please do not say I am offending him..... Now you got me started.... And I do not think he would be to pissed off about my post.

John did return to racing after that crash and won the track championship at Gas City again in 2005.

Chuck, I think the incident you are referring to involved Californian Dennis Rodriguez who was indeed seriously injured and spent a lot of time in a Dayton, OH hospital. It was a CRA eastern tour show. As you suggest, I don't believe Rodriguez ever returned to driving race cars. I heard that his Mom had been writing the checks and quite understandably lost interest in continuing.

See post above.

Yes

Not the intentions of this thread.

I can't speak to how it makes John feel. But I do know that after this wreck and watching and hearing about what he went through and see him back on the track racing and taking the checkered flag, winning the Gas City 2005 championship sure did put a smile on my face.

Chris Beaver?

Actually, Greg Stephens wreck at the old Kokomo is probably one of the worst on any of DO's tapes resulting in injury. That or the Tray House non-stop gyro on the front stretch at the Put.

There is also a couple of midget flips at Terre Haute, one being Jack Runyan I think, that are pretty hard hits resulting in knocked out drivers and a couple broken arms.

Re: Scary Moment @ Gas City

My husband now races at Ventura in a 360 with the VRA out here in California. Dennis suffered very serious injuries in the accident at Eldora on May 3rd 1992 during the CRA midwest tour. Soon after the crash Dennis lost his mom to cancer, and did not race until 2004. He occasionally runs a few USAC shows at ventura, and loves sprint car racing more than anything in the world, and just could not stay away from the sport. Dennis might run sprintweek next year just because of how much he misses racing out in the midwest with all the great fans out there. Take Care, and I hope everyone enjoys their holiday.

Thank you so much Rachelle for posting this. I had the feeling Marv was right on the name mention but was unsure.

I remember being excited to see him race out here in the midwest. I also vividly remember his crash being T boned while flipping down the front stretch at Eldora.

Im so glad to hear about his recovery and return to racing. Im also saddened to hear of the loss of his Mom.

I would love to see him race again and hope this plan of comming back works out.
Chuck
